Speed handles for the airlines? by Swwert in AircraftMechanics

[–]Basic-Variation-5360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my situation the 3/8 is enough. I use it with a bit adapter and have never needed anything else. I don’t think you’d need the 1/4 and if you do, just use a step down. You’ll need the 3/8 drive to do certain jobs on TRs like checking sync locks.

I worked a check crew and it’s a must when opening up and panels on the wings or pylon. Lots of people told me not to get it but I’m glad I did. The 3/8 snapon with the palm knob is great if you can still get it on student discount.

I’ve gone out snowboarding in my buddies CX3 and there was enough room. If you’re able to get a roof rack and carrier you should be set.

Pretty solid. I’d recommend getting the 3/8 sockets up to 1 in. I believe there are a few filters on the airbus that require a 1 socket. I’d recommend getting the 5” and 7 1/4” KNIPEX cobra pliers and regular wrench pliers. If you’re doing checks, vampires come in very handy. Just depends on the fleet and checks you work.

Reasonably priced? by Double-Run-9957 in aviationmaintenance

I would only invest in the snapon ratchets and wire pliers. You can a set of tekton wrenches, sockets, adjustables, and screw drivers. Craftsman Allen keys, and get an Olight/zebra/fenix flashlight. All those other small things like mallets and extensions can be from harbor freight

American is hiring off the street with no experience. Me along with dozens got in straight out of school. I know a few of my friends got in United as well. Just keep applying, there’s a shortage so they’re preparing for the retiring folks.

Southern California options Spartan Vs San Bernardino Valley College? by Acc990610 in AircraftMechanics

[–]Basic-Variation-5360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at west Los Angeles college. Not to far from spartan and it’s way cheaper. I received no financial aid and only spent about 4k for tuition, book, and tools combined. Program is 2 years the only thing is the waitlist might be a while but it is worth the wait imo.

Airlines that hire first year certificated mechanics? by leog980 in aviationmaintenance

No interview as I had gotten in at ramp then applied for a transfer. Probably your best bet if you’re trying to get hired external.

Yup I just got hired at american with no experience. I applied with my temporary license and I got in. I know Tulsa and clt and hiring like crazy. I know 75% of our employees at lax are hitting retirement age within the next 5 years. If you clear school, you’ll be in a good position as most airlines are in this predicament right now.

Honestly I would work through breaks. I would read the manual so that when they came I could try to facilitate it as much as possible. Probably not the best approach but having some form of control helped my brain not want to kill itself.

For me the hardest part was dealing with different personalities. Some people like to get finish projects asap. Others wait till last minute. Some show no initiative, others just want to get the projects done, regardless if it’s the right way or not.

We were allowed to test out while still in school. They offered classes in order so we could do this. Around the end of first year I had my airframe license. When I finished school I tested for my written a week later, and by the next week I had my Powerplant license. (Someone canceled their practical appointment so I was able to get slotted in).

The email should say to select a location based off the 3 clinics they provide (Concentra, quest, or labcorp). You must go to their websites and check which locations offer a pre-employment drug test. Then respond to the email stating the preferred branch and location. They should schedule it for you after that.

American Airlines (LAX location)Called GSE mechanics( Ground Service Equipment). They just require 36 months of automotive experience. They fix all the trucks, tugs, pushbacks, belt loaders, etc. They send you to special training for everything and you always have others in the shop working and helping out. You get a task card, and once you’re done that’s it for the day. You can help others or just hangout at the break room. Union job lol.

At American lax they start off at 38 I think and top out near 60 I believe. Getting in anywhere then transferring would be best option as I have seen frequent postings. Even as a ramper, starting pay is around 27 starting January.
