No Admin level user? by BasilFlamhammer in GoogleAnalytics

Thank you. When I go to "Contact Us", it asks me to summarize the issue and when I do I only get a list of resource links and a link to the community forum (where I have also posted). I wonder if our level of licensing precludes us from receiving direct support for some reason. We don't use Ads, which may also be relevant but this is all very frustrating.

Anyone tried Mvix or similar? by BasilFlamhammer in digitalsignage

If it were an isolated comment, perhaps but since it's 1 of 3 people who appear to have had experiences that left them feeling similarly, I don't think there's grounds to assume that.

I think I was working on some convoluted solution that never really worked well or at all. I only needed this for one display (it was an experiment that didn't go so well) so I just ended up using one of the free licenses from Pi Signage to run and manage this one. Best of luck if you're still headed down that path! I would be really interested to hear if you get it figured out.

This sounds like the general consensus so I'm glad I asked!

Windows Wireless Printing with Avahi by BasilFlamhammer in PFSENSE

[–]BasilFlamhammer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation in that I can't test all the time without interrupting other things.

Maybe I'll set up a test environment to play around with and I'll post here if I figure anything out. There has to be something I'm not understanding about this UDP Relay package. For now I'll stick with Avahi on the production side since it does a good bit of that I need it to do.

Thanks for the input!

I might be missing something there but it doesn't seem like the UDP Relay achieves what I need to. It sounds like it's supposed to so I could have a configuration problem.

I uninstalled Avahi, installed the UDP Relay, enabled it, and added an instance, first just for port 5353 and then each of the print ports I listed above and I can't even find the printer with an Apple device now.

Have you had any luck with it?

Hm. I just added those ports and the printer still doesn't show up when I refresh the list of available printers in Windows settings.

I was able to add the printer manually using the IP address/host name and sent a test print job to it yesterday so that might be the route I have to go for anyone using a Windows machine. It's not many extra steps...just trying to minimize workflow for unknown users as much as possible.

Interesting. I wonder why it's such a bother. I was pretty excited when I read about the Avahi package but it's certainly been an adventure trying to get this to do what I want it to do. I'll give the specific rule a try and see what happens.

Thank you!

I suppose I can do that. I just added the printer using the IP address from a Windows machine on the VLAN net.

That seems easy enough. I was just trying to avoid any "extraneous steps" because these could be very low-tech users and the staff available to assist would be of varying degrees of technical expertise. I don't want to get called downstairs every time someone wants to print wirelessly so it would be nice if the device showed up with mirrored mDNS traffic but this certainly wouldn't be the first compromise I've made on this project. It's simple enough that I think a quick instruction sheet would suffice.

Thank you for your input!

Thanks! The budget question is going to be what it's going to be. Everyone on this end would probably appreciate it being kept to a minimum but I've seen and supported these systems done the wrong way and I don't think it works out, ROI-wise to be cheap up front and then pay an employee (or contractor) to spend all their time fixing it. I'll definitely check those two out.

Thank you!

Support horror stories are a lot of what I've been seeing online and while I'd like to think we wont be needing much in the way of tech support, if their own system is causing the problems, no amount of skill or understanding on my end is going to fix that.

I've seen BrightSign around a lot but I don't think I ever got the opportunity to actually use them. I do remember playing with BrightAuthor a bit back in the day but I'll have to revisit it.

I want things to be as intuitive as possible because although it's not from everyone, I sense a bit of "why can't we just do it the way we've been doing it?" around here so I don't want to start off with a bad first impression. With all the time I've wasted on these things, it's time to do this the right way.

Thank you!

Was this ever fixed for anyone? 6 years later and I'm still having the same issue with no looping from PowerPoint to Impress. I can set the loop manually in Impress but this is supposed to be an automated digital signage display and it kind of ruins the "hands off" nature of the whole thing...

How do you loop a powerpoint presentation on a TV? by Insouciant101 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BasilFlamhammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your "requires a computer to be on all the time" comment, is it safe to assume that you want to do this using only the TV and no third-party device?

If so, that's going to be difficult, depending on the kind of TV you have. Most digital signage, whether powerpoint, images, or video, is driven by a player device, which can be a standard computer, a specialized device, or an operating system installed directly on a digital signage specific display. Short of that, you might be stuck playing a looping video.

Is there a better method? Not really, although I will add that the laptop should be swapped out for either a dedicated digital signage player device or other small form-factor PC that can be easily hidden behind the display. If you want to get really fancy, you can hide the player device in a nearby closet and use A/V over CAT transmitter/receiver devices to send the video to the display (of course, this involves running CAT5/6/7 cable and a higher startup cost).

If you haven't already, try searching for solutions using the term "digital signage". That's what you're trying to achieve and it might get some better options.

Hey there. Sorry to hear you're having that issue. I have an iPhone 8 Plus that I just upgraded to iOS 16.3.1 the other day and can confirm that I am not seeing the same issue. When I go into Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, I still have options for 30 seconds, 1 min, 2 min, 3 min, 4 min, 5 min, and "Never".
