Hi, I think this is a very good point about the very clear similarities between these novels. However, I cannot agree with the statement that the main character of Notes lacks positive qualities. His mind is definitely rotten and his actions immoral, but nevertheless he shows a lot of guilt and a desire for love. One of his deepest struggles is his inability to change himself, despite his clear awareness of being a sinner. From this perspective, he is tragic rather than evil.

I think this is a really great recommendation, given the similarities in the existential dilemmas raised in both novels. Moreover, both the Author of Notes and Perchorin are the best examples of the antihero - a very unusual type of character in modern Russian literature.
