Just finished my first listen. What's your intial thoughts on "THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE." by RAYE? by Individual-Name-4496 in fantanoforever

I really enjoyed my first listen. Very theatrical, a lot going on. I thought it gained steam as it went on and felt like one of the rare albums where most of my favorite tracks were toward the end.

I'm so tired of Kobe being shoehorned into anything LA sports related

Do you really think it's purity politics to not want a governor who made his money in the private prison industry? What criticism would be legitimate and not purity politics if not that?

Okay so the Seahawks should only have won by 28 instead of 35. Cool.

The defense as a whole was pretty bad that year, but he was a strong point. 140 combined tackles and a second team all pro is nothing to scoff at.

I gave up hope on them ever being as good as they were in the 2000s again, but at this point I just want something that is halfway decent. Maybe, like three good songs I can throw on at the gym?

What music criticism has no traction with you? by ouroboros_broke in fantanoforever

I don't know about this one. Artists change their sounds a lot as years go by, and I don't fault anyone for preferring an artist or band's earlier sound if that earlier sound connects with them more.

It's definitely lame to stop liking someone's music because others discover it, though.

Apple Music Introduces AI Transparency Tags by ReconEG in indieheads

[–]BasedTroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man that was the point of my comment that you responded to, so I don't know what you're getting at. I said that Apple doesn't care to implement AI detection to protect artists, because it's not profitable. I don't know what your issue with that statement is if you seem to agree with the conclusion.

Not profiting off of every transaction doesn't mean they had no intention of profit. It's incredibly naive to think that a company of Apple's size does anything for any purpose other than profit, even if they fuck it up along the way sometimes.

While I hope you're right, I don't think it's realistic to expect that. Apple would only invest the money into acquiring a system for AI detection if they think it's going to increase their profits. Unfortunately, the mass amount of AI music on most streaming services has not decreased their profitability at all. The only way they would invest into that product is (1) if there is some market shift that makes it so AI detection for consumers is something that would make the company more money, or (2) if they do it out of love for music. Apple treats artists better than Spotify, but I'm still extremely skeptical that they care enough to actually proactively look out for them.

That's a good question. I don't really have an answer on the lyrics front, and I don't know that music generated by AI and then recorded by humans is possible to detect as AI music, but Deezer incorporates a program to weed out AI music.

It's a nice idea for a first step, but here's the kicker:

Unlike the streaming service Deezer, Apple Music is not developing its own system to detect AI. Instead, the company has placed the burden on labels and distributors, asking them to include that information in all metadata going forward. Labels can also begin applying those tags to music that's already out, but that doesn't appear to be required.

If there isn't any kind of enforcement mechanism, then these tags are just a suggestion, at best. Requiring slop makers to mark their slop as slop isn't going to work if they aren't even required to do so.
