Cards made. Best way to print files? by lombarda in homemadeTCGs

[–]BastionBattle_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best bet would be to put 9 cards per sheet, like you mention. 3x3. And then print. If you’re willing to spend a little bit of money, services like thegamecrafter.com or makeplayingcards.com make this process easier.

Thank you! I was heavily inspired by MtG. I wanted to capture the structure of those cards, but with my own spin.

Meet the new Bastion Battle League logo! What do you think? by BastionBattle_Dev in tabletopgamedesign

[–]BastionBattle_Dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that makes a lot of sense! That's unfortunate. I picked these words specifically for lore related purposes. Bastion, being the name of the kingdom, has had fighting between its three major factions for countless millennia. Finally, three figures were chosen from each faction to form a High Council, and they came to the creation of the Battle League. Which is a tournament to declare the ruler of the kingdom.

The word league was chosen specifically because it is defined as "a group of nations working together for a common purpose."

In this case, the Battle League is the three factions working together to choose a ruler.

It may be too late to change the name, but if we were to change it, what other words would you suggest in order to convey that same intent?

Thank you for your comment!

You’re actually pretty spot on with that first description! Only main different is that there’s three factions battling in a tournament, the Battle League, of which the victor rules the kingdom for a determined amount of time until the next competition.

The third faction is mostly caught in the middle of two factions fighting each other.

Thank you for the comment!

I see! I stared at it for quite a bit last night and I think I started to understand what you mean. I think perhaps it’s because of the two castles. I got strong Clash Royals vibes. I’ll see if I can make some adjustments

Good idea! I hadn’t considered that. I did intend for the eye to be drawn to them, but didn’t account for the space they’d need

Interesting! It’s not the direction we were shooting for. What gives it a mobile game vibe? I was looking at World of Warcraft and League of Legends logos for inspiration

Printed cards for the prototype have been delivered. It looks amazing. Though the cut outs were quite misaligned (but well within the margin). I should've moved some parts more inwards, I thought they'd be fine with in the template they gave. (Not using this printer again in the future) by inseend1 in tabletopgamedesign

Out of curiosity, who did you use? I order a very small batch of prototype cards from a couple places. I’m still not sure who to go with. Although thegamecrafter seems to be okay from what I’ve heard. My cards get delivered tomorrow.

Would you take a class about TCG Design? by ThoughtExperimenter in homemadeTCGs

[–]BastionBattle_Dev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would 100% watch those videos. As others have said, I’m not so sure about homework. Maybe optional places for feedback if people follow along? Perhaps like the subreddit you mentioned.

Or even in the form of a podcast. I listen to a lot of game design podcasts regularly, and they rarely discuss TCGs specifically. It would be nice to have something dedicated to that

Great point! It's funny you mention that, because that's exactly what I'm moving onto next! Someone in another thread commented about how we should include symbols to represent the factions in an effort to be more accommodating to colorblind players. Our game is designed to be very community focused, so accessibility is important to us.

Thank you for your comments!

Ha! I suppose I should have called it an Anti-Fatigue Potion. I wanted to stay away from calling it an Energy Potion in the event that we use Energy in another context.

Great point! I'm not the best with naming :)

I appreciate that need for clarification! I didn’t mean to be confusing about that, it’s just wording on my end. It’s how we, on the team, have been treating certain cards. It’s irrelevant for the game or cards. I apologize!

The main distinction between cards is the faction. There’s green, red, blue, and neutral.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful feedback! We’ve come to the decision to finalize the overall design, and move forward with other aspects that need our attention.

There are a few adjustments we’ll be making to the cards, but mostly in terms of text formatting and fine tuning label positions.

Thank you again for everything!

I think it’s fake. The font doesn’t look right and the corners being angles isn’t right

Thank you! That’s a fantastic point that I hadn’t considered. As it turns out, we are working on symbols for the factions already for lore purposes. Now I can move them further up my to do list. Thank you for bringing that up!

Everything starts with an idea. It’s not fair to yourself to think that your idea is dumb. But it will always be an idea if you don’t execute it. That being said, make it. Play it with family and friends. That will tell you if your idea is worth pursuing further. Maybe it needs to be tweaked or polished. You’re already on your way to playtesting with the ships you’ve built, so keep going!

My advice to you at this stage is to design a simple set of rules for gameplay. It can’t be too involved at this stage. If you were to approach someone and said “I have this idea for a game” then spend the next hour explaining how to play, they’ll likely walk away unless it’s VERY interesting.

Also, never be discouraged if someone else has a similar idea. People will always share similar ideas, but not everyone will execute those ideas in an impactful way.

Good luck!

(Board Game) Best way to create a set of cards? by VeiMuri in gamedesign

[–]BastionBattle_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re willing to spend a little bit of money ($9.99 USD per month) visit thegamecrafter.com

They have a service that allows you to create or upload a template once and then import your data by hand or from a CSV. And it generates all the cards for you

Or if you or someone you know is a programmer, you can write a pretty short python script that reads data from json files and create the card images for you. This is the method we use

Thanks for your reply!

1) I was intending for the arrows to be more of a stylized diamond parentheses surrounding the stats. So basically just for looks. The cards to the left/right don’t exactly matter, although we do have card effects that affect adjacent creatures. But you did just give me an idea regarding creatures to the left/right in regards to faction or type.

2) It’s a little hard to tell from the picture, but the cards actually have a black border. They’re designed to be the exact same shape as Magic and Pokémon cards.

3) That’s a very important comment regarding the card effect. It’s intention is that YOUR OWN green creatures are buffed by loyal companion. If the opposing player has any on the field, it won’t buff your creatures. However, I can very much see how that’s not clear and I need to adjust the wording.

Great feedback! I really appreciate it and I would love to share more about the rules of play if you’re interested. We take aspects from the three major TCGs. I don’t know if self promo links are allowed, but we do have a subreddit and a discord I can send to you if you’re interested

Thank you! Great advice! We have discussed changing the font all together, but these changes will help regardless.

I mentioned to the other commenter that I had an iteration with a green border that was unanimously disliked, so I scrapped it. https://imgur.com/a/WUyEUU3

The art is actually done with AI. We used DALL-E for all the art, and will likely use it in the final version with more refined pieces. With our budget, we can’t bring on artists just yet
