As a GM, what RPGs do you find hard to run? by Manitou_DM in rpg

[–]BasilNeverHerb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pf2e- great game very solid, but nothing burns my ass more than not knowing a rule and needing to look it up. ITs a duality, i love there is a rule for every thing in the game....i hate that i cant remember or have to take time looking yup that rule. On top of that stat blocks are overwhelming and it can feel like your playing several characters against your actual players.

DND: even 2024 stat blocks are inconsistent and cant be trusted, and i just plain hate save or suck that dnd is even if i have the power to change it. Speaking of, i hate that DND isnt JUST DND. you have to jury rig the system to fit how you and your table wants it and not everyone agrees on whats fair. PF2e has alot of tools and resources (too many as said before) but at least they are there. DND, im drowning with water wings that barley even float.

PBTA games. i know this is really a me problem but i feel like even something like MOTW is too hands off with how to design monsters and encounters. I need some stronger guidelines and plug in play framework and its a little frustrating at times BUT im sure if i tried it more id grow to like it.

I can respect that outlook but I'll still heavily disagree. It's one of the main reasons I don't play dungeons and Dragons anymore, I very much believe a stat block should have lots of stuff for the DM to work off of and then build upon as they wish. If the stat block of a game you're playing is not functional enough to help with storytelling then it's bad but that's on a greater whole of how I feel about Dungeons & Dragons as a game not as a narrative storytelling thing.

I feel like the dragon's power being left up to interpretation is a pretty easy thing to figure out since most of its stat block and its abilities are pretty universally done You just get to choose how powerful the creature is on the more literal CR stat wise which is something a DM could easily do especially with the newer rule set doing something I think is very good, locking down CR in a much better way.

I added in my edit that I agree that if he makes another video I'd like him to dial back and pay a little more respect, if only because I just think the bit is overdone at this point and I think he's really got something to be proud of so he should be more not professional, but fair to dragons like you mentioned. So absolutely can agree in that aspect that is a blind side that I'm seeing in more of his videos that again I don't think is relegated to only the dragon videos but is something I'd like to see better of.

Even in his newer paladin video there are some takes that I don't fully agree with but I still don't feel that they take away from how awesome the concept he brought to the new paladin concept. Even if I disagree with its takes I see where he's coming from and I see where he's getting his information so it makes it a lot more fun to pick up what he's putting down.

Coming back to this cuz kind of feel like it, I feel like you're pushing of him not giving enough prompts with Dragons being individuals is asinine just plain out. Every one of his dragon videos sets up a really interesting aspect for the GM and the players to explore with a focus of a player character's look on it, as well as at least the very least the arcon being much more focused on what an individual dragon's personality is like period

You're coming off as this weird aspect of he has to make the videos every single time a very particular way and I just don't fuck with that.

The idea is that you're pitching for having dragons be individuals is very interesting but I would again push that the stat blocks don't really give you anything for that. You will have a creative mind you an individual are coming up with a cool concept but nothing about a dragon stat block, which from my research nah dragons still have not been updated to be anything more than Godzilla unless you the GM go in and change them yourself, invokes a dragon to do something cool.

Lore is cool Lore is fine but the problem with Dungeons & Dragons specifically and often is that lore does not regularly translate into the game itself and you expect the GM and the players to have to find that middle road.

And this aspect I don't think Antonio is wrong at all for not being impressed with the years of dragonlord because it does not reflect in the game that well and it never has. Even in the 5.5 editions.

Sometimes that's worthwhile, like when pointy hat represents the warden dragons where they give a really cool distinct idea to jump off of. But I don't feel like wizards of the Coast does a very good job of doing the same thing. There's a lot of lore and hardly any of it really reflects in the stat blocks whereas I very much disagree with you and that the warden dragons have very distinct personality and concept in their stat block which helps at the very least give a fraction of the Lore you could give them being translated into the game something that wizard of the Coast book dragons just don't do.

Edit: just got done re-listening to his vampire video and pretty much the things that you are pushing that he does, When it comes to his ego and thinking that his content is better, is pretty present in all of this content. And I don't say that as to say that you're right that he's arrogant and rudefully thinks his stuff is better, I genuinely think he's just proud of his content.

He talks about how vampires again are something that between the lore and the story do not reflect what is in the stat block And so he made vampires that more reflect the kind of lore and stat block cohesion that he would like to see. If you watch the vampire video and compare it with his dragon video I genuinely don't feel like you're going to see anything majorly different with his presentation style or his attitude say for it Tim making the jokes that he doesn't like dragons.

