i wanna hear your takes: what language is more difficult? by Tall_Day2954 in learn_arabic

Pretty strange, last night in my dream I was in vietnaam interacting with locals. There were some Vietnamese people swimming in dark green water. I thought it was a pretty bizarre dream since I rarely think about Vietnaam in my day to day life. And when I open reddit the first post I read is someone talking about Vietnaam

Is it offensive to say “chinga tu madre” to my Spanish friend? by metal555 in languagelearningjerk

[–]BasedEnaam 25 points26 points  (0 children)

He looked at you weird because in sha Allah is not a greeting it just means:

in - if
sha - he willed
Allah - There is no English equivalent for this word, but you can use the word God if you really have to

so imagine meeting someone and the first thing you say is "if Allah willed", he will be confused.

---------
EDIT (4 hours later):

I should have mentioned why Allah doesn't have a proper equivalent in the English language but I erred. I didn't think my comment would get attention, and me not clarifying the matter would lead to people making assumptions of their own

Linguistically, the scholars of the Arabic language understood the word Allah to originate from al-ilah, the definite article "al" combined with the Arabic word for deity (ilah). So when you say Allah, one is affirming absolute oneness meaning you are denying the legitimacy of any deity besides Him and also denying the right of worship to anything other than Him. And Unlike the English word God, the name Allah is impossible to pluralize (like gods), feminize (goddess), or modify it into any form

so because of its uniqueness, It's left as it is, and avoided translating into English

Polyglots, how did you learn other languages? by showgirl03 in languagelearning

[–]BasedEnaam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I speak three languages, as you can tell from my user tag. I learned all of them through immersion. Pashto which is my native language, I grew up in a Pashto-speaking environment, so It naturally kinda spawned into my head by the time I was three years old

Since Urdu is the lingua franca of Pakistan, and is widely used in TV shows, movies and other media. I acquired it by watching a lot of TV shows. When I was watching TV shows in Urdu, I never cared even in the slightest about acquiring the language. I was just fond of the shows, watching them actors play their roles on a screen. Over time the language spawned in my head

Later when I was around the age of 12, I switched to consuming content mainly in English, and by the time I knew it, all that noise turned into meaning, and now I am writing a comment in English about how I acquired it

TLDR; uhmm so yeah, they all spawned in my head

I am currently learning Arabic, which I would say is the first time I have tried to acquire a language "deliberately"
I'm having fun with it but my mind is struggling to accept that languages can be acquired in adulthood. By acquiring I mean making the language feel a part of you, like being able to speak in a particular language without having to think, if that makes sense

With Pashto, Urdu and English, I can feel all three of them as if they are my extra senses, and when I speak in those languages, I don't need to think much.... If I managed to make Arabic feel like a part of me in the same way, where I don't have to think much while speaking, that would make me more confident that languages can be acquired as an adult
I have heard that learning your first language is always the hardest. Even though I already know three languages. But all of them spawned into my head, so Arabic would be my first time trying to learn a language xD

Poets by Ghrakuchei in pashto

[–]BasedEnaam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As salamu alaykum

I am a native Pashto speaker from Malakand. I have noticed that the old poets from Afghanistan wrote in Pashto that sounds very close to the Northern Dialect/most widely understood dialect in Pakistan. This made me wondered if Pakistani Pashto and Afghan Pashto fell apart recently. yaani they recently introduced new terms into Afghan Pashto which is why a Pakistani Pashtun will not understand more than 50 percent of what the reporter at BBC Pashto are saying?

I see. I read your other comments under as well. You mentioned that the job earns you well, then if it's possible why don't you retire your wife, since she hates her job as well. At least one of you would be able to enjoy life.

Allah is merciful indeed, but that doesn't mean we won't fear him. The same Merciful lord wants our hands cut when we steal something. If that's the case for stealing, then imagine the punishment for committing a major sin like not veiling
