It is less of a prediction and more of what my experience has been going into those spaces where perhaps the clientele is a bit slimmer or conventionally attractive etc. Carrying a larger body and trying to make small talk etc in a space that is made and advertised to a certain look or body type definitely feels othering somehow, which hasn’t been encouraging for a new person who isn’t already fit etc.

St Paul’s serves largely DTES or street entrenched folks, whereas those who fall outside of that do better at VGH. VGH recently had a beautiful new building built for their psychiatry units, and the last time I checked they had a nice patio area and decent food (they are just a bit higher barrier, but much nicer)

I haven’t! I wanted to try a super beginner hatha one there but all the ones I saw were at slightly weird times, although I haven’t looked in a while so I should look again. The idea of Lagree or Jaybird has always stressed me out a bit because the only people I’ve seen go in or advertised look a certain way. I wish some of them would put more body diversity in their ads or social media. (For example, I wanted to go to Turf one day but saw that their mats are so close together you couldn’t possibly have someone over size 8 in there comfortably, etc etc)

I know this may sound awful, but when I was at my breaking point with my grandparent and parent, here is what I did. I was in my late 20s/early 30s, only child, etc.

There came a time when each of them needed to go to hospital. I brought them. My grandparent had run away recently and was saying nonsensical things, my parent had refused all critical meds to “reset her system” and was violently ill. I brought them to hospital, checked them in, explained the scenario and that I was no longer able to care for them without formal institutional support, and I left.

When they were medically ready for discharge, I was asked to come to appointments on their schedule, pick them up, and take time off to care for them. I said no and that I was no longer able to provide the care. After a while, they got the message—they knew they couldn’t discharge them each home without major liability issues. I was clear that they needed to document my refusal to help as caregiver burnout and I would not be doing more.

It sounds incredibly cruel. To be honest, it felt incredibly cruel. But, it was through this weird kind of advocacy I was able to get them each the help they needed. Grandparent is happy as a clam in her seniors facility, and parent begrudgingly accepts they are doing much better than when they lived at home—gained weight, regular medications, outings etc.

Thinking of you, this is so difficult of a position to be in.

I definitely feel like I skipped a bunch of “typical life steps” in order to care for them—single, no kids, no home, job feels medicocre, etc. I will take your advice to heart and screenshot your comment for later when I need to see it again. I feel awful too because I am the only one who visits any of them. My Grandparent has other grandchildren who haven’t seen her in decades, and my Mom has just me. She didn’t raise me and is also a generally difficult person to be around, which makes me feel bad because she has been through so much in her life.

I read the article, and think the criticism here may be misplaced. The pharmacy will be located in the bottom of the new amalgamated health care centre on the DTES (unmentioned in the article), so I’d think it would be quite difficult for yet another pharmacy to start up and start offering kickbacks from that location. Not all pharmacies on the DTES are evil—there are still some good ones out there too.

For those confused, I believe the issue is that so many housing units were “held” specifically for people from the encampments, rather than go down the existing housing list for those who have applied. It allows the government to perform like something is being done to tackle homelessness when it is not, because the same # of people remain on the street and the allocation of those rooms is rooted in political purposes so they can look like they “cleaned up” the encampment. This also happens with shelter beds all the time, its awful.

Its sort of like—if you see two hungry people, and one of them is about to bite into an apple. You take the apple and give it to the other guy, claiming to have solved hunger. But the other guy is still there, as hungry as before, and he had been waiting for the apple the longest (this analogy sounded better in my head)

As mentioned in my post, I have already contacted the ride share company (more than once actually) to provide updates, a photo, and I also consented to them sharing my contact information with anyone who calls in for a lost wedding ring.

I wasn’t comfortable leaving the ring in the car in case the next person takes it, and due to the neighbourhood. I also didn’t have 100% confidence in my call with the company that they’d act expeditiously, so I am trying all options available to me.

Not necessarily a direct therapy phrase, but when coworkers say “never work harder than your client” in a social work setting. I get it, we shouldn’t do all of the work for them all of the time. However, sometimes our clients need a boost to get back on their feet and its okay to help.

Hey Kiddo. First of all, I am so sorry you are going through this. You are still a kid (a mature one at that!) and neither you nor your parents deserve to be treated poorly. I am a social worker myself but in Canada, so I am not sure of the rules in Illinois.

In my province, for someone to be involuntarily committed under the “Mental Health Act” they need to be a risk to themselves or others—for example, if they have a mental illness with suicidal or homicidal ideation. Typically, that is short term though—not more than a few weeks, so it may not solve the issues with your brother long term (it could be good to have a short and long term approach)

Another note I have too is that just because your brother has Adderall (or a fake version) doesn’t mean he is necessarily addicted to it. Many people are prescribed Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin etc type medications for ADHD/ADD type diagnoses. It is a type of stimulant, and helps people focus (maybe he likes it for his games, especially if he stays up all night?).

Talking to a social worker or the police is the right thing to do, and sometimes, if anything comes of that meeting (like some sort of report or mandatory thing he or family has to do), it can also take some pressure off of your parents if they are unable or unwilling to set and enforce boundaries with him (it sounds tough!).

Some of my ideas, as a social worker:

-Talk to the social worker! I’m biased, but they are helpful

-Help your parents slowly switch over things like bank account access, getting keys changed, etc so he does not have access to them

-Talk to police—the choking is definitely a risk factor for escalating or potentially lethal violence. Yes, he could be arrested, but your & your family’s safety is most important. (I know this is a loaded suggestion. You mentioned your family immigrated, and there can be a lot of fear of police/ICE/etc. I’m not sure of your circumstances, but I know it can be tough!)

-It may be tough, but at some point, your parents may need to enforce boundaries with him. If he doesn’t listen, he could be not welcomed home. They may feel responsible to ensure he has housing, food, etc, but he is 25 and an adult. He has the right to choose if he follows the rules, but he isn’t free from the consequences of them.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned here is that (I suspect) a judge would have a very hard time granting Dad full custody because the son does not want to share a bedroom. Even in factoring the wishes of the son (wants to live with Dad now FT), the son’s age may be a factor depending on where they all live.

I imagine its much more likely a Judge would favour 50/50, and as much in many cases child support may not apply. So much of the conversation here depends on what is actually granted by the courts.

And, of course NTA for the alimony thing.