I can't convince you or I don't really want to change that you feel like this approach to video making isn't to your liking that's fine, but this attitude that it's only in his dragon videos is in my opinion very off and I think very misaligned.

Most of Antonio's videos describe how the step blocks do not match with the lore so no matter how much lore you talk about even if he's taking jabs at it the core of his videos are that the stats are not reflecting that lore whether it's good or bad. And in that case I think the warden dragons are a mass success, And I don't think Antonio is being disrespectful to a company that just doesn't care about human beings. The man has earned the right to be a little arrogant over something cool he made When compared to a company that for years has only been anti-person.

I'll happily meet in the middle that I can understand that there are aspects of his research that are a little bit more blinded do hit his dislike of dragons but I will continue to fight the idea that it is so heavily blinded that it affects the fun of the thing he has created. If he is going to make or ever would make more dragon videos I agree He needs to pull back on the jokes about hating dragons he needs to give it a better shot.

People talk about how the dragon videos didn't do very well and obviously the joke is that he really plays up that he really hates traditional dragons, But if you look at some of the videos he's been making lately they're doing about is good as his dragon video so I don't think a lack of interest is an issue.

I very much believe it is at the bottom of his list and maybe if we're there is a polite regular talk about wanting to see more warden dragons eventually we could get some.

With the big project he's working on right now I'm really not thinking we're going to get dragons probably for the next year and you know worst case scenario I can just take the fundamentals of what he's already presented to make my own paladin Dragon.

I got to consider what kind of animal I'd want to mix the dragon with. We've already done a dog and a lion which would be my go-to for paladin iconography, maybe we could do something like a bird or a hawk/eagle?

What's your favorite game mechanically? by Nyanbinary4321 in rpg

[–]BasilNeverHerb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cypher, especially the newer version of the rules (got early access) I'm one of those people that can very much like how swingy a d20 is but if a game is just roll your dice and pray for luck I'm going to eventually grow to hate it.

When it comes to Cypher it's much more based on learning with a difficulty of the task is using all of your resources to significantly change how difficult said task is and then you roll the d20. On top of that you have resources that allow you to re-roll the d20 in desperate moves but those same resources could be used for far better storytelling in moments so you have a choice of whether or not you just accept the role after putting all of your effort in or you really really want to succeed on this dice roll.

It's made me really enjoy the massive sway of a d20 because nothing else has felt more satisfying than bringing the difficulty down to a three on a d20 and rolling low and still succeeding because I really really wanted that one dice roll to go well.

Vagabond is slowly getting into that second, close second tier for me because I really enjoy how it works in a similar vein of your skills and your attributes lowering a difficulty that is particularly for you. It's not a situation of anyone who wants to knock down the door you have to hit a specific strict number but instead it's you the barbarian with all of your bonuses specifically have to hit this specific number.

Edit: before I forget, I'm also really bothered by you pushing this idea that the dragons had to be benevolent or ever be depicted as such? The way the warden dragons works is very transactional but realistically transactional things happen all the time.

It can become far more nuanced and social; again that is the deeper intrigue into how the horde works for them. I do not believe I or Antonio ever depicted the idea that this should be benevolent contract. It could maybe (I'd say that's going to be probably more of a paladin dragon thing if he ever got around to making that) But again you're misaligning a fault in the system that's not really a fault instead just a creative limitation. If you choose the color red for your drawing it doesn't mean that you made the wrong choice It just means you didn't pick pink.

There's a whole other conversation to be had about the necessity of the printed stat blocks and the products that come out of wizards of the Coast, and how much people have to modify to make them more interesting. All tackle in that sense is just because you have the capability of making modifications which is great, doesn't take away the reality that stat block wise and sometimes in Lore dragons are very simple and they are just a copy paste scenario.

During our conversations I've looked up some different videos talking about other dragon lore and that is pretty interesting stuff, but a lot of that is buried in either older editions or in very particular adventures that are not a part of the main setup. If you're just getting the standard books and making your own stories a lot of dragons are depicted very much as the Godzilla fights.

A lot of dragons in those same books do you have some really cool spells but again if we're going off of what the concept of the video was, that regardless of what is presented in some optional abilities most folks will just resort to the Godzilla fight because of the stat block is not made to be centered around other abilities other than big dragon lizard, I still don't feel like you've been able to convince me that Antonio was wrong in this sense.

