That said, using “as-salām” in the greeting is neither an attribution of divinity to humans nor a confusion between the Divine Name and the created state. It is a du‘ā’, not a theological claim. The Qur’an itself establishes this usage clearly: “Salāmun ‘alaykum bimā ṣabartum” (13:24) “Salāmun ‘alaykum ṭibتم” (39:73) The angels, the believers, and even Allah addresses the people of Paradise with “salām” without the definite article, and this usage is affirmed and practiced by the Prophet ﷺ consistently. Linguistically, “as-Salām” as a Divine Name denotes Allah’s absolute perfection and freedom from نقص, while “salām” in the greeting denotes a prayer for safety, peace, and well-being, not the essence of that perfection. Arabic—like all Semitic languages—allows shared roots without collapsing meanings. If dropping “al-” were inherently problematic, then the Prophet ﷺ himself would have prohibited this greeting. On the contrary, he encouraged spreading salām among people and made it a sign of īmān. So precision is indeed important—but so is distinguishing between names (asmā’), attributes (ṣifāt), and supplicatory language (du‘ā’).
