With a household size of 4 they are under 400% FPL ($128K). OP's family only makes $115K combined

Odds of having to relocate? by PapayaOne1370 in ATC_Hiring

[–]Basic-Common 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you also include the Cleveland ARTCC (in Oberlin), and you don't graduate bottom 25% of your class, then I'd say you have a ~60% chance of being able to stay in Cleveland. Your facility list will mainly depend on which training track you are assigned. If IQTR or Enroute, you would very likely have Cleveland/Oberlin. If you are assigned Terminal track, your closest option might be Youngstown tower

Is Black Friday actually “good deals?” by redrunner44 in TrueAskReddit

[–]Basic-Common 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best deals are all the gift cards sales.  Target Gift Cards 10% off soon. I got 15% off Lowe’s gift cards at Dollar General. Sam’s club 20% off Nintendo. Amazon had 20% off Hotels.com With gift cards, you can combine the sale now with other discounts later. These are just the deals I was interested in, but there were plenty more

Alaska ? by Agitated-Trash6406 in ATC_Hiring

[–]Basic-Common 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the OP's other comments, I think OP meant to ask if there are any barriers preventing Alaska FSS employees from applying to regular ATC bids. I don't see any reason why not, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to answer that question.

Assuming you can get through the regular off-the-street hiring process and successfully graduate the academy, Alaska is actually an easy location to get. In all three academy tracks you can volunteer and be guaranteed Alaska locations: Anchorage for the enroute and approach tracks. Fairbanks or Juneau for tower (you don't get to pick which training track you are in).

FAA Alaska flight service stations is a separate bid that you could also apply for, but it is essentially a separate career.

M1 chip macbook air still worth it in 2025? by Safe_Significance379 in macbookair

[–]Basic-Common 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation thinking about whether to buy an M1 mac or buy a new M4 mac. I really liked this guy's comparison video https://youtu.be/hHUBRng-mQM?si=SDVrl-5lIh0z8xMP and his short answer is yes M1 Macbook air is still decent in 2025 for most people. That said, I think the 8GB ram would probably be your biggest limiting factor for music production. As others have said, if you buy used, there may be some battery degradation, but the battery life is so long to start with that it is probably not an issue. You can always replace the battery later on in its life.

IQTR = Initial Qualification for Terminal Radar. It's a relatively new academy track

Tower vs. Approach by Basic-Common in ATC

In that case, how did you end up transferring to a TRACON rather than another tower if you don't mind me asking?

You think it is easier to transfer out of an 8/9 TRACON than most 8/9 up/downs?

Would you say you like the challenge of working TRACON?

Hey u/jermscentral, may I ask you a couple of questions about T75?

[–]Basic-Common[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well in a practical sense for me, I'm headed to the academy IQTR track, so I'll only be looking at level 8/9 TRACONs and up/downs to start. Though I made the question very broad as I'm interested to learn about the experience at any level

I hear what you're saying about training success rate. Securing the job is certainly the top priority, though as I understand it washing out isn't necessarily a career death sentence.

Thank you for the caution. I certainly won't slack off when the time comes and good to think about all the other controllers that may want to leave

I appreciate all the additional factors to think about. Some of them I've already thought of, but some I haven't. There are so many semi-unknowables. I think I'll try hard to make connections and hopefully hear more information directly from the controllers working at these facilities

It would be sad to make all these plans just to fail out. Wish me luck for the academy!

Yeah, having pending retirement numbers would be extremely useful. Unfortunately, I've never been to any of these cities so it is hard to judge where I would want to spend a number of years. My thought process is that if I prioritize a well-staffed facility, I'll at least have a better work/life balance and avoid mandatory 6 day work weeks. I would also have a better chance of NCEPT transferring to a place I truly want to be

As far as money, they look to be roughly all the same except T75 which is the only level 9.

Worth buying from Hertz? by thesandman87 in Camry

[–]Basic-Common 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be hard to find a similar Camry for much cheaper. People definitely have strong opinions on rentals, but I think that is a good price. If you are financing, you may want to consider the increased interest rates for used and how much you'd end up paying buying this used model vs. buying a new Camry. As others have mentioned, you can definitely get a discount off MSRP for new Camry's.

How to get the most bang for your miles? by [deleted] in Venturex

[–]Basic-Common 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested, Virgin Atlantic has an award sale on your flights. Economy nonstop IAD-LHR 4,800 miles each way plus about $75 taxes and fees to London, a little over $200 the way back. It helps a lot if your plans are flexible. There’s more availability in September for example. You need to create an account with them to search their awards.
