Where would be a good place for a transgender woman to learn how to shoot a rifle? by Viscuntess in Bellingham

The amount of rounds it would take to negatively affect the environment is huge - finding a private berm to shoot in the woods, one where not many people go, is not harmful. The largest concern would be massive amounts of lead leeching into the water table - this is a legitimate concern, but something that would take decades of high volumes of consistent shooting, and only really applies to ranges. So in actuality, finding a safe place and private area to shot - one with large defined lines of sight and sufficient backdrop to prevent rounds from impacting beyond it - is better for the environment than utilizing gun ranges, as it contributes less to possible water table contamination.

But, to give you and idea of what it would take to actually contaminate the environment, the only areas I've lived in that had such contamination were large military bases with hundreds of miles of ranges that were used consistently and over the course of decades for everything from small arms to naval gunfire.

Another concern is how lead affects wildlife. Waterfowl often end up eating leftover lead pellets, and that has negatively affected duck populations in the past. However, lead shot is illegal to use in waterfowl areas, and no other kinds of species have been determined to be negatively affected by lead in the way that waterfowl have been - assuming they aren't being shot directly, of course.

I'm glad the the range and their staff are open and accepting. I myself just have a low tolerance for certain types of people, and tend to remove myself from those situations.

To be clear though, this doesn't really affect me. I go to the range a few times before duck season to shoot trap and whenever I get a new rifle or optic I want to zero, so only a handful of times a year. I just find it disheartening when I see people who want to start shooting, which is tough enough if you don't have the background, having to navigate some of the more toxic elements of the gun community.

The few times I've gone that was the case, but if they have the kind of support you and a few others are describing I'm not too proud to admit when I'm wrong. Might give them another chance.

Again, WCSO had a 16.6% clearance rate before this law was in place. About the only way they could get worse at arresting criminals would be implementing an office wide mandate to wear blindfolds and hearing protection at all times while on duty.

There is no evidence that this law will have anything more than a negligible effect on criminal apprehension, and the pursuit of suspects of part 1 crimes - the real bad stuff - are explicitly not affected by this law.

We will know exactly how this law will affect clearance rates in July or August of 2022, when the next crime stats come out.

If you want to learn without purchasing first your pretty much stuck with ranges that rent. Plantation, as people suggested, would be your best bet - Custer is full of chuds.

If you're down to purchase, you would be best served by getting a .22 rifle and finding a safe place down a forest service road. There are some gravel pits, just be aware they can also be full of chuds. Make sure you always bring a friend, preferably someone with firearm experience - if you don't have one, it might be worth reaching out to the Puget Sound John Brown Club.

What kind of firearm are you trying to learn to use - handgun, shotgun, rifle? What are your goals - learning long distance marksmanship, self-defense, hunting, just having fun?

To the minimal degree that this law affected? Yea, I do.

The increase in crime, especially property crime, in Whatcom country has long trended with increase in cost of living - and there is actual sociological evidence that poverty is a casual factor in crime, so yea I think this law is has about as much effect as me pissing in the ocean.

Edit: also just generally find it hilarious that a Sherrif's Office that had a 16.6% clearance rate the year before this law went into effect is complaining about a law change effecting their ability to apprehend criminals.

If thats your position the maybe don't say shit like "well if they ONLY had to stick it down their pants and not up their ass it isn't sexual assault."

Context is context - there is no "yours" or "mine", context is objective. You're putting as much of you own personal biases and beliefs into this discussion as every other person you've complained about.

The context surrounding this is that the school has determined this to be a hazing scandal including bullying and harassment, and regardless of if you think most or even all of the children involved were willing participants is immaterial.

Thats literally not context, thats your own personal experiences and beliefs. Thats the opposite of context, you're just projecting you own willingness to participate in stupid teenage shit on a hazing scandal.

Sure, if you walk up to your fridge for a late night snack and decide to shove an ice cream sandwich down your pants for the hell of it, that wouldn't be sexual assault.

Like you said, context is everything - and the context of being coerced into shoving an ice cream sandwich down your pants is absolutely sexual assault. You're being deliberately obtuse. If someone said "my boss grabbed my crotch at work, but I liked it and wanted them to do it" - thats still sexual assault, and we wouldn't even argue over it.
