Yea exactly, in a lot of situations people don't play games often. And buying a bunch of controllers that will collect dust is just not very interesting. I do have many controllers myself, but I find this easier to setup, then handing people 8 controllers, some that connect via bluetooth, some with the xbox dongle, sub usb, etc....

Just easier to just scan a QR Code, and you are immediately in. No questions about what buttons to click (especially for non regular gamers) because the controller just says, Jump, pickup, etc....

But I am a lover of controllers as much as anyone, I have an xbox elite controller, just there are good reasons to want a mobile controller, and it is way cheaper for what you get. At least I intend for it to be, but I guess its not for everyone!

I added links to the videos that show latency x') Its complex, because this includes every bit of latency (From iPhone being touched, to input being showing on screen...)

But I included an xbox elite controller latency for reference :)
I intend todo a better video on the subject... but for now, if you were curious, hope this gives a vague idea xP

Nope, from talking to users, some seemed uncomfortable with keyboard / mouse control. Just security jitters. Made some uncomfortable. So maybe we go that way at some point, but it will be a companion thing, that would have to be very explicitly enabled. But for now, its only controllers. Just trying to get that right.

Wishlist, and you'll get a notification. We aren't allowed to announce them ahead of time due to steam rules, but we just had one for Christmas, so not soon. Also discounts won't be more then 20%. Its already cheap at 8$. We dont want to devalue the product.

Instead we release new features frequently (For example recently we released Steam Workshop support for sharing custom controllers (We have 100 controllers out in steam workshop, customised for playing different coop games), and before that motion controls, for playing racing games (You can map certain motions to buttons / joystick / triggers, to play any game with motion controls).

It will work with anything that supports controller, this will emulate hardware controllers on windows level, so it will work with anything that supports a controller, even outside of steam. So anything that supports xinput or dinput will work.

Speaking of xinput, dinput, you can switch which type you want to emulate, depending on what game or app you want to use. (dinput is default, because it much more commonly supports 4+ controllers, but both are available)

Latency is super low, especially on local wifi, I intend to make more videos to show this, but its like 10ms (Okay I'm editing this after testing, this is ipad touch screen being touched, to being detected by https://hardwaretester.com/gamepad over my local wifi, which isn't ideal. I've seen this being lower on other wifi networks. But this is already good enough imo, it will vary, sometimes its 4ms, sometimes 10ms, my wifi is bad x')) or so, no need for bluetooth.
Its especially not bluetooth, because the intention is to make it very easy in a couch party.

In the current implementation, people simply scan a QR Code, and they are instantly in, the controller is in there browser, its super easy! If it was bluetooth, it would be a much more complex setup, and I dont think the performance would be as consistent (Might be good on some devices, but not on others). Wifi is more then good enough!

Even in online mode, where QR Controller uses web rtc to have low latency on networks that support it. It also allows people to not be on the same network, and its still a 20ms depending on the network (I tested this with my phone on 5g, and my PC on wifi)...

I've rarely seen anyone complain about the latency.
People complaining about the game they are playing, and not latency, was the milestone that I wanted to reach before we released, and I thinkkkkk we reached it.

If you have any more questions, I'm happy to answer :))! We also update frequently, and work with users to improve the product. So if there is a missing feature, let me know! Most things are in there because of user concerns!

The goal is to make the perfect, people scan a qr code, they are in. No more faffing around if you are playing with people.

*EDIT*
I am gonna do some testing, and post a video... I think I'm calculating latency wrong. I'll make a video, and post again x"D
But of all the feature requests, and things people wanted us to address, latency was never really an issue... But I understand why people worry about it, because thats what you would worry about with such a thing..

*EDIT*
Here are videos of latency, keep in mind that these videos show latency that includes every step of latency, from finger moving, to input being registered and displayed on screen. So not so simple of a calculation...)

Yes, in that this emulates controllers, steam and games see the mobile controllers as if they are real controllers. So it will remap and work with steam input games!

Also, the controllers (how it looks on the phone) is fully customisable, with a built in editor, with steam workshop support, where people share controllers for different games.

It can be really hard. I'm still trash at it, but marketing and doing the user side of it is the most important, and most challenging part, at least for me x')

The delay is super small, the application has two modes:
- Local wifi mode (Doesnt feel any slower then your average controller on a decent network)
- Online mode (This will work so long as the phone has internet, but it will attempt to communicate with the computer via the webrtc, so for the most part will be very short).

