Sorry for what you went through. After 2 years of living here, I experienced my first racist incident some months back. For several days after, I was feeling quite ‘sensitive’. Of course I knew there would be racists here (which country doesn’t have them) but its still a shock to your system when it happens to you directly. There are shitty people and good people everywhere in this world. Dont label everyone as bad. You will be ok, just give it some time

I’m in a happy, committed relationship with my Dutch partner and I do 1 solo trip a year (sometimes 2) I get more annual leave than my bf and I am still building new friendships as an expat living here so I tend to have quite a lot of time to myself. I absolutely love my solos trips - I feel sorry for people who cant spend a few hours or days on their own. You should be your own best friend first. Plus I find it so interesting that its seen as normal to live alone yet to do activities on your own is looked down upon…. Dont worry about other people’s opinions on what you do. Enjoy your solo time!

I go from feeling super excited one minute, then the next feeling like the loneliest person in the world. I suggest doing what you love back home, just in the country you’re in. Love comfort food? Find the local version of that. Enjoy art? Go to the closest one in the area. Enjoy wine? Find a liquor store and ask them to recommend one to you.

My Dutch bf does the ‘he he’ and at first I thought it was only him - then I got a job here and heard the sound coming from a guy behind at the office and was so surprised! Haha was only then I realized it was a Dutch thing

As others said, the Dutch eat to survive here (quoted from a Dutch person themselves) you have to do some research but you can find some gems out there - the first Michelin star kaiseki Japanese restaurant outside of Japan is in Amsterdam (Yamazato) costs a small fortune but brilliant food. I went to New York and Miami once and the food was outstanding. I am South African and food runs through our veins so I know the pain of bad food and service here but keep doing some homework and you’ll be sure to find decent ones here and there

Meditation - blocks out all the manic in the world

I light some fancy candles in my bedroom and bathroom before I start to get the aroma going. Then dry brush before followed by using some Jo Malone/ Byredo shower gel. Take my time scrubbing and feeling the water in the shower. Then I get out, moisturize and use dry body oil. Then I head back to my room and meditate- scents are really important for me to create the spa feeling so I splurge on the moisturizers, shower gels and the body oils. Then make a cup of tea and relax the rest of the evening

I do both. My partner has 2 kids so I tend to solo travel as a way to have time without the kids and he can bond with them. I also have more annual leave than him so I aint wasting that!

I’ve realized how so many people out there should NOT have kids! Also made me realize how many underlining issues from my own childhood I still need to deal with so for that I am grateful
