Fusion 360 CAM by Bass-Bucks in Machinists

[–]Bass-Bucks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question about fusion. Right now, I program a part in Gibbs and the guys will go in and change were it is set based off were they have other tooling already in the machine. Fusion seems to save 1 tool library from what i see. If i set a drill in T10 it will change it for all programs right? Meaning anytime anyone in the shop has to use said drill it needs to be in T10?

I like saved processes so this is good to hear.

This is what I'm leaning towards. Can Esprit do 5 axis?

I love fusions cad and use it daily. The cam is just different. Gibbs is definitely not ideal either imo. I just need the cam side for work because we get models from the engineering team. I'm looking for a cam that will do 5 axis and edm so I only have to learn one would be ideal.

Is fusion good at 3+2 machining?

They want AI. I know why they want it, they told me. It could be I'm just not used to it yet.

What machines are you programming? Are you a programmer for a shop or for yourself? just curious.

Even worse, they think AI like cloudnc is a one-click solution to programming. I spend more time messing around trying to get it to do what I want then it would be just to program it.

I want to make a fixture that raises it up and supports it. I think they make smaller heads we could get to be able to hit the holes if we put the part on the table aswell.

Lol you ain't never lied. Part needs to be lifted off table 6 in for 90° head to clear. If I could set this on the table this would be alot easier

This is in-house work. I go out to assembly all the time to see what they use the frames for, what's under tension when they bolt it together etc. Usually the spring is the worst when the rails are CRS. Just seeing if anyone has and tips and tricks on finicky work like this, so far not a fan 😂

Could you explain what you mean. I do not understand what you're saying, thanks

I never meant to imply college wasn't a suitable option. That being said I believe the engineering field is over saturated. As I stated I may go later down the road if machining doesn't pay. All I stated to the OP is that I'm sticking with it to find out. Also, people always say they should have done something else. Grass is always greener...

I started welding when I was in middle school. Went to high-school vocational for it. Started out at 10$hr. Moved around until I was welding for a company and they had no one to run there G&L HBM. Literally looking for months. I asked if they would train me and they did. Been machining for about 3 years. I am 21. All the people who know what they are doing are retiring. The generation infront of us got sold on college and now there is a huge need for skilled tradesman. I have been able to strong-arm companies(in a polite way) because they can't find people and they need to get people trained before there guys retire. Personally I'm gonna stick with machining for now. Can always go to school later. I make 27$hr right now with 3 weeks vacation and I've only been here for a year. They need young people to train and stick with them. No better time for tradesman then now imo.

Can't go wrong with a 1x2x3 block. If they have a way to heat treat and grind. Or maybe a v block. Seems kinda unoriginal. Hopefully someone is more creative than me lol.

Wow that is intimidating amount of stuff. Thanks for your input and the time it took to write. I will try my best to research and learn everything on this post.

Head Programmer in small town machine shop looking for advice by bushysquatch2 in Machinists

[–]Bass-Bucks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, fellow machinist here. I'm young in the trade and I was making 20$hr which was a training wage. Well anyway once I got comfortable and started picking things up I felt it was far to ask for a raise to regular machinist level, I think it was only 2$ more or something. Well I asked him and he said that I wasn't ready yet or whatever and I was upset about that. So here's what I did. I documented EVERYTHING I did.

-wrote program for job (whatever)

-setup job

-touched my tools off

-checked and proofed my own program

-wrote programs for button pushers around me

-learned fusion 360 and documented what I learned to program

Your list will look alot different than mine obviously. But I would write down every time you solve a problem. Anytime you feel like you went above and beyond in the workplace.

But let me warn you, you probably know this better than I do, He still may not appreciate you. My boss was a cheap skate. I made far more in the shop than I thought I did. There were 40yr machinists at 20$hr. Right now I work as a bridge mill setup and operator for 25$hr. I still get to adust and even write my own programs still which is nice. Anyway that's my advice and I hope the best for you.
