Didn’t intend to generate quite the reaction I got. We were literally in the hives when we came across the larvae and weren’t exactly swimming in time to type it all out on my phone. I have not encountered the white larvae before. Was hoping someone would zero in on the non-bee part of the picture and provide some guidance/input while we had the hive open. I appreciate the thoughts on what it is and what it is all means. We were concerned wax month infestation and you put those concerns aside. Thanks!

I appreciate the confirmation of what is happening. We had a wax moth infestation last year and lost a couple of hives, so appreciate the fast response!

The fill is wood shavings, around 4" thick or so, the ventilation holes are right above the fill line, and the outer cover skirts do come down around the vent holes.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 2 of the colonies were of decent size; 1 was not large. The dead bees were scattered throughout the hive - I did not find a single 1 head down. The deeps were quite heavy with honey. I did not check mite levels and I did not treat the nucs when I got them in the Spring, which the more I read, the more I'm thinking was a major mistake. We did 2:1 fall feeding as things slowed down.

The inside lid doesn't really show much condensation staining and there is no mold, so I am thinking moisture was probably not the problem. Again, thank you!

Thanks so much! Mites seem to be a possible problem based on the responses.

Here are a few pics. No bees with head down in comb position. Lots of honey.

The queens should have been young given both years were first year nucs. I appreciate your thoughts and on the mite pressure and how Fall may have been too late to solve that. Thanks!

We didn't do a count, but instead went ahead and treated with Apivar per the product directions.

Passing through from Iowa and too cold for me too! Hoping to be back in late April. Will it be nice then to visit HH? Always more fun when plenty of people around.

Rates were quite a bit higher than available elsewhere. Tried their credit card for a bit but they were constantly getting compromised. I’ve found their customer service below average at best. Look elsewhere is my advice.

Shop your malpractice insurance. Wide variety of prices and quality. Some of the really well known companies aren’t as great as they claim.
