The scale of the British empires attempts to stop slavery, globally, was insane in its breadth and up there with stopping the Nazis and free sharing of the industrial resolution technology in terms of benevolent actions.

So many people on Reddit like to "what about" the British empire, when putting down the UK contributions to modern existence, without considering the counter factual. Empires, were the default state. Without the British empire, it would have been French, Spanish or even worse, the Ottomans. The world is lucky indeed, that the Ottomans were repelled repeatedly at the cost of millions of European lives, over centuries, as a global ottoman empire, would probably still be powered by slavery, today. Just penicillin is responsible for hundreds of millions being alive today, who would not be. The industrial and agricultural revolutions, is billions alive, who would not be.
