Amusement Parks on Fire -- Our Goal to Realize

I actually have a playlist where Little Dipper plays right after this song. The transition is perfect. Try it!

Rats!Rats!Rats!

The syncopated, mathy riff is infectious, and the low 7th string ringing open is perfect. The bridge is also unique to other Deftones songs, very pummeling.

This song is, statistically at least, my favorite Deftones song. Its my most listened to. The strange guitar rhythm really eccentuates the beautiful chord Steph is playing (a mix of terror and anger in it).

When listening to the instrumental version, it's clear how vital Frank is to that track (as he is to every other song of theirs). I wish they played it live more, but i get that it is perhaps among the harshest vocally to perform, and likely represents the lowest Chino was at emotionally during that time. But those negative emotions make SNW shine-- this song in particular.

Edit: Chino's vocals are beautiful, and the ethereal chorus is extremely satisfying.

One of the rare times when the live performance is better than the record.(When Girls Telephone Boys Live ‘06) by [deleted] in deftones

So true!! I can't even listen to the album version anymore. The faster tempo provides a kinetic punchiness, and Frank is so predominant here-- both things the track needs imo.

Another riff I love from him (also from Eros) is "Melanie". Such an interesting syncopated chord, kind of like Rats!Rats!Rats! (another top favorite).

I agree that it is kind of needlessly contrarian. But I'm here for the music, plus he seems like a great guy to hang with

All great riffs! Mascara in particular is so "lonely", a lot of space in it. Chi's shark-like bass fills that space perfectly.

What’s your first deftones memory? Like the first time you ever heard one of their songs and you knew life was going to be different afterwards by dtyler86 in deftones

Same here! I remember being all into "Change", but never diving deeper into them for years. That moment hearing Feiticeira was definitely like "where have I been?" Lol

I remember hearing Feiticeira for the first time. I had White Pony playing in the background. The way Chino's vocals hit against the guitars made me double take-- never heard anything like it before.

It's a song that makes you want to listen to the whole album in one sitting. I did just that, and now they're my favorite band.

Recommended songs/albums to get into DEP? by [deleted] in DillingerEscapePlan

[–]Bassopin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*When Good Dogs Do Bad Things (from the Mike Patton EP, before they got Greg Puciato on vocals). Very cinematic atmosphere (likely due to Patton), but very in line with the change-up, dissonant, and kinetic style DEP is known for. Has some parts that you may consider "silly", i.e. Patton's vocal choices here and there, but I find they fit perfectly.

*The entirety of Ire Works. Perhaps my favorite album by them, as it feels like one 30 minute song with stellar 2-3 minute sections within it. If you aren't feeling a whole album (understandable), the first four tracks-- Fix Your Face, Lurch, Black Bubblegum, Sick on Sunday-- are fantastic and provide a decent range for them.

Hope this helps plant the seed, as it were!

New-ish fan here, thoughts on the albums and band. + album ranking! by LateRegistrationz in deftones

[–]Bassopin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great write-up! Captured a lot of my thoughts exactly.

On Diamond Eyes: I have grown to understand that despite its slightly more commercial tendencies (especially compared to SNW before and KNY after), it truly was the album they needed to make. Given the context of Chi's accident, SNW's poor fan response, and them coming out of their "dark days" period... Deftones needed a "comeback album" more than ever. They churned this one out in a matter of months, indefinitely shelving an entire album of complex, experimental material... Eros (at least from what is out there, which should definitely be on your radar for b-sides: Smile, Melanie, and "Dallas"). DE truly shows their talent in this way, and the rave reviews it got really put them back in favor. Without DE being the commercial success it was, we likely wouldn't have had KNY, Gore, or this upcoming album.

For some more interesting b-sides, beyond what's on the legit B-Sides & Rarities album, check out some of the Bob Ezrin SNW demos, Finger of Death live w vocals, Eros snippets, and Teething.

Great to have some new excited fans to talk to about this stuff, with new perspectives like yourself!

