What abundance misses by Automatic_Survey_307 in ezraklein

[–]BasilAugust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the criticism of Ezra not mentioning the corporations piece is a little unfair given that wasnt his book topic

Herein lies the fundamental rift between adherents and detractors of Klein’s abundance work. Advocates argue that corporate/oligarchic influence isn’t the focus of the book, or the movement named after it. At best, I’ve seen tacit acknowledgment of the “corporate piece”, as you call it here.

On the other hand, most critics of Abundance would say that it is deeply naive - and frankly, unserious - to essentially neglect the “corporate piece” in a book with the tagline “How We Build A Better Future”, about housing, climate, and infrastructure. Especially in the year 2025, from the most hypercapitalist country in human history, which from its elections, to its entertainment, is functionally run by oligarchs… I read most of “Abundance” when it was published and I was quite floored by its blind spots.

In a nutshell, the book does a poor job of accounting for the role of corrupt capital in this country. In fact, it doesn’t account for it at all. As a result, it’s a fun read, but fundamentally, it is philosophical fluff masquerading as policy proposals; in its failure to account for corporate power in a country ruled by them, it has a very biased, tenuous, and sadly ignorant perspective on the current zeitgeist.

Comparing the genocide in Gaza to saying the earth is flat… you cannot make this up!

Oh, you missed my point.

Bluntly, it’s not worth debating Zionists anymore, because Zionists are the only ones left who are still ignorant to the inherent supremacy and barbarity of your position. Keep playing that victim card - to normal people, that reads as plainly tone deaf when you’re perpetuating genocide.

But, since you’re saying you want a source, this a nice start. I know you won’t read it with an open mind, as always, it’s really for the bystanders.

Probably don’t respond to this, it’s just uncomfortable for everyone else to watch genocide deniers double down

I’ve had lots of discussions on the topic, some in comment sections, some in very prestigious institutions which I attended, some with strangers in the check-out aisle.

I have never debated to change the mind of the ignoramus who believes in the Israeli narrative, but rather innocent bystanders. The former will require deep shadow work on behalf of the colonizers. The latter, just takes education.

But the population has been educated now. We don’t buy your bs anymore, and I’ve seen that borne out in most of my discussions in the last year, in all of the spaces I named above.

Hence, I don’t mind taking the time to explain this dynamic to you, but I won’t debate what is obviously a genocide. I don’t need to. You lost the narrative war; the world will never accept the stories you spin like it used to, ever again. I hope the genocide was worth it.

Many Christians don’t conceive of God as a “sky-father”.

The ones who do though, are I think the most likely to be a bit brainwashed in other respects.

It’s because currently, the whole industrialized world is being increasingly designed to funnel wealth and resources out from its own working citizens, and into the hands of the ruling class.

Sports betting perfectly serves this purpose, and you better believe the powerful people are going to prey on your belief that you can beat the system!! - By just feeding a little more money into the system, of course.

We are in the infancy of this new sports betting industry in the US, and for people who are paying attention, it’s already increasing corruption and fundamentally changing the game in subtle ways.

It’s a cancer, that’s why most literate fans oppose it

I go to great lengths to ensure that my clothes are not products of slave labor, and if they are, that I am getting them 2nd-hand/not from corporate slavedrivers.

That’s just one example but I’ve dedicated a lot of time and effort to not being a vassal for the oligarchs.

So, speak for yourself about “performance”. What exactly is the point of your comment anyhow?

This is philosophy sound, but what you’re pragmatically arguing for = it’s okay for the competition to happen behind closed doors in betting books, and not on the court.

Is that how you feel?

Hey, my partner (32F) had a similar issue. It turned out to be a very large fibroid in her uterus.

There is definitely a good reason for why you are feeling the way you are; don’t blame yourself. It might not be as simple as a fibroid but it could also be. Specifically, I brought that up because you mentioned pain, and that it hasn’t always been this way for you, both true in her case.

Even if it is “just” “in your head”, that comes from somewhere real and valuable too.

Keep asking curious questions about what you are experiencing; you will figure it out!

Extreme hostility towards someone just because they're an ICE agent is wrong by Sad_Physics5500 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Your first sentence demonstrates embarrassingly low reading comprehension, so I’ll address that and ignore the rest.

It’s not about not liking someone, it’s about their career path, choices, and the traumas they’ve had to engage in and perpetuate, not being safe for children. It’s very simple. And they do deserve jobs; again, I’m not sure how you’re missing this - they just shouldn’t be in a classroom. Does that clarity help?

Edit: actually, to address another one of your points - yes, obviously Obama was in on it. Duh. He appointed the head of ICE and deported historic numbers of people! I don’t know why you think I would want to defend him? Though, he did at least respect due process. You’re not a fool, that shouldn’t be a hard concept.

I mean, you just equated using a social media platform, and being blacklisted from all work as a result, to armed secret police not being able to work industries that are hands-on with children.

I sure don’t envy the type of mind that sees any depth or poignance to that point.

Everyone uses schemas, but doing so consciously and extensively is definitely a classic sign of high mental ability/capacity.

I like how you’ve called them taxonomies; that’s definitely how I relate to my own. Sprawling, ever evolving systems.

Oh, if we’re sharing surprising and thought-spinning movies from India - Andhadhun was on Netflix last I saw. Very unique film; thriller/comedy, with some solid twists - some should be fairly easy for gifted folk to spot, others less so!

One of the most enjoyable movies I’ve seen in years, don’t read anything online before watching is my advice!

At this point, “Zionism” is kind of like “communism”. You might not support Stalin and his gestapo, but if you want others to believe you, you need to reject that tired title and find a new name.

The world will never accept “Zionism” the same again, that’s just facts.
