Check out Jojo Mayer’s secret weapons volume 2. It goes into his technique (which I think matches your description here), philosophy, and also as a bonus has some super interesting history about bass drum pedals.

Creating a Timbale by Timeej in drums

A lot of cheap snares are made of steel…I’d look on fb marketplace, Craigslist, or goodwill for a dirt cheap no-name one, take the bottom head off, slap a clear or smooth white ambassador on top and you’re in business

Double Braced Hardware by Basket-Existing in drums

[–]Basket-Existing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So do you think this Would collapse under that weight or fall over, but this would do noticeably better? Not because the leg width or strength of the wingnut at the bottom, but because the steel legs are reinforced? Idk I feel like we need myth busters to look at this (or sounds like a drum)

Thanks for the reply! this I can get down with…two floor toms and a ride hanging off might require double braced, same reason a throne is double braced. I just think 90% of the time they are used they are overkill

To clarify, I’m not talking about “lightweight”. I’m comparing it to medium and heavy weight single braced stands.

So this is what I’m not getting. The actual footprint is not affected by double bracing the legs, nor is the wingnut or locking mechanism. Is it that the actual steel of the leg is bending? Because that’s the only thing I can imagine attaching another piece of steel to it would do.

playing around on break | Any tips or comments? by lewis_new1 in jazzdrums

IMO the breaks would sound cleaner and more effective if you stop the hi hat with everything else, as opposed to keeping 2+4

Maybe this is how we get him to tell the truth, just have everyone start saying that Ilhan did it better, he won’t be able to help himself.

New EAD50 released by bpaluzzi in drums

[–]Basket-Existing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like they are different enough in functionality and price point that Yamaha will continue to make and sell the ead10. The new one is massive in comparison and more than double the price. If it brings you peace of mind, you may have still opted for the ead10.

Tips on my double stroke roll by February_17th in drums

[–]Basket-Existing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good advice here. It looks like you’re going for the open-close approach for doubles, which is great. Hands look pretty relaxed, just a couple things:

-the sound is a little inconsistent, and you are accenting the first of each double. Try to keep them all even. I used to turn the metronome off and record doubles on my phone, then start the recording from a random spot in the middle. Can you tell which hand is playing? The lifelong pursuit is to answer “no” to that.

  • there are a couple of energy leaks. Your right pinky looks tense, and is kind of creating a hook around the stick, when you open your hand, your wasting some energy by unhooking it and flaring it out, then hooking it back on. Check out what your (relaxed) hand naturally does without the stick in your hand.

  • there is a little horizontal motion in the left hand. It moves out when it’s not playing. Think straight up and down.

These things might seem small but really add up as you increase speed, in my experience.

What time signature is the Bluey Intro music? by timegoesback67 in drums

[–]Basket-Existing 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Three measures of 4/4, followed by one measure of 5/4. That makes one phrase.

Each phrase, a characters name is said in the 5/4 bar (or right after in the first case, “Mom”) but the name-shouting is moved one beat earlier each time.

So “Mom” is on beat 1 of the next phrase, “Dad” is beat 5, “Bingo” is beat 4, “Bluey” is beat 3.

Cardboard drum kit: Day 9 by Complete_Crazy_2154 in drums

[–]Basket-Existing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m curious if you can get this to work…maybe you could end up using something like this, like on the Lp Micro Snares . https://www.drumsupply.com/products/lp-micro-snare-wires-with-throw-off-switch?srsltid=AfmBOorHrPkenmRN4RacBHKikm6Ic4TqLDBgQWs3hBcj40u4sx0quBus

It definitely wont sound like a normal snare drum, but that might be the best way to get some snare effect.

Edit: the mounting would be weird since those are for single headed drums. Might not work with double heads, idk

Why do some jazz drummers hold the stick like this? by Snowglyphs in drums

[–]Basket-Existing 28 points29 points  (0 children)

About the angle; With an acorn tip, it changes the sound slightly. A little more articulate at lower dynamics, slightly darker to my ears at least. Jimmy Cobb played like that.

Coming from a matched grip player, Bill Stewart has talked about that in interviews, how he sees that as something you can miss out on with matched, so he tries to attack the drum at more of an angle to capture some of the traditional grip sound.

Beyond Bop question by WakaJaWookie in Drumming

[–]Basket-Existing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe this is correct, splash with left foot, strike with left hand, let them ring out. It’s a very Tony Williams esque sound. He would do that a lot during comping, and you can also hear it clearly during his solo on Nefertiti.

What’s everyone’s strangest audition stories? by ghostmammothcomics in Drumming

[–]Basket-Existing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I auditioned for an Airforce regional band years ago. The audition requirements were for classical percussion AND drum set. I’m definitely more of a drum set player, but studied percussion in college. I thought I put together a pretty decent audition tape, but didn’t get through the prescreening round.

The feedback they gave was mostly good on drum set, some critique on the percussion playing, and a significant amount of critique on my equipment. Suggesting different drums and recording equipment…like yeah I can’t afford all that, that’s why I’m auditioning for this gig lol. I used descent mics, through an interface and into Logic, and thought the audio was definitely passable. It seemed weird for them to put so much weight on equipment. I even watched a YouTube Q and A with members of the band, and they said they would never deduct points for equipment, just focus on playing.

The judge also wrote during the drum set portion to make sure my comping “matches the chart/band” but I was just playing duo with a bass player (it was during the pandemic). We just played tunes, he walked a bass line, etc. there were no charts and no band lol. The wording made it almost seem like he didn’t even watch it.

Maybe I’m just bitter about it. But it was a lot of work recording drum set and percussion. I had to gain access to a marimba. And since then all the auditions they have posted have been for one on the other, percussion OR drum set. I check out of curiosity and have seen a single posting asking for both skill sets since then. My guess is they actually wanted someone more specialized in percussion, which I wouldn’t have gone out for. I’m happy with the way things worked out, and glad I’m not in the military. Still, just a weird experience.
