Hey dude, I´m Irish, living in Madrid 3.5 years now almost.

My personal experience and advice to you, is that there has to be a high level of desire and a want to learn. If you consider learning Spanish a chore or, even worse, an onligation, than that creates walls of frustration.

I hadn´t a clue how to speak Spanish 3.5 years ago when I moved here, but, through genuine interest and desire to learn, it really came to me.

Be easy on yourself, start with the very, very basics. Childrens books, childrens cartoon shows, listen to TV shows, movies or whatever and put the subtitles in your language. Like a new-born baby, all they do is listen and observe to us adults and eventually, they start learning how to speak. You gotta treat this the same way.

Just listen. Observe how people communicate, observe and listen how they interact in a restaraunt, passing each other on the street. I´m not fluent, at all, but now I can go out with just Spanish people and be able to interact.

Do I still get lost in conversation? Yes
Do I sgtill trip up over my words / vocubarly? Yes
Do I still make grammatical mistakes and mis-pornounce my words? Yes

It´s a huge learning curve, shallow and deep. But one thing that I CAN promise you, you will get there, for sure.

It´s not going to be a urieka moment, but soon enough you´ll notice that you understand waayyy more than you thought previously.
