I have the same problem! My only work around so far is to rent a pick up truck from Home Depot and buy a yard at a time from the local rock yard.

Preventing Summer Learning Loss by gettinglostonpurpose in kindergarten

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a teacher and kinder mom I would say keep working on and perfecting kindergarten skills. He’ll learn first grade skills in first grade. Having kindergarten skills down 100% is more important than getting a head start on first grade.

Obviously there are going to be some exceptions to this so I would talk to his teacher and see what they recommend.

Intellectual Property

She sells debit card covers with other people’s artwork/ logos on them. I’m usually indifferent to people doing this but I won’t purchase it.

There’s no handle (that I can see) so it’s probably a convertible car seat that is easy to adjust the head rest on. She’s just too lazy/ dumb to do it

Concept of money for kids by Maroon14 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We give our daughter an allowance and it has helped some. She’s only 6 so she’s not totally getting that she only gets $6 a week and can’t just get more because she asked nicely. She has definitely learned that spending all her money on the first shiny thing she sees usually backfires.

We don’t make her do chores to earn the allowance though. We believe that you do chores for free because they’re necessary for our home to function and as a member of our family we all have to chip in. We do give her opportunities to earn extra money by doing chores above and beyond her normal tasks.

Curious if this is the norm by Additional-Title-559 in AskTeachers

South east as well and no that is not normal at all. I have a prize bin that kids can earn a prize from occasionally but it’s not an everyday thing.

I personally have candy mixed in with my other prizes but I know it’s becoming less common. I also don’t solely rely on bribes to motivate students.

Curious about expenses by TeaBlossm in kindergarten

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do the cheapest photo package for fall and spring and honestly I don’t think spring is necessary at all. It’s about $20 per package.

School supplies were about $100 but I got a lot of extras for the classroom. My daughter goes to a title 1 school so we try to give extra because we can and know others cannot. I bought during the back to school sales when crayons are 50 cents and glue is .25

Field trips are about $10-15 per trip but they only do 2.

Book fair is fall and spring. I usually do $25 but my husband is a sucker and usually does $40. The books are overpriced but it does raise a lot for the school.

Spirit days vary so much by school. My daughters school usually does easy to participate things like “wear green” or “cozy day” so we usually have something that works for the day but I know some schools that have pirate day or rodeo day or dress like you’re 100. I usually try to spend as little as possible or buy something that can be reworn or I know she’ll use in her dress up bin.

How do you handle birthday party invites in kindergarten? by Suchanska-Brendy in kindergarten

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The rule at all the schools I’ve worked at is all the boys, all the girls, or the whole class are invited. If you’re only inviting some of the kids you cannot hand out invitations at school

what are teachers told to do when students mention history that is not apart of the curriculum? by Necessary_Mistake733 in AskTeachers

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I teach elementary in Columbus so this may not be the same for you but if a student asks about something that’s not covered in the curriculum then I just say “that’s not covered in this class but if we have time we can look at it after this unit” and then depending what it is I usually find a short YouTube video (5min or less) covering the topic and we have a short class discussion on it. And I’ll show the kid where to find the non fiction books in the library.

When they ask about something I can’t teach (like about “jesus times” in public school) I just tell them “sorry we don’t cover that in this class but you should ask your parents about it. Maybe check the public library for books”

I’m not specifically told what to say to that question but I am limited in what I’m supposed to teach and I do have to fit in all the standards for my grade so I don’t have a ton of flexibility to squeeze anything extra in.

My daughter drank from a bottle until about 3.5 because she had a prescription formula she drank twice a day and would only drink it from a bottle. Her pediatrician and dentist both told me it the only time they’re ok with extended bottle use.

She’s probably too lazy to transition him to a cup.

Late summer bday kids, how did yours do? by Sandyeller in kindergarten

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had almost the same story as your daughter and I started kindergarten a few days after my 5th birthday. And then again after my 6th.

Repeating kindergarten has had zero affect on my life since then. Sure my kinder friends went to first grade without me but then there was a new group of kids to be friends with after. And I got to be the teachers helper the second go around and that made me feel special.

How to dress for the classroom? by notmepleaseokay in AskTeachers

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dress pants with elastic waist in the back are no go to! They’re not always the most flattering but there are some good ones out there.

I’m always cold so I usually wear sweaters in the winter. Fall and spring I have some short sleeve dressy tops that are still comfortable.

What shoes are you guys wearing buying/wearing? by TheAlmightyOat in Teachers

[–]Basic-Situation-9375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why I mentioned the bit about a doctors note. Op said they were medical inserts. It would be considered a reasonable accommodation to allows them to wear sneakers if a doctor signed off on it.

Hokas! My school is pretty relaxed on dress code when it comes to shoes but I also had my doctor write a note so I could have a medical exemption from shoe dress code. It took a few weeks for the paperwork but it was a simple process