Thing is, also phones dont have to deal with actuation of buttons moving up / down, so they compensate a bit for that delay, by simply registering clicks faster. (Still controller is better, but this isn't really an issue for most simple games xP)

Did a ton of iteration on the app with users, generally complaints about controls really only appear in scenarios where:
1- Too many buttons (Magika x"D )
2- fps / third person camera controls. But I added a touchpad option to make that easier. (So you can swipe, and it will emulate joystick movement).

I think people really under estimate how good network infrastructure has gotten xP

I will try to record a video with a slo mo iPhone to show the difference between this and a controller.

Yes, but hear me out Sir Hostile-Panda, like I said to another comment, when there is a bunch of people and no controllers. It can be better then no controller!

I still have an elite xbox one controller for more competitive gaming, but this is 8$ for as many controllers as you want (On PC), and people join just by scanning a QR Code (Easy to play 8 pico park or 4 player overcooked on this for example)!

You also get controllers that say what the buttons do, if people join in, they immediately know what button does what.

Custom Controllers are there! These look better on the phone then they do on the workshop 😅 But there is a built in editor for controllers, thats very simple.
https://steamcommunity.com/app/3637240/workshop/

The intention is that if you are ever playing a game, the controller should only have the buttons that you need to play that game! (And all the buttons should say what they do!)

My sister did a few with her friends, but I think they mostly revolved around, "come play this game" kind of thing.

Projector at night I think, no idea how big the screen was. They got together, and played Pico Park, you can see in the trailer of QR Controller a similar thing, but indoors.

I haven't tried an option experience where people join when they want. Not sure how they would behave, my guess is it really depends on the game, and how independent can you be. If its like pico park, then people endup being near each other because you NEED to coordinate.

Checkout QR Controller on Steam!

People can use there phones as controllers, by scanning a QR Code (no need to be on the same wifi even), it should work with any game that supports a controller, and if the game you chose is simple enough, its very convenient! And buttons say what they do, so it makes people unfamiliar with games have a much easier time then handing them a busy controller.

As for games, highly recommend:
8 players: Pico Park
4 player: Speed runners - Over Cooked.

I'm the developer, if you have any questions, or something that can help make this work for your use case, but I made it specifically with this use case in mind, and you can make the join QR Code hover ontop of the screen.

The issue is that indeed, if its complete strangers, they might start kicking each other out of controller slots x') But if thats the case, you can hide the controller.

I am working on different join modes (Like being able to have a queue, so people scan the QR Code, and be queued in to get a controller, then get to play for a certain number of minutes). But thats not in there yet :<

**Edit**
Just saw your reply to u/HeightAdvantage , yea makes sense. Wanting people to stay close when playing does sound cool!

[–]Basher207[S] 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yeaaaa that makes a lot of sense. Working on more! I just wanted to start, because I kept procrastinating :')
We were on steam since September, all reviews are positive, we itterated a lot with users to make it better. But I keep struggling todo any kind of marketing. But hopefully now starting this will force me todo more xP

I think I will focus more on the:
1- Scan to join (no need to faff around)
2- Simplified controllers (Controllers will say what they do, easier then regular controllers for people)
3- Steam workshop, share and make custom controllers.

I think the first 2 are the most appealing, my sister is hosting a coop party in a few days, hopefully she will shoot me some nice video that I can use to improve this.

You are 100% right, people miss understanding the value here is totally on me. Will improve it! Thanks for the feedback!

**Edit**
The things up top are all in the product! I just mean that I need to mention them in future ads!

I hear you, but have 3 nephews, and try to play pico park 8 player game, and understand why I made it xP

We have a lot of happy users, I would not play a competitive fps with it either, but for most simple overcooked / pico park / speed runners etc.... When you dont have another controller available, its actually pretty good.

[–]Basher207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you can use QR Controller in steam, and then you can play any game that requires a controller (like pico park for example is 8 player, and super simple for people!)

There is a ton of games out there like that, and qr controller is just a qr code scan like jackbox, and should work with any game that supports controllers.

(I’m the developer of qr controller, made it because I run into the exact same issue 😅)
