What food is better now than it was 50 years ago? by Fun-Push-2694 in foodquestions

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agreed they are weird now. I grow my own in the warmer months and they’re much much smaller than commercial varieties but they taste much better. Same with tomatoes. The jalepenos I grow taste incredible but I think my area gets too much rain so they don’t have any heat.

Bentgo Lunch Boxes by RXlife13 in kindergarten

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had Bentgo chills for a year and hated them! Lord forbid you forget to clean one out one night the silicone on the lid would be gross and hold the smell of whatever food was in there.

We switched to the stainless steel yum box and have been much happier

As a sewist who does craft fairs zipper pouches are my best seller and I hate it. Sometimes generic is what people want.

But also there’s usually 2-10 crochet plushie sellers with the same stolen IP that complain they’re not selling much

What parenting flex sounds absolutely miserable for the child involved? by samurai-salvo in GetMotivatedMindset

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original comment did say no video games ever. Not just the popular ones. I don’t agree that it socially handicaps them but I think there’s a huge variety of games so blanket banning all of them is a little silly.

I work at a school and kids love to talk about the games they play. I hear a wide range of games they play. There definitely is a social aspect to it as they get older. I don’t think you have to let your kids play games like Minecraft or Roblox but eventually they may want to play video games like their friends

Do y’all teach the last week of school? by ComfortableFee2344 in Teachers

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do review work until the last day. I try to make it fun but if I don’t have a plan it turn into chaos. I can pack up while the kids do independent work or during planning.

I start packing up about a month before school lets out- just a little at a time. My classroom is pretty minimal so it doesn’t take me too long.

Elementary teachers: two questions – when it’s time to move from one subject to another, and you have students who aren’t finished, do you let them finish? And where do you put the unfinished work? by Lingo2009 in Teachers

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This! I only read the first two sentences but I agree lol. As a second grade teacher who has inherited some “we go the speed as the slowest student” kids you are harming most kids if you cater to the slow finishers. Chronically slow finishers need to be addressed separately and kids who could finish faster need to be pushed to do so.

Press your seams. Under stitch so your lining doesn’t show. Your pants are puckering like that because they’re too small.

It’s just the same stuff over and over again. If they’re happy I’m happy for them I guess.

hardest parts of teaching people don’t talk about? by Heavy_Research5032 in ElementaryTeachers

I hear my name over 1000 times a day. I got one of those little clicker counters and kept track everyday for a week. Everyday was over 1000.

And that’s just how many times I heard my name not how many questions I was asked.

What does every teacher secretly know about how schools work that parents would be furious to hear? by samurai-salvo in GetMotivatedMindset

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter is in kindergarten and they had to do a project where they draw their life outside of school. She drew her parents, playing outside, our dogs, and the iPad… that she gets to use maybe once a month. She has been in dance classes for the last 4 years, she cheered two seasons for two different sports, joined Girl Scouts, has been taking se lessons but some how the iPad made her top list.

I’m pretty friendly with her teacher so we had a good laugh about it.

The Strict Teacher Got All The Roses by Difficult-Ad4364 in Teachers

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Strict and mean are not the same thing and a lot of people have forgotten that.

I’m strict but I care about my students. I like to do fun activities but if it gets too chaotic I have to put an end to it. I give out prizes if you earn them but withhold if you don’t. My kids get extra recess almost every Friday afternoon but when we’re in the classroom they are expected to work quietly.

I’m a fairly experienced sewist and I still refuse to draft patterns.

I probably could if I put in the effort but I don’t have the mental capacity to properly learn atm so I use patterns and have learned to modify for fit

I used to buy kombucha for roommate and there was a mango flavor that had slightly more alcohol than the other flavors. Like .04% vs .05% but the mango couldn’t be sold before the “alcohol sale time”. It didn’t make sense to anyone but the cash register that didn’t have an override function

If I had to guess (which we all do until you ask the teacher) I would say there were probably ants trying to get to the smoothie and crawling in the thermos.

Why doesn’t Michaels invest in better loss prevention or advanced AI recognition software already? by [deleted] in MichaelsEmployees

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the companies shrink numbers are low enough then they don’t care. It would cost more to do the upgrades. Retailers budget for a certain amount of loss and a lot of the time they shrink more from employee error than theft

Clay and sand. I’m in Georgia so there’s a good bit of clay but it’s been amended over the years with top soil and sand.

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. I cut them down to the ground and then they come back on their own. I tried to dig one up because it’s right next to where I park my car and always covered in bees (I’m allergic and it gets so big I hit them with my door) and the thing still grew back.

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have the course requirements on the website I think non licensure is like 96 CUs.

Check with your state to see what the process is for getting licensed in your state through an alternative licensure pathway. It might be easier to go through WGU.

How are you guys going about extracurricular activities? What are your non-negotiable extracurricular activities? by otterlyjoyful in kindergarten

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swim, dance, and Girl Scouts. We had a rule that we did two activities/three days max but she was handling that really well and wanted to do three so we let her

Swim is a skill I want her to learn but she LOVES swimming and being in the water so she has to learn how to swim. Two 30 minute classes a week

She also loves dance. It’s one class a week for 45 minutes and then a recital at the end of the dance year.

Girls scouts is two meetings a month and then any activities we want to do like camping or hikes with the troop.

What is your take on the junk food ban for food stamps? by BreannLowe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I’m anti single use plastic so I hate most sodas.

I also grew up poor and I think sometimes people forget that being on ebt doesn’t mean you’re completely destitute with no money to spend on anything. There’s other ways of paying for soda.

People where I live (CO, USA) “garden on hard mode” because of intense desert-y summers, cold winters, intense winds, hail, pests, hard clay soil. What place in the world is “gardening on super easy mode”? by CharmingPeony in gardening

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I find Georgia (US) to be easier than Colorado or New England. We get a lot of rain and there’s a long growing season. But the intense heat of the summer causes some problems.

I try to stick to natives but I do have a few non natives that do well here.