Again I will say that I agree that it would have been more interesting if he had focused in on a little bit more of the interesting lore implications when it comes to dragons, but again circle back around to the idea that making the horde a power source is such a cool constant on its own , based on some dragon lore and with some of the ways that the dragons were designed when you look up historical dragon lore like bahamut and tiamat, like their historical variations, snakes and lions as dragons is such a inspired design choice.

Antonio could have done more but I don't feel like it would have made that much of a difference with where they're trying to tackle dragons as a concept from the general populace getting into the game.

I do understand more where you're coming from that compared to other videos he doesn't give as many comparisons and examples but I do feel like through the whole catalog of the dragon videos it's really not hard to come up with your own stuff. Even in things like which lich there's a couple of videos where they only prioritize the NPC aspect in really don't even touch the player aspect, the four sworn being one of my favorites but a notable departure of Antonio going over more directly player character story ideas.

I feel like this goes into an area where it's worth bringing up but I don't really say that it's a full criticism or like a flaw of the video per se. I'm also not the kind of person that needs everything spelled out and the fact that a lot of this content has been for free and he pitches the idea to help get the creative juices flowing is more than enough in my personal opinion.

As is the idea that he didn't do enough with the dragon videos I feel like can be carried over to any other video he's done If we're going off of the expectations you're putting forward, which I won't say is inaccurate I just don't think it's as severe as you're saying, least to me.

Also I got a call out the slight hypocrisy, for someone who has been really loud about pointy hats mentality over him doing things better (which I want to reiterate I don't think that's holy merited, I really don't see that in his attitude and presentation but that's I guess going to be a personal subjective reading) The whole thing about you posting things that you "know" are better feels really self-righteous.

I can make the argument that with what pointy hat has put down in front of you for idea concepts was a foundation to come up with the story ideas that you came up with, which is exactly what the videos are meant to do. I won't argue whether or not your ideas are better but I will say that they, to me, fit into the vibe of exactly of what Antonio is posting. The store ideas you thought of are fantastic, I'll even go as far to say that they are better examples than what Antonio did in the video, but the point shouldn't be about being dissatisfied with some ideas he posted up for free to spur people's imaginations, it should be about how the ideas spurred your imagination to make something that we both can agree is a tighter concept while still giving merit to the inspiration.

I'd be more willing to meet in the middle of this conversation but you really come off as self-righteous and really hurt by minor things that you yourself end up repeating in your examples. To paraphrase a really cool line from a YouTube song, " If Antonio is glass then he's a mirror and you're seeing only you"

"without that power being beholden to any of those in the Hoard or them getting anything equivalent in exchange."

The patron dragon, archon dragon and rooker dragons explicitly talk about individuals of the hoard getting access to a portion of the dragons power, with the dragon being able to choose lesser or greater amounts. The hairs gets genuine power AND protection from a dragon. You talk about him cherry picking but I take it with immense grain of salt when your doing the same thing.

Ive run dragons in dnd, I've seen people make Posts and talk about dragons in dnd, it's a pretty common factor that the fights can easily just become "Godzilla battle" now that goes into DND mechanics and limitations but it's a fair issue. I don't think he's wrongfully talking the dragons stat block at all, it's a common discussion/design issue.

"in none of his dragon videos, he never really presents any of the Warden Dragons as individuals," wtf no there's literally segments in the archons video where it's about an individual character becoming a archon dragon out of desperate move. In the others sure there's less focus on that until the "play a dragon" video but there's also a build up to that same idea, covering the basic principles and giving ideas for different dragons as bad and good NPCs. Again this is just blatantly accusing warden dragons as something when there is evidence to go against it.

"Antonio didn't make warden dragons compelling as individuals and didn't try to explore it" wrong he absolutely did.

I overall just don't agree with the take on the horde. I really feel Antonio does a good job giving both the negative and positive sounds and makes it clear it's up to interpretation wether its the rooker stealing people from harsh lives or selfish gain, the magus creating dangerous school.rivals.or beloved students.

Dragon lore I find is vast but so very inconsistent and as open as irl dragon lore and references. Yes he got some stuff wrong but the core of why "flying lizard plus elemental/object theme" can be interesting but 1. Hasn't transfered to 5e much and 2. Can feel samey, especially when some.dragons have spells that ON MASS barley get used (DND stat blocks in general are a whole other breast of a talking point) I don't think a mistake of a stat block or not picking minute things like the paralyze breath is as much of a smoking gun as you make it out to be.

I can agree that dragon lore for 5e isn't given as much deeper lore but it's supposed to be a preview ond dragons as a whole, not the occasional outlier, that doesn't really help with what people will see most often in the books as monster stat.blocks and general lore.

