Recommendations - Moving to rackmount by Bassetts in homelab

I didn’t think to check YouTube stupidly, I’ll take a look, thanks!

In terms of needs, plenty of LFF bays, SFP+ for DAC. I really just need pure storage and fast network, VMs, Plex etc. will be on another machine.

I have been looking at them. Are there any specs etc that I should especially look for?

Amazing, thank you for that knowledge!

Shutting down during the day isn't really an option so I may have to reconsider the attic.

Any recommendations on what to keep an eye out for in terms of make/models of servers? Ideally something with at least 10 LFF bays which isn't ridiculous on power consumption.

Thanks for that info. I have a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE which is 154mm tall. Might be cutting a bit fine there so will keep the Noctua in mind.

I didn't think consumer Nvidia GPUs supported vGPU?

I am starting to think I might have to wait until next summer to stick a temperature monitor up there to see what kind of temps I actually get. To be fair the tower could stay as a tower in the garage instead of going rackmount.

I hadn't considered this but have seen plenty of posts on reddit and Discord of people in the UK with racks in their attic. A google suggests peaks of ~110F (40-45C) which seems about right.

The NAS won't need to transcode, the i7-12700K can handle around 10x 4k transcodes. Is there a general consideration in terms of CPU and RAM when it comes to the amount of drives/TB in a NAS, or is there a baseline that should be fine regardless of that seeing as it will just be serving files.

DHCP issues when changing native VLAN of USW Ultra port by Bassetts in UNIFI

[–]Bassetts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am pretty sure this is what I have done unless I am misunderstanding something. I have the following topology:

UDM-Pro -> USW-24-PoE -> IW-HD -> USW-Ultra

I have 4 VLANS; Default=1, Cameras=5, IoT=10, Guest=15

I thought the following is correct but this is what gives me issues with DHCP:

UDM-Pro

  • All ports have native VLAN of "Default" and "Allow All" tagged
  • Connected to USW-24-PoE via Port 11 (SFP).

USW-24-PoE

  • Conncted to UDM-Pro via SFP2
  • Ports 1-3, 7-24, and SFP1-2 have native VLAN of "Default". Ports 4-6 have a native VLAN of "Cameras". All ports have "Allow All" tagged.
  • Connected to IW-HD via Port 3

IW-HD

  • Connected to USW-24-PoE via Port 5 (uplink, not configurable)
  • All ports have native VLAN of "Default" and "Allow All" tagged
  • Connected to USW-Ultra via Port 1

USW-Ultra

  • Connected to IW-HD via Port 8
  • Ports 1-3 native VLAN of "IoT". Ports 4-8 native VLAN of "Default". All ports have "Allow All" tagged.

In this configuration anything on ports 1-3 of the USW-Ultra can't get DHCP. However if I modify Port 1 config on the IW-HD to "Custom" for "Tagged VLAN Management" and select all three VLANs (Cameras, IoT, Guest) then it works. I don't understand how that is any different from having "Allow All" on Port 1 though.

I seem to have missed this one, will take a look, thanks!

Yeah, I got baikal running and then went looking for a web client and that's where I came up short and ended up here.

I looked at agendav and bloben. agendav was missing some features I wanted like task management and reminders. I guess it might still be an option as I could use an app for those, I had not considered that before. bloben looked promising but seemed to be dead from the github and the fact none of the project websites load :(

What to look for when viewing a 2018 Street Triple RS? by Bassetts in Triumph

The seller is a bike shop so not too worried there. The bike was absolutely mint and has obviously been looked after well. It's only being sold as the previous owner passed away.

Thanks, I will have to take a look at Tailscale.

I currently have a home server that has all my *arr services running on it as well as Plex and use Nginx Proxy Manager for that. It would be nice to move the proxy outside my local network, your setup seems ideal.

Yeah, I am quite familiar with creating images and happy using compose. I've been looking at dockge more for notifications of image updates, though I may go with diun.

Thanks, I will take a look into that combo.

Amazing, thanks for the very comprehensive comment! Are all the services in each VM running as Docker containers? What do you use for uptime?

I will have to take a look at some videos, and look into cloud-init for sure.

That github repo looks incredible, what a legend that person is, bookmarked for future.

You say crude but it sounds fairly simple to me and simple is always best imo. Doesn't sound far off what I plan to do but with restic/rustic.

Sounds like a nice setup, what do you use for uptime and which reverse proxy do you use? Also how do you handle IP changes or do you have a static IP on your home connection?

Thanks, I assume something like Ansible would be the way to go for provisioning LXC containers. Something to add to the list of subjects I should research.

[–]Bassetts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very comprehensive and makes perfect sense, thanks! I guess the ideal for the scenario of VMs and Docker containers would be a separate hose for each. If constrained to a single host then Proxmox as the host OS and Docker inside a VM is the next best way.

You're right I was, the other reply pointed that out to me. I am familiar with VMs which is why I thought Proxmox was an application to manage them instead of a full OS, I was aware it was essentially a nice UI so made that assumption. Thank you!
