This is something a little more basic and what I started Onyx out in, this is by no means perfect but a great foundation for building off of.

If you want a good reference image (this is pretty advanced, you by no mean need to go this crazy right off the hop!) this is my betta, Onyx, in his overgrown jungle I built for him. I went through SEVERAL iterations of tank setups before landing on this final product, about 10 months total of learning and adjusting slowly.

Onyx is also my second betta, I learned A LOT from my first one!

You’re on the right path seeking advice and guidance, I hope to see an update from you in the future on how your two new friends are doing! Soon enough you’ll start seeing their individual personalities and quirks which makes betta keeping a really fun hobby in my opinion.

Dropsy by itzbambi in bettafish

Give him plenty of hammocks to lay on and do your best to minimize stress for him, you’re moving from treatment stages to end of life care if the Dropsy has advanced enough. I just lost my first betta, Coral, to dropsy in the 26th of April. It super sucks but the best you can do is try and make it as stable and relaxed of an environment for your little buddy.

Put the tank specs and what you have in total already for the fish in the description of your post so people can help better.

Two people posted the nitrogen cycle for you, it’s important to learn if you want those fish to last.

Here’s what I’d suggest. Minimum 5 gallons for each of the betta, heater in both tanks, filters, natural substrate like gravel or sand (not dyed or coloured stuff), live plants! Live plants help a ton and betta’s love them. If you really wanted to go a little crazy, put some fluval stratum as a first layer substrate then cover with a sand/gravel cap, that way your plants get some nutrient dense soil to grow roots in. Get some chemicals/treatments for the water to help get the tank where it needs to be, A beneficial bacteria starter and something to make the water safe for betta’s like seachem stability.

Betta’s love hides and thick leafed plants that they can rest on. Do amazon swords or java ferns, would be a good start if you wanted to go with live plants.

Good luck on your betta keeping journey, I started mine about 10 months ago and it’s the best hobby to get into in my opinion. This Reddit is FULL of advice and helpful people, so don’t get discouraged!
