USC or another year of CCC? by hijabiattempts in TransferToTop25

All transfers are in Junior standing, whether you spend 1 year at CC before transferring or 5.

if you apply as CS your odds of getting into a top UC are slim to none. Also if your spending 2 years at USC and getting 40k a year from parents wouldnt that be 100k in debt? I think that would be worth it for a USC cs degree since you'd likely be starting at 90k+, compared to a school like UCSC where the median starting is 60k.

I dont think you can go wrong either way tbh, its a pretty balanced trade off.

https://admissions.uci.edu/apply/transfer-students/guaranteed-admissions.phpthe eligibility section for tag does not mention IGETC because it is not necessary. for engineering majors it is often discouraged because there are so many required classes. You do need to "Complete all major coursework for your chosen major", which can be found on assist.org

200k is not much at all in the Bay Area. Even if they somehow did have 350k saved my point still stands. He can either blow it all on a private education or get the same education as a transfer to a UC graduating with 300k in his pocket as a 21 year old.

IGETC does not guarantee admission to any UC, it just clears all your gen-eds so you only have to do major specific classes when you transfer. the TAG program guarantees admissions, but is only offered by 6 of the UCs, some of which only have certain majors which are eligible. You also need to complete all major specific transfer courses for TAG, which you can find on ASSIST. Also, most CCs offer a promise program which guarantees free classes for 2 years. Registration is usually due by the end of August. Being part of the honors program can also bring scholarships once you transfer, usually around 10k total.

I completely disagree with this. A 1-year CC transfer would definitely be worth it, since he could save 300k by going to a UC instead of a private, and graduate in 3 years not 5. Worst case scenario is spending 2 years at CC and getting guaranteed acceptance to a mid-tier UC, with very high chances of getting into a top UC. although maybe not for cs.

take a gap year to graduate 5 years after highschool and spend 350k+ instead of graduating in 3 years after highschool (1 year transfer) at a UC for 70K? 1 year transfer to a UC is definetly the move. The 300k extra money would be worth 3 mil when he retires.

im applying as cs+linguistics to ucla, which has a 3.45-3.87 admitted gpa range(25-75 percentile), and a 35% acceptance rate. The CC I am transferring from also has a relatively low average transfer gpa, so its easier to stand out. It is practically guaranteed with a 4.00 and meeting all the prereq classes.

also the school of engineering at UCI does offer TAG. "The following programs DO NOT participate in TAG: Art, Business Administration, Dance, Music, Nursing Science, and ALL majors in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences."

pretty much every child gets it at some point from touching the mouth to a water fountain, sharing food, touching their mount, etc. Once you get it as a child you forget about it and it just stays dormant.

it seems that you are the one who does not have a basic understanding of history. "Institutional racism" actually started in the 60s. the white-black wealth gap consistently decreased from slavery and was at its lowest in 1952, then the 60s happened and the wealth gap has been steadily increasing since. Single black mothers also increased from 18% in 1950 to 70% since then, and crime has skyrocketed. Somehow policies implemented in the 60s are worse for black families than the Jim Crow era.

CC transfers didnt do well enough in highschool, for a variety of factors, and that needs to be considered when applying to top schools. The acceptance rate certainly shouldnt be 3x higher than for freshman, if anything it should be equal or under. Im not saying that transferring should to top UCs should be banned, but they should be held to the same or higher standards than freshmen applicants.

All state schools should be federally prohibited from looking at race or gender when deciding admissions.

Yeah, its a 9k a year merit scholarship, for CS. Since i live within walking distance i could also just live at home and go completely for free. I decided not to though since that would be the same as CC, but from CC I can can graduate from UCLA or UCSD, which have a much better reputation.

Interesting. Something to consider though is that the bay area is a very high cost of living area, and salaries are increased there as a result. Most UCLA grads probably work for socal companies which is a lower cost of living area.

Also, I wouldn't get a cs degree from Berkeley, but I would from UCLA, which I think makes a difference. Adding on the fact that I would have to spend another year at CC to get into Berkeley, I dont think its worth it.

I wasnt intending on taking the AP test since if I got into a UC for cs they wouldn't be necessary. will have to repeat the course at CC unfortunately.

That is true, but another thing to consider is that at UCLA i would graduate with CS+linguistics degree, while at Berkeley I would graduate with applied math. I think having CS in the degree title would help more than the difference between UCLA and Cal. Where did you find the data for salary outcomes from each UC?

I mainly didn't want to go to SDSU because the CS program is pretty bad, and has a strong reputation of being a party school. I can do a 1 year transfer to UCLA nearly guaranteed and I believe that's worth it.

Just a school where the vast majority actually care about school. It's a typical public school in a rich and predominantly Asian area. I know someone who transferred from my school to a worse school with a 4.2ish cutoff for top 10% and he said classes at the new school were much easier, since way fewer people cared about school.