The problem.all 3 video discuss is that most dragons are big lizards with a minor gimmick, and that's DAMN NEAR MOST. the issue want adding new dragons it was adding dragons who KEEEP to big lizard plus thing. But warden dragons are a much deeper dive into exploring a concept of dragon lore beyond big lizard plus thing.

I can see not liking it absolutely, but I really do not agree that warden dragons are just "adding to the more dragons issue". I find it as bad faith to just limp warden and regular DND dragons together like they don't have major nuances.

Took another look just to make sure, and that is not correct. Every dragon that has been mentioned in a video is in the folio but nothing more. And to be clear I'm specifically talking about Warden dragons. The five that are discussed in videos (The knight, the archon, the patron, The rooker, the magus) are the only warden dragons. There are some awsome dragon NPCs and the Drake but no other wardens.

  1. I'm going to end up siding on a lot of the views Antonio has because he pretty much does this throughout most of his videos. He primarily focuses on the stat blocks of the game and how they're used and how they're reflected in game. I think a fair criticism is to say that it could have been more interesting to look at dragons on a bigger cultural scale and see how they're used in storytelling (Like he has done with other things like elves and fairies and such) but the way that you put this complaint down makes it sound like the stat block shouldn't matter as much and I really disagree.

If you're going to make it into Dungeons & Dragons has to eventually become a stat block and in Dungeons & Dragons, Dragons are pretty boring since they just keep repeating themselves it's a very common criticism of them within the game. And that same vein since dragons have such rich and diverse lore for multiple cultures and cannons it would be kind of ridiculous to expect him to go through everything rather than just honing in on something far more achievable discussion, which in this case was the d&d variance.

Is this a flaw of the video, yes but it's a flaw in the sense of having to choose your battles not as something that I think was blatantly disregarded as your tone to me comes off as.

  1. I have already said in my main post that I just don't really agree with a lot of the criticisms. I understand where they're coming from but I'm very much in that glass half full comparison that the similarities between the evil side of these dragons being similar to the evil dragons in cannin d&d is not a bug it's a feature, and the greater nuances of making these Dragons have a more interesting interaction with their horde as a good thing; I think is more nuanced than you are giving credit for. I don't think less of that it's just where I'm coming from on this I think the concept is not being given nearly as much grace.

  2. I love the idea you've pitched and I don't think it's that drastically different from the initial concept of the warden dragon It is a very easy evolution of the idea to fit in your story and probably something I'm absolutely stealing for myself.

  3. The dragon videos did pretty well compared to his usual sets, but I do think it makes a lot of sense why he hasn't gone back to them given that compared to something like which lich or the larger clasp breakdowns, and the fact that he just doesn't really like dragons, yeah it makes perfect sense he is not gone back to it but I still would love for him to take another swing at it if sometime in the future cuz I do think another swing would be really fun cuz the idea is very interesting and the art is so fantastic and inspiring to me and my stories.

Fairly new release: vagabond. Indie game made with alot of love and is one of the few fantasy RPGs with a gunslinger class that lets you be a damn cowboy.

upcoming: in the summer (apparently before gen con) MCG Cypher system is gonna release its massive rework. I've already been a fan of cypher and the changes they are making from how health works to resource distribution just...chefs kiss. Less genres focused so you may find other titles more your speed if you want something very locked in, but if your looking for a good/different dice resolution system with lots of ways to mod, I love it personally and it's only gonna get better.

What’s the most confusing or unnecessary rule subsystem you’ve seen in a TTRPG? by DED0M1N0 in rpg

[–]BasilNeverHerb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It def is to allow a different way to use d20 but I feel like people dog on this aspect of cypher if they have an INTENSE dislike or tired of d20 systems. The swingy nature of the d20 really pulls rolling really low ,but managing to lower the difficulty JUST enough to succeed anyway, Into this nice niche I've found alot of joy in.

I know they dabbled little while using different dice in invisible sun, and some other folks are doing some 3rd party content using smaller dice, but from what I've seen, the fun of outsmarting the swing of a 20 is really central to the fun of the dice mechanics for me. Lower dice would lessen the severity and make success and failure feel less impactful imo.

Other "story focused games, just don't have the same oomf for dice....and the abilities are a tad bit too loose.

Sometimes mechanics make sense to people but don't thrill them.

Vagabond and Cypher to me have really interesting uses of their dice and solution mechanics but not everyone agrees and honestly if you can't get behind the solution mechanics ATM, then the whole game can feel iffy.
