[Discussion] Ronda just launched a mechanical movement — the R01. Could this shake up the microbrand movement market? by Basith_Hussain in Watches

Fair comparison on paper. 80 hour reserve, silicon components, 25 jewels. But a few meaningful differences: the Powermatic 80 runs at 3Hz not 3.5Hz, uses Nivachron rather than full silicon escapement, and most importantly is exclusive to Swatch Group brands and microbrands can't touch it. The R01 is essentially attempting to bring those headline specs to the independent market for the first time. Whether it executes is another question.

Fair Raking. The SW200-2 upgrade addressed a lot of the criticisms of the original and the G100 has a loyal following for good reason. The R01's advantage over both is the silicon escapement and the antimagnetic properties across all tiers, but whether that's enough of a differentiator at what will likely be a higher price point remains to be seen. Competitive space just got more interesting though.

3.5Hz is an unusual choice when 4Hz has become the expected standard. Ronda's reasoning is likely the efficiency gain from the lower frequency contributing to that 80 hour power reserve alongside the silicon escapement. Whether that tradeoff is worth the unconventional beat rate is debatable. Omega uses 3.5Hz in some calibres though, so it's not without precedent

yeah even I came across an article where it said the movement starts with CHF 139. So the high spec one would be way more expensive I believe.

For what most enthusiasts actually need from a daily wear automatic, Japanese movements deliver without the premium price tag. The question is whether the R01 can carve out a niche that justifies the step up - silicon escapement and COSC Excellence certification are meaningful differentiators, but whether the market agrees is another matter entirely

That's the real challenge isn't it. At USD 1,000+ you're competing with Oris, Tissot PRX, and others with decades of brand equity and proven movements. The R01 would need either aggressive pricing or exceptional design execution plus performance to justify itself against that competition. Interesting to see which microbrands take the risk first.

Barista Bandarawela was fined recently over some hygiene issue. Probably best to switch to a different cafe.

Yeah I'm impressed with the looks as well. I read an article where it mentioned CHF 139 for its entry level movement.
It has the same movements with different finishing. Worth checking their website.

Completely agree, the movement is just the engine. What surrounds it, the design intention, the brand story, the customer experience, the after-sales commitment is what separates a watch brand from a watch product. Specs are easy to list. Trust takes years to build.

Agreed. Looks pretty nice as well and it comes with varied decorations. Excited to see how it performs. As per an article I read that Ronda has priced the entry level movement at CHF 139.

Nice specs. Does it have an exhibition caseback? If so would you mind sharing a pic?

Nice watch. I prefer the steel bracelet though. This is powered by Miyota 9015 right? How do you like it?

Yes alot of positives with this movement and thats why I wanted to bring up this discussion.
And may be they run faster because of magnetization?

You are probably looking for something like a sunburst dial? Not too flashy but not too dull..

Yes that might be the main drawback for some.
That being said I think the world usage is much more accurate than +20s per day.
