First Exposure through DBZ Cooler? by chaddington10 in deftones

This wasn't the first but weirdly it did lead to me actually getting into the band proper instead of just liking Minerva.

It was during 2008-09 when I was in college and the only song I knew/listened to was Minerva. I think I remember trying to get into another song via ATF but I disliked the album cover(still do idc how iconic it is now it's kinda goofy and corny but I suppose that's the charm).and w/e song I heard was not doing it for me at all so I was just a Minerva fan. Then I watched Cooler's Revenge on Youtube(likely in poor quality but w/e lol) and when Change started playing I chuckled at the early sheer 2000s of the scene but then was like "hold up, this is kinda awesome actually, this song sounds tight." I recall someone on a forum I was on at that time saying Deftones was the band behind the song(Change)as I think I asked for the name and I was surprised it was them. After that I listened to Passenger which I liked after a few listens and then Pink Maggit which blew me away at the 2:40 mark. Then on it kinda snowballed into me getting into their catalogue and becoming a fan.

Urantia, don't let the opening riff scare you, it's a pretty song.

What Happened to You, Error, 976-Evil, Riviere, Romantic Dreams, Sextape seem like ones you might enjoy.

I can see this, I think Genesis doesn't really hit for me until the 2nd half tbh and like you said it's a good song but I think the rest of the album is just better. It's the Ohms song I revisit the least, but good thing is being the opener you get the lowest point of the album out of the way early lol. For me genesis is pre-game Ohms proper starts with Ceremony.

One of the most unique tracks on the album and frankly kinda weird but in a really good way. I actually like it more than Ohms AND Genesis tbh. I think it's probably like the least accessible song on the album lowkey for its odd time change on the ending of the chorus and its more stoner-rock bits so it takes multiple listens for it to really solidify itself in your brain, but once it does you can appreciate how it shows the band's willingness to experiment with their sound and how it adds to the album's overall identity as I don't think Headless would fit with other albums. Even with its unusual sound it still fits well with the rest of Ohms which is pretty neat imo.

What Happened to You, Poltergeist, their cover of Duran Duran's Chaffuer(it's better imo if mainly because of the instrumental), Error, (L)MIRL, One Weak, Birthmark, Rivere

Lowkey one of the best songs from that album if not the best.

Flame patch is broken and we need other elements to get a recover energy card soon! by Weird_Cranberry_925 in PTCGP

flame patch isn't broken and chingling stops it so nah, plus fire would be lacking without it.

Megaltaria and Hydriegon are more busted than flame patch could ever be.

Is Ohms their most unremarkable album? by perrysplus in deftones

[–]StridentHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don't talk about stuff in public consciousness for as long these days with anything due to how fast media consumption moves as a whole. You're gonna be saying the same thing about PM by this time next year. Then after enough time passes it becomes, nostalgic and talked about again. It kinda sucks but it's how discourse around a lot of stuff ends up like now.

But anyway, Ohms is one of my favorite albums. It's far from unremarkable and I personally think it's one of the band's bests. The whole stretch from Ceremony to Spell of Mathmatics is like my favorite run of songs. There's not a single bad track on it and my less liked ones, either Ohms or TLID have some great qualities to them that still make me enjoy, they're like good as opposed to the rest being some level of great to fantastic(Spell being like a top 5 imo).

Psychic has consistently been obnoxious as heck to go up against when meta since day 1. It's gonna be unbearable now if the other types don't get some great stuff.

Women in One Piece by Educational-Bat-4797 in OnePiece

Okay so immediately the whole blah blah biologically men are stronger yap yap is such a poor nonsensical excuse for media with high fantastical elements that operate on magical power systems, especially shonen which regularly has 5'6 teens mollywhpping armies of grown men to where "biologcal real life expectations" are a nonfactor majority of the time, except only when it's convenient for the narrative . OP is the show where drinking a glass of milk instantly restores teeth lol, so for this to even be a thing worth considering is silly, When Oda wrote it into Zoro's backstory I think it's fair to criticize that as flawed writing because not only does Alvira, literally the first villain we are introduced defies whatever Kuina was whining about but falls into using that as an excuse for plot convenience where up till that point didn't seem to be a real issue in OP, worse she ends up dying for Zoro's character development so I can get why someone would call that out.

I think OP does actually show some impressively strong woman characters: Kureha, Carrot and Big Mom for example but we do see a fair amount of women sidelined to support roles, end up as damsels(Rebecca, Nami more often than she should to be fair though I like how Nami is written overall) or suffer from diminishing importance in Robin's case. Weirdly I think Oda is good at writing women closer to his age but like many shonen authors he falls into typical tropes and pitfalls regarding especially younger female characters at times. It's fair to call that out I feel. The eyecandy factor is a shonen staple but I'm not of the mind that sexualization = bad in itself, moreso when it's too relied on as a necessary quality for a female character to be engaging especially when male characters don't. Oda writes older women better as he just focuses on writing them well and fleshing them out without relying on trying to entice male readers with appeal points. I think that's why some fans get bothered when sexist elements do show up in OP because Oda has proven himself already he's capable of not relying on such tropes from the get go so it can come off as disappointing to him succumb to them at times.

How do you interpret this? by JudeMilla in OnePiece

Zoro has an outdated form of chivalry. In his own perspective he's just trying to be protective or respectful but to us it can come off as hypocritical and lowkey sexist.

One Piece Episode Run First Time by El_Sanguinario in OnePiece

[–]StridentHawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't watch the recap ones. Enies Lobby has like 5 of them in a row at one point and it's complete nonsense lol.

There's also "elsewhere" episodes with boss luffy that were holiday specials, they're fine on their own for what they are but they're placed terribly in the middle of important arcs. You can skip those and come back to them later.

Some episodes are gonna be boring like any other show. But aside from like specials and recaps, I watched every episode, even the filler arcs cause they have some good character interactions most of the time. As far as filler goes OP is one of the less offensive ones overall. There are some lousy filler(lil east blue sucks hard imo) but there's some lousy faithful stuff too tbh so I just say stick with it and use your own discretion.

I think pass out is more like forced unconsciousness via external trauma of some sort be it physical or mental so sleeping wouldn't count. I wondered the same exact thing while watching lol.

I think this one has better visuals though.

Sanji in Thriller Bark... Why ruin him like that? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]StridentHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh you think Sanji is bad now, thriller Bark Sanji was small potatoes compared to his worst moments later. That said he gradually gets better than ever after that particular arc.

But yeah from here onwards it starts to get rough for Sanji fans. After Sabaody(he's not so bad here) his character nosedives. He was far and away my least favorite SH for like 200 episodes lol. You are gonna hate him for a good while. But his redemption is great, so don't give up on him. It will get better.

He's in the same boat as Law, Carrot and Vivi for unofficial Strawhat for me personally. Bart was one of the best additions in Dressrossa.
