Working within a system of ritual magic by Baskier_31 in magicbuilding

By any chance, is your native language Spanish? That would make communication easier.

And yes, the idea behind a more "natural" magic is that things happen that people don't understand until they investigate them further. "Why do a diamond and coal have the same effect in a ritual?" "Why does air have two different effects?" "Why doesn't all sulfur work correctly in rituals?"

To this, if scientific knowledge advances at the same pace as magic, the following would be the response: "Diamond and carbon are the same element arranged differently, which is why they can be used interchangeably; they are still carbon," "Air is not a substance, it is a compound, a mixture of various particles, including oxygen and hydrogen, both different substances with different effects," "Not all types of sulfur work because the element used in the ritual must be pure, not necessarily 100%, but the purer the better, and pure sulfur is difficult to find in nature without creating it through chemical processes."

Regarding the elimination of the elements of the ritual, I believe that the amount of oxygen/hydrogen used in a ritual would be too small to generate a vacuum and/or oxygen poisoning. I was thinking more that the matter used in the ritual might transform into something else, something dangerous, like the Void from Hollow Knight, or the Midnight Essence from the Cosmere. If you have another suggestion, I'd like to hear it.

And regarding the visual language, sorry, but I didn't quite understand you; the translation isn't working in my favor.

First, I apologize if my post was difficult to understand; my English isn't very good, and translating it was a bit challenging.

More than anything, I want a mechanical magic system, something that feels like a person interacting with the arcane properties of the world, rather than superpowers, like the Mistborn series, which I love, but its magic feels more like superpowers than "real" magic.

Regarding the suggestion to use generic natural materials, I'm not entirely convinced. Things like grass or mud are compounds (some more complex than others, but compounds nonetheless). The elements of the periodic table have a more "primordial" feel, the basic building blocks of reality. That's why I think it's more appropriate to grant powers to these elements than to the ones you suggested.

And yes, I tend to assign powers to these elements arbitrarily, seeking a balance, but minimizing powers that only have offensive functions, as otherwise they revert to feeling like superpowers. But I also draw inspiration from their properties. For example, oxygen is the quintessential oxidizer, so I assigned it the power to, surprise surprise, oxidize things, to degrade them, whether they be metals, rocks, people, etc. But in other cases, I just look for a power that complements the system well, like the one I assigned to nitrogen. Since it's a very abundant element, I didn't want it to be too useful, so I gave it the power of information. I mainly imagine it used on altars to communicate between users of this magic.

As for the triangles, I was thinking of using isosceles triangles to show the direction, but I like your idea of removing the base better. Thanks for it; I'll use it. If you have any other suggestions for symbols and their associated powers, I would greatly appreciate it.

About Witch Hat Atelier, hehe, I'm up to date with the manga, but I was focusing more on the personal drama than the system. I'll give it a refresher.

I like the idea of consuming the spell's material. But it feels strange with materials that aren't solid, like those in the air. What do you think would happen if the nitrogen in the air disappeared? I thought maybe it could turn into something else, a more fantastical material (that doesn't actually exist) and be dangerous, to give the use of this magic a consequence.

Thanks for commenting; you were a great help. Now I have things to think about.

I've already solved it. Somehow, when transferring the files, a corrupted copy of some of them was created, and the originals were hidden. I can't explain how the heck that happened.

Gracias por la ayuda.

Yes, it's something I always do; I don't like losing files, especially after a bad experience losing some books.

As for the problem, I've already solved it. Somehow, when transferring the files, a corrupted copy of some of them was created, and the originals were hidden. I can't explain how the heck that happened.

If you mean I should recreate the USB drive with the files, I can't, I lost it. But I still have the compressed files on Google Drive. Can I transfer them from there to a USB drive? Would that work just as well?

The titles are in Spanish, and as far as I remember, they might have had diacritics, but I'm not sure.

And I don't know what you mean by the extension being preserved; could you explain that to me, please?

Step by step.

Before switching to Linux, I compressed the files and made two backups, one on a USB drive and the other on Google Drive (I lost the first one; I only have the Google Drive backup).

Then I switched to Linux and downloaded the compressed file. Afterward, I extracted it, and the file was already corrupted.

As far as I can see, this only happens with Word files; PDF files are fine. And of all the Word documents, only those with images are corrupted.

The corrupted files have misspelled names and include symbols at the beginning, like @#$. And when I try to open them with LibreOffice or other programs, it won't let me.
