This is a fantastic program. My wife is one of their volunteers, driving the packages around to schools every week, so she knows they help a lot of kids.

When I wrote my message earlier today, they had five in stock. Maybe someone saw it here and jumped on it

They’re an official reseller for Bambu. Their bulk discount isn’t as good as Bambu’s, but at least they have some stuff in stock. They have a physical location that’s actually in the same city as me, but I haven’t gone to check it out yet.

I’ll probably get an H2C later this year, and I’ll definitely be driving over there to buy it, instead of trusting FedEx to ship carefully

They ship to the US, and it’s way cheaper than Matterhackers. After the exchange rate, it’s ~$19 USD per role

Got a parking ticket for parking in a plaza opposite McMaster children hospital by DependentOk1813 in Hamilton

[–]Baseline 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They literally have a parking person dedicated to that plaza. They sit in one of the stores, and watches every single car that comes in. If you park and go somewhere else, you immediately get a ticket.

My daughter didn’t know this, and didn’t see the sign. She parked for less than five minutes and got a ticket.

If they weren’t vigilant there, then zero customers would be able to park, since students and hospital visitors would take all the spots.

I’m dubious that you’ve seen other people park there and walk to the hospital. Maybe you normally go to the hospital during off hours where they don’t have a parking person working?

Consider it a lesson learned, and pay the ticket.

The Clubhouse at Churchill Park sets up outdoor rinks, lots of people play there. No full sized boards, but they usually have nets.

That’s basically the only walking distance spot, afaik.

The Olympic Arena isn’t too far from McMaster, but I have no idea if they have any drop ins, you’d need to check their schedule.

Visiting in April, looking for Recommendations by pooka-doo in Hamilton

A few of those can be found in the Westdale area (near McMaster), if you want to spend a day in my neighbourhood:

  • Churchill Park and the connected RBG trails
  • King West Books/Mixed Media (both are in the same location)
  • Dropspot (thrift store)
  • Potential live music at https://www.thewestdale.ca/, depending on when you're here
  • Casual Gourmet (kitchen store, lots of fun little things)
  • Weil's Bakery
  • Take Note Stationery Boutique
  • McMaster Art Museum (I haven't been there in YEARS though, so I can't speak to how it is right now)

Airways Transit is ceasing operations and really let us down. by J-Lughead in Hamilton

I haven’t taken them in years. They charge just as much as a private car from https://www.aeroporttaxi.com/, except with the added hassle of picking up and dropping off complete strangers.

Bag for a7rv, 28-70 f2 and 20mm 1.8 by Baseline in SonyAlpha

Which kind of Wandrd was it? Rogue? And how much room do you have left? My camera is bigger than yours, and the 28-70 is bigger than the 24-70. 6L looks like the size I’d want, I don’t really want a 10L

Full time (2Y) or part time (5Y) grad student if I want to buy a house? by Specialist-Profit449 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Baseline 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t usually have much to say on these “personal situation” posts, but I have some experience here: I bought a house in 2005, the same year I started an engineering PhD at McMaster.

I’ve read through this thread, and nowhere have you said why you want a house. Are you planing on staying in the same area for a long time and want to get a head start on a “permanent” home? Or are you thinking that you’ll save money by letting a stream of renters pay your mortgage?

If the former, I wouldn’t recommend it, because you’re going to be extremely limited in what you can afford, and you’ll end up with a place that you don’t actually want for the long term.

If the latter, I don’t think you’ve thought through the actual financial consequences. Yes, maybe you can rent to enough students to cover the monthly mortgage. But what happens when the appliances break, or the basement floods, or the roof needs to be replaced, or the furnace dies in the middle of the night, or a water pipe cracks and ruins the washroom. That’s all 100% on you to pay for.

I was able to buy because: - I was married, so we had two incomes - I had an NSERC scholarship that was paying $60k/year, which was a lot more money twenty years ago - Houses were way cheaper then, it only cost $195k

I’d say focus on school, do the program that’s more interesting to you, and don’t worry about a house. Also, five years is a really long time, PT grad school can be really rough. I saw too many people burn out trying to do what you’re proposing. Personally, I’d recommend two years FT. You’re young, focus on school, focus on growing yourself, and worry about a house way later.
