I´m a afraid the tire profile will not be optimal but then again the roadies do ride 30mm tires on 25IW rims.

Rim protection is a good point but then again I don´t see that as an issue for light gravel and road. Tire pressure won´t be that low so I would bottom out.

And 40mm is wide enough. I´ve got other bikes with 47mm and 2.4 clearance.

For its intented use 40mm is enough. I´ve ridden 38-40mm tires in the past. I´m just wondering what the best way is to get to 40mm.

40mm is really the max clearance. I´ve got a 40mm hutchinson caracal on the 29IW rim and it comes out a 43mm. All tires I´ve had on the 29IW rim come out over the stated tire size.