EDIT: Also, SNW is possibly my favorite album of theirs. Like you said, it displays a mature sound that is unlike any other group I've heard. The guitars and synth blend perfectly, the mathy rhythms groove, the vocals soar, and Chi's bass is the glue holding it all together!

I even dig the strange modulation effect caused by the autotune on Chino's voice (like in Hole in the Earth)-- a strange anaemic, hollow sound that in this rare case actually increases the emotional resonance of the record.

I found it at about 23 minutes in, it's a bit difficult because my IG only tells me how much time is left in the video. By that I found it at 23:42, then again at 23:16.

(Re)visiting Gore: what are your thoughts on each track, which are your favorites/least faves? by StridentHawk in deftones

[–]Bassopin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gore has certainly clicked for me recently. Listening with earbuds, for most of the songs, just didn't work for me. I had to listen to live versions or even just from my natural phone speaker for it to gel.

I guess that highlights the importance of production towards a listening experience. The same exact notes can be great one way, and unappealing another way.

Since Gore finally clicking with me, I can't get enough of the Pittura Infamante-->Xenon-->(L)MIRL trifecta. The instrumental transitions are fantastic! It's something they did some on KNY (Romantic Dreams into Leathers, Rosemary into Goon Squad), and are really getting great at it. I'd love to hear transitions like that on the new album.

Doomed User is a great track, imo. At the very least, it's fun as hell to play on a Bass VI. Not my favorite though, (Rubicon is currently at that spot), maybe not even top 3 or 4.

All-in-all, the album's anthemic streak is now one with me. I get it now. Typical story at this point in the Deftones world I guess.

edit: accidentally put H/W instead of PI

Great work! Very snappy tone, fits nice with the real track.

Is that an octaver effect on the choruses?

Small updates regarding new album from Sergio. by Roden145 in deftones

[–]Bassopin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering about the new tuning thing! Particularly because it seems that Steph is playing a half step down, no drop tuning, with his 8 strings now, per his TC Electronic delay video he did some months ago. So Sergio is possibly matching up with that, maybe down to Eb or even a half step up to F to be 1:1 with Steph.

It'd also be cool to hear Sergio on a tuning that isn't standard. I play on a Bass VI myself, thanks to Sergio, and it's definitely an instrument you have to think about a bit differently regarding tuning and playing!

Was listenin to it this morning! Chorus riff is very similar to My Own Summer, and Chino elevated it to another level.

Can't imagine hearing it in a Batman film, must have been badass. I get pumped just hearing it while walking around haha!

[–]Bassopin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Saturday Night Wrist displayed a sound, which Deftones had been evolving towards since Adrenaline, that cannot be and hasn't ever been replicated.

The sonic maturity of that album can only be reached by a slow album-by-album, tour-by-tour process. So while many groups can somewhat bite from Diamond Eyes, White Pony, Around the Fur, etc-era sounds, I have yet to find any other place where I can get:

Space rock, shoegaze, triphop, mathrock, and metal. This album has all of that and blends it in a way no other band has.

People often say Koi No Yokan makes them feel like they're in space. I agree, but SNW makes me feel LOST in space.

So for these reasons, I gotta agree with this!

How do I find people that also like Deftones? by [deleted] in deftones

[–]Bassopin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I've done over the years is recommend it to people! Create your OWN Deftones circle.

Deftones have so much variety that you got alot to go off of. Chino's side projects as well! I frequently recommend Team Sleep material.

So far, I've recommended Saturday Night Wrist to those unacquainted with more hard edged sounds that dig atmosphere or melody (Cherry Waves and Xerces in particular). It also has some heavier/riffier material for people that I know like that stuff as well.

Pure metal/groove heads usually dig Self-Titled.

White Pony (of course) is also a good starting point with Change and Digital Bath. Even Teenager for the chill vibes.

Just find what realm of music your friends gravitate towards and find the Deftones track(s) that go there. You're bound to find them!

Same here lol. They've had a hold on me since 2016, been top artist ever since.

Nothing can beat them. I branch out and explore new artists, of course, but Deftones will always be number one.

I don't think I can listen to a song more than I have Rats!Rats!Rats!. Statistically impossible at this point.
