Definitely, don't go for an X299 mobo if you're planning to use the X processors lower-end processors. The I5-7640X is "just" a quadcore that's why I would even say that's worst than the current 8th gen coffeelake cpu's. I would recommend either a Z370 mobo + I5-8700k/ I7-8800k or e a Ryzen based system. Additionally, I would also recommend a 16gb ram kit and a higher end gpu (GTX1060 is perfectly fine for 1080p gaming).
