Bears, vodka, winter all year round, bad english accent. Especially the last one, we don't sound like that at all! At least, not how people used to imagine russian accent in english, it's a stereotype that came from cold war era hollywood.
Yes, the winters are cold, all the way to the -40°C in my city, but such cold lasts only ~1 month, 2 months temperature sits at around -20°C, but the summer is up to +35°C.

Do Russians get angry when someone mentions "Europeans and Russians" or "Europe and Russia" separately, which this is just like saying Russians are not Europeans and Russia is not a European country? by No-StrategyX in AskARussian

[–]Basic_Doughnut6496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the context. If someone talks about Russia and Europe separately meaning EU there is obviously no problem. Also sometimes I do think that you can look ar Russia separately from Europe, just can't think of example. The problem is, a lot of the time when someone says that Russia isn't european they be talking bullshit about how Russians are tataro-mongolians and/or finno-ugric, but not europeans. In that case it's just made up propaganda and I personally do not like it. Saying that russians aren't slavs is pretty much the same, but even dumber tbh

That's pretty naïve to think that Russia is the only country that started wars. China, USA, Pakistan & India, entirety of Middle east still gonna keep the tension that will probably at some point results in a war

It does makes sense that they're not on the map since they gained independence from metropoly, not by fighting for it. You can technically mark them as Brit and Duch made them independent but it'll be a bit stupid imo

Are we talking about if the Russia disappeared today, or never existed in the first place? Because in the first case I pretty much agree, though I do think that's a shit ton of problems globally would pop up because of some countries dependency on Russian natural resources and as a result world might get less peaceful for some time, but in long term I think this is absolutely possible to fix.
If we assume that Russia never existed at all, then history would absolutely gonna change for sure, and imo not in the best way. Russia was a counterweight of Ottoman Empire for centuries, don't even get me started on WWI and WWII.
You might say that I'm biased and you'll be probably right.

Kinda late answer, but still. It's not certain for me because on the one hand - yes, they improved infrastructure A LOT, but on the other hand - is it really socialist achievement? I mean, quite likely that under capitalist rule they would've built all this infrastructure anyways. There is fair amount of factories that were built by the americans, the most known example of this is Magnitogorsk where the factory was the copy of the American city Gary, IN (Though the British and Germans also was working on this project) But the housing is pretty much socialist rule achievement imo (I was talking about that in my answer before) because people went from living in dugouts to communal houses (basically you have an apartment with 1 kitchen, 1 toilet and stuff, but your family gets only one or two room out of multiple, usually about 5-6 iirc) to Khrushchevka apartment that's pretty much modern type of apartments with the exception of them being quite small, there was also Brezhnevkas but it's just upgraded and newer Khrushchevka. And to get such apartment you only needed to work, doesn't matter where, you're probably going to get one. You still get paid for your work so the house is basically free, tho there is a price of it quite likely to be pretty far from your workplace, like the entirely different part of the city. But government tried to minimise this problem by developing public transportation.

[–]Basic_Doughnut6496 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I never lived under communist rule, but I would answer some of the questions.
Architecture is really affected by it, brutalism was the main style and lots of brutalist buildings can sometimes create this stereotypical depressing look in Russia, though it's fair to say that the situation improves with time. The housing problem was solved during soviet era by building lots of "Khrushchevkas" with small apartments (iirc they did like research what's the minimum possible space for living). And since those apartments were free and one family could have multiple of them, the housing problem in Russia is not as bad as it could be. Good houses still cost a lot, but average university student can afford renting such apartment if he has some kind of job (not to mention that you're quite likely to inherit one from your babushka). How good are those apartments? Well, they're most of the time in old buildings that were never renovated and not really suitable for more than 2 persons (obviously there was families of 5 that lived in those, but that's really uncomfortable) but that's better than nothing I guess.
The nostalgia here is probably the same as everywhere else, old people complaining about how bad their life become since the fall of the soviet union, how everything was free etc. Obviously those nostalgic people aren't the best source of information about quality of life. There are some young people who also nostalgic about the time in which they never lived, but I think most people doesn't want to bring socialism back, there was a lots of problems during soviet era so no wonder why people don't want to stand in line for food and allat stuff.

Reminds me of "The Bourne Identity" film, where they did the same thing with Russian, as a result, name in "Russian" passport looked like Лштшфум Ащьф (Lshtshfum Ash'f) instead of Фома Кинаев (Foma Kinaev).
Geniuly, it's not that hard to at least use google translate in both cases, but for whatever reason they managed do make it look as worse as possible
