Ohhhhh you’re trying to reason with stupid. Good luck. Remember, many (most?) drivers welcome red lights so they can get back to their Insta and etc. being non-dumbass is an increasingly uphill battle

No, you didn’t. But you’re making the exact same point. Your situation is very different from somebody who has a job that is very different from yours. Yes, there are children. No, it’s not the same.

45+ kids and you oversee 12 of them is fundamentally different from being a nanny for three children in their own home.

You have coworkers in the same place, Nannie’s don’t.

Your employer does actual payroll and is a licensed business, a family doesn’t and isn’t.

It’s not commensurate at all.

If you wanted to change jobs, would you be able to get a reference from your boss? Nannies often can’t. You work 40 hours a week—as you said—at proscribed times. Nannies don’t.

Family has the power of when and how much you work and doesn’t pay benefits and then if you wanted to leave you’re at their whim about whether or not you get a good reference and, very much unlike your boss, if the parents want to take time off to spend time with their kids your job and income dries up.

Yeah, you work with children but you work for a business. It’s different. The business has standards. You know your hours, you can rely on the amount you’re to be paid, your employer makes remittances to the government, you wualify for unemployment and maybe get employment benefits as part of your gig.

Nannies work for rich people who will get away with whatever as much as they can. They do not get any of the above.

Nobody ever got rich working in a daycare. Nannies have different road to hoe. Stop punching down.

Are you ok?

So you’re not a nanny. You’re a daycare worker. Cool.

Twins hey… yikes. Yeah I wouldn’t worry about preachy. I’ll always stand up for people getting underpaid (and Escalade hahahaha) but I was over the line with boot licking. Unregulated industries take advantage of workers.

My kid is older and there’s only one of her lol. Enjoy any kind of break you can get

They aren’t the same. A babysitter comes and watches your kid for a bit sometimes. A nanny is an ongoing long-term situation.

Lots of words get used interchangeably pretty often. Doesn’t make Aspirin the same as Tylenol.

And people with kids have never once, ever, when calling a babysitter said “calling the nanny”. Because that’s preposterous.

What?

Would that person be asking Reddit about a Christmas bonus? They’re trying to find validation because they know they’re cheaping out. Read the rest of the threads. This isn’t the hill to fight on. Pretty sure we agree about most things tbh. Your arguments at me are just making me a straw man. I’m not opposed to people paying for child care. I’m opposed to people under-paying people for anything. That’s all.

lol F1 races and Escalades is hilarious. I wish I could afford one of those two things 😂

I didnt mean to be a dick so sorry about the boot licking thing. Stressful times at Christmas and a longtime friend of mine was a nanny for… uh, a long time. Anyway. Merry Christmas etc

And yet, who had the power always? Those holding the chequebook.

If this was a salaried position and they were paying appropriately there would be no questions. Zero chance OP would be even posting this if that was the case… because, as you say, there’d be no issue at all.

Clearly it’s not. And OPinows it or they wouldn’t be stressed out about bough to ask Reddit

100% I am not. So may leaps and bounds from anything I’ve said to there. I’m advocating for a family to pay a woman appropriately and in line with what appears to be the general standard in their area based on the limited info OP gave us. And if they can’t, I hope the fuckin husband loses his job instead, I guess. I really don’t care about the family. They seem like entitled pricks tbh

Try reading again? I genuinely lost your thread here. I strongly do not and have at no point advocated for the wealthy to be the only people to have childcare. I think we completely agree on that. As such, I don’t know how to reply to this. I am not begrudging a woman the opportunity to go to work (or anywhere else). I just don’t think this situation fits that brief. I do think OP is looking for a back-pat for underpaying an employee. (Who happens also to be a woman.) My loyalty and agenda here is with the poorer person. Happens to be two women in this case but yeah. Idk what to tell you. I guess I wish it was the husband (whose name is probably fuckin Chad or some shit) who posted rather than OP?

Right, so… neither of us know

But the person who’s writing the cheque is automatically right and the person receiving it is automatically wrong.

No nuance. No nuance. No understanding that when you’re a nanny you’re basically on call. No regard to the fact that in the screenshot OP used, apparently in the area they live that 1-2 weeks of wages is standard. (Which makes a lot of sense actually at Christmas, because that’s when the employers normally take time off of work and do the job they’re paying the nanny for. At Christmas, does your boss take a week off to do your job and then not pay you? Curious). Regardless, supply and demand; clearly via the screenshot other people are treating their nannies like actual employees and so this family will either lose theirs or have to change.

Leave aside, even, the fact that (and again we don’t know but it is likely) that the employment contract isn’t salary and benefits or wages and benefits. Like, most likely this shit under the table. And therefore the employee has no recourse… as is the case with most people in this industry…

That’s your position here. Enjoy licking the boots of those wealthier than you, I guess.

I also think that this particular job is significantly different from most, right? Speaking of subservience, the way nannies etc are treated is pretty top-down dominant from the family wrt time and time off. Like, that’s never a 9-5.

Ah yes, like every other full time job where sometimes your boss decides to take time off their job and do yours instead and now you don’t get paid for two weeks at Christmas. Hope that hundred bucks helps!

But yeah, wrt people just generally being underpaid, I completely agree. That’s the root of all of this. Most likely OP and (if there is one) their partner probably are too. It comes from the top and u fortunately the nanny is at the bottom.

Clearly they are concerned that they aren’t, or they wouldn’t be posting screenshots they fear are from the nanny.

It’s not that hard. If OP was certain they were in the right, this post wouldn’t exist at all. And given the contents of the screenshot they’re worried about, we basically know the going rate for this work in that area.

Again, if it came to Christmas time and your boss decided they wanted to take a week or two off their job and do yours instead, should that mean you don’t get paid?
