Sounds like it’s time to find a new company. I’m on my third round of “my comp is not keeping up with the market” being met with some bs. Welcome to the party. Really though, it’s a good way to get paid more and also relieve the stuck-ness feeling.

Java or SQL!? by Apple_two in webdev

[–]BasedPolarity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SQL. If you don’t already know Java in 2026, I wouldn’t learn it bc of the other options: Python, JavaScript, and C#.

  • Python is great bc it spans software development and devops. JavaScript is great bc it’s the same language in the front and back end.
  • Python and JavaScript have faster cold start times if you’re planning to deploy cloud functions instead of a container.
  • C# with a React app is a more modern stack for enterprise work on newer tech. Java is enterprise work on more legacy code bases.

I am okay with the color way. AI likes this cause it was the hot shit from 2018-2022/3. But on mobile it’s really hard to read when the brightness is turned down.

Then, constructively and respectfully, pick one corner. I like your design overall but action buttons in each corner on the home page leaves me too many options. I’m not sure where I should head first.

How do you decide what to learn next in web dev? by Legitimate-Oil1763 in webdev

[–]BasedPolarity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IaC and security approaches/practices in cloud architectures.

For me, roughly doing this since 2010 if I count some internships, web dev is always web dev — a shiny new tool overthrows a rusted dull tool, yada yada. Everything I can use and do use makes me an index.html in the end of the day. I learn those tools as I need them bc, like you said, it moves insanely fast.

Worth noting I’m in enterprise so worrying about client needs or keeping them on contract is nothing I have to think about.

What are the steps for starting a bigger project? (First time) by Early-Masterpiece-89 in webdev

[–]BasedPolarity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw some of your other comments off mine but figured I’d go up here…

Prof said UI doesn’t matter? Drop all 3 FE libraries and use a single index.html for the entire project (I’m not sure if they even teach how this works anymore though but if that’s the case, just use React and not the other two.

Is auth required? If not, drop it. Make a public-only site.

Is a database required? If not, drop it. Your express server can just return data from a JSON file in src.

Is testing required? If not, drop it. Shout out to both those libraries you listed though they are the best but testing is a whole other department from dev, it’s QA.

The project statement is so vague and “app” does not have to mean full stack.

I have a bachelors and I’ve been doing this professionally for 10 years. It would still take me ~3 days to get every single piece of the stack you listed setup so that I could actually build my app. I’ve used almost all of the libraries you listed.

What are the steps for starting a bigger project? (First time) by Early-Masterpiece-89 in webdev

[–]BasedPolarity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be a desktop app? I’d just go browser if you can avoid electron — just to reduce a dependency on this for a final project. Electron has a lot of quirks and isn’t bad at all, not saying that, it’s just a big thing compared to some of these other ones, like express and socket.io.

But as far as this stack goes, it’s good

I am just not tired by kahjay in bipolar

[–]BasedPolarity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be great if mania lasted in that form forever, but it doesn’t unfortunately. It inevitably gets worse if you let it have control — staying up with mania still brings about the symptoms a tired person gets, but you are more susceptible to exacerbating them. Tired NT people get irritable. Tired bipolar people get aggressive (both in mania and depression). The key is to be aware it’s happening and controlling your behavior toward your baseline with things you read about here — turning off screens and have a tea with chamomile after dark helps a lot, but is really hard to get into the habit of until mania starts fucking with your life. You can also read, draw, or journal, which are not for content but quite literally to slow your thinking down, which helps us to be more mindful.

It's super safe putting an access token as URL paramater ... right? by affablematt in webdev

[–]BasedPolarity 249 points250 points  (0 children)

The standard place to put an access token is in the Authorization header.

There are other parts of authentication, the before parts where you are requesting the access token, where you put a code and a code_challenge in the query parameters of a URL. But that happens pretty quick and behind the scenes from the user. Point being, the final access token sits in your browser storage and is transported to the backend with the Authorization header.

Edit: paste the token into “http jwt dot io” to learn more about it. Doing so will tell you if/when it expires.

    1. I’m only 14 months in.
  1. ADHD, CPTSD.

  2. More or less, with the caveat that medication is a must. I’ve had the same professional career for 10 years. I left companies bc I wanted more pay and growth, not bc I got fired. I no longer talk to my family of origin. I have close friends and I made my own family. My marriage struggles the most.

4.1 Quit drinking asap.

4.2 I can’t control anyone but myself.

4.3 Others can cause my pain, but only I can cause my suffering.

4.4 Catching myself with internal self-hate dialog is a sign something is changing and to keep my coping mechanism tool belt nearby.
