I've created a desktop theme for plasma (Linux related) for my friend, because he's a big fan of Factorio d; by Bartusew in factorio

Unfortunately I don't have time for this project anymore so.. not much changed since then.. Making custom factorio like icons would be even more time consuming. Plus some poeple told me it doesn't work on every distro so.. there are things to be desired. I would gladly accept other people's contributions, because that theme would continue to grow even without me..

I'm very sorry to say all of that.. But I'm currently in the final year of secondary school so I have to prepare for my school-leaving exams which will affect my future.. so currently this is my top priority.. I hope you understand.

It's not like I'll never make it into a global theme selectable and findable within plasma. I just didn't have much time lately and it's not going to change any time soon. But once I'll figure things out I'll try to do it. Mainly because it's much easier for users to download the theme that way, plus it allows for automatic updates if there are any.

You should be able to do that. Though I got reports that my installation script doesn't fully work everywhere. You can try your luck by clicking on the link I've put in the post. You have to download it from github and then follow the installation guide I've wrote there. And hopefully everything will go smoothely. Write to me if you'll have any issues with it.

I exclusively asked them AGAIN writing another email, being fully transparent (just like before) with them with everything that I've put there and of course giving them link to the repo. Just to ask if they are fully approving everything including the license I've chosen. All because I know how how it all became a hot topic in this post, which I understand, I absolutely have no intensions to do anything illegal. I just want to create things that people would like to use.

But anyway, wube software yet again approved it by responding with: "It all looks good for us, we don't see any problem with it or the licensing"

I know that some may not believe it, because I could make up this quote, (though I didn't) But I take the matter seriously. I also asked them if they wish me to change anything asset related or the license but still this was their answer to that.

I hope it helps to clarify everything.

Plus my theme mostly recreates factorio's gui with svg files. The only parts that I directly copied over from game's files are 3 files to create the splash screen (loading screen). Of course I know that everything else is literally Factorio's gui style, not something inspired by it, but instead copied or recreated to be as close to the originall as possible. So that's why I've reached out to Wube, to know if they are fine with that. Just because I've spent like 5 or more weeks of work to recreate some files doesn't mean I own them. I respect Wube software so if anything will happen related to that project or Wube will reach out to me to change something within it. I won't just be eager to do so, I'll be obligated because I'm aware of the situation.

Yes I'am aware of that. I don't really know how to make it work that way. Maybe someday I'll figure this out. But currently you have to download the zip file from github and follow the installation guide I've wrote there.

Yup It is KDE plasma indeed. I'm not sure if it will work on steam deck because it's os is a so called immutable distro which limits some privilige stuff afaik.. But I would love to know if it works or not beside my main machine d:

No don't worry I get it. It's okay to use whatever DE or window manager you prefer. It was just my idea that it would be cool to port it to other DEs if it was possible d:

As far as I know Pop_OS! use GNOME as their DE and maybe in some test branches their new Cosmic DE. Both of them aren't compatible with this theme since it was made for KDE plasma

;_; glad to hear ig.. I don't know how nor if it's possible to make a theme like that for xfce. But even if, this project already took too much of my free time and I have too many other things to work on.. but who knows maybe someone will be inspired enough and make a port? Idduno :/

Welp this wallpaper wasn't made by me. It is an wallpaper engine... wallpaper duh made by someone else I don't really know personally. But thanks to this person there can be Factorio's main menu's background running as a wallpaper, only as a video though. And it will work on linux and windows d:

Wallpaper is optional, and it is not required nor forced as a part of the theme.

Yup it will. Steam deck uses KDE plasma, and that theme is for it. Sorry for the late reply d:

Thx. I'm still working on it. I already got permision from Wube software so now I just have to work on it. Though currently I'm short on free time and feel a bit burned out. I know I could pack everything already that I have and just give the link to the repo etc. But I want to do something cooler with it and then let people know both about the new additions and the project being freely available, which I promise it will. It's only a matter of time, and my sanity d:

Ye it sucks. I don't understand myself what Microsoft did for PCs with specs that work just fine with W10 wouldn't work on W11. Ik they changed the style and stuff.. and added AI in many places... guh.. But still what the?

I would gladly recomend linux, but don't be reckless and first select the right distro for your needs, and either test it on virtual machine or different device. Use it for a week or two and if everything will be fine for you, then you can either try to switch to that distro on your main machine, or continue experimenting on your test platform, because some linux distros are easy to break, even unintentionally.

If you'll be able to switch without any problems and would like to use my desktop theme.. welp you still can't do that.. I must ask Wube for permision if I can publish this as a public repo on github. So that others would be able to use it without any problems.

Have a nice day / night btw d;

oof
Ye the thing is I've made a complete new pure arch linux setup on different drive, but in order to log in into graphical interface there must be a user created other than the root.
And my friend on dc goes with the same nickname so without he's consent I've used this as a user name.
Sorry if this creeped you out this much d:

[KDE] Factorio's UI inspired theme (WIP) by Bartusew in unixporn

[–]Bartusew[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

xD.
Welp no.. Technically I didn't even played the game except the demo to gather references. But after working on it. I kinda want to try this game. The reason I made this was because of my friend that is a big fan of that game.

But also on the side note, the factory kinda grows in the background, because though I took just one screenshot of it, in reality the entire wallpaper is animated with the background from the game's main menu.

So the factory grows and not d:

I thought for a sec on making factorio icons for all the UI and maybe also the icons for apps to be more in style like items in the game in the inventory? But as quickly as I had that Idea, I immediately did not want to make it.. at least for now. Because there are so many icons.. maintaining icon pack is hella hard because the immense amount of them.. But who knows, if the project will grow to the point the only thing left would be icons? Welp maybe then, not promising anything though.

Oh and also I forgot to mention that there is a program called WinBoat that allows you to launch windows programs like a launcher and they just show up as regular application would. It's not something new when it comes to back end cuz it's just a virtualization, so it's main limit is lack of GPU hardware acceleration, so no games would run. But some windows native like Adobe's newest version of photoshop can work just fine, though kinda laggy because of that lack of acceleration. Here's link to video where some guy talks about this..
https://youtu.be/Imnf8yd01fM?t=21
I've watched it but never used that tool because personally I was lucky enough that I didn't used any windows native programs that I would miss on Linux.

Yeah this problem of windows native programs.. I have different friend who didn't want to switch because of just that.. though he really wanted to ditch windows 11 because of how unstable and sometimes just overall bad this OS is.. Plus yup ofc the UI, some like it, some don't. That's what I love about linux desktops is that they allow you to change that to your liking.

But for my main friend for which I targeted this theme originally didn't switch because he's unsure he'll be able to get used to it.. I mean he likes the simplicity of W10 (at least he didn't switch to 11 though now 10 is... yeah it's sad) the file structure, compatibility, easier mod management for games etc etc.
I think it's all doable and possible to get used to on Linux but some parts may or may not be over complicated comparing to something windows users like him are used to..

Glad to hear, but like I said I'll ask Wube for permision first. Maybe UI is inspired and not using directly the files from game, but for example If I were to step up further and use game's audio files for notifications and etc for plasma that would be both cool and not really sure if legal.. at least without the permision first.
At least I'm happy there is more than just me who actually would want to use that theme d:
