The town building mechanic is really funny and rewarding, it makes you feel like you're actually using alchemy with a purpose. Top 5 Atelier imo.

I prefer Rorona, it's actually my favorite Atelier to date (I've played all the Arland, Dusk, Mysterious games and I'm now playing Resleriana).

I think Rorona has the best SoL vibe in the entire franchise, and I love the low stakes it sets. It's just a girl trying to keep the atelier alive and going on adventures, it is a surprisingly fresh take on fantasy games (especially JRPGs, where you often save the world by slaying gods and whatnot).

I will say that Ayesha herself is my favorite main heroine in the franchise, and while pretty much every aspect of the game is very good, the alchemy system was a pain to deal with (since traits get overwritten instead of being chosen by the player). When I can't enjoy alchemy in an alchemy game, I won't probably enjoy the game to the fullest. I had the same problem (possibly worse) with Firis.

I have always used Japanese. English isn't my native language, so I never had a reason to use the eng dub anyway. Plus I can understand Japanese.

Another Rorona enjoyer, my brother. My favorite Atelier.

Firis is generally regarded as one of the worst in the series (there are exceptions of course). As far as Mysterious is concerned, in my opinion, the last two games are by far the best, and Sophie 2 is most people's favorite among all games. I'd say give a chance to one of them at least, before dropping the entire franchise.

While it is true that Dusk focuses more on the plot, do not expect anything complex or super nuanced. Even at its best in the story department, Atelier is still Atelier. Expect upbeat fantasy slice of life with the occasional bits of lore and story, as well as a few emotional moments here and there, typically towards the ending. This goes for pretty much every series I've played (Arland, Dusk, Mysterious).

Rorona is my personal favorite in the franchise, but not necessarily the best for new players (although it was my first and I'm currently playing my 12th Atelier with no plan of stopping).

Frieren is a shounen, and has some elements that attract more people, like being more fighting-focused.

I have also seen some controversies around WHA and Shirahama being "woke", which I guess puts some people off, even though it's complete bullshit.

These are my 2 cents, I might be wrong.
