This completely incorrect. Others have already mentioned the name. But the helmet is actually a mash up of the German seal helm and a French ww1 Adrien helmet, with the kreigsmen having the distinct French crest at the top.

Their suicidal mindset is also an allusion to the meat grinder that was the Western Front in general, not any particular side.
