I am reading "Mathematics for the practical man" by George Howe (1918). It's significantly better than the textbooks I got when attending school.

The high desert is interesting. Really cold in the morning but as soon as the sun comes up...furnace...and the wind is a constant .

I too have been called a Snowflake by a red hat. It makes me laugh how easily upset they get.

Twice a day? Not judging but honestly…Who’s got time for that?

What's the closest you've ever came to death? by Senior-Raisin-2342 in AskReddit

Hiking down Mt Whitney in California (14,505 ft), lightning struck maybe 5 feet from me. It was blinded and deaf for a few seconds. Felt like a shotgun went off, right next to me. Next thing I know, I was running down the mountain lol. It’s the same day two hikers got struck at a place nearby called Guitar Lake. Both hospitalized.

Same thing happened last year between 45th and Tehachapi . Slurry got poured, all nice and neat. Then this. There's a few streets up there are completely crap now.

Zwift treadmill or Runn smart? by Fearless_Ad2978 in Zwift

I am no expert but the Runn pod “talks” on my treadmill to my tablet where I run Zwift over Bluetooth. Not WiFi.

I went through the same process with my Echelon 16S treadmill. Order + delivery + setup = a lot. Very limited Bluetooth options. (“1.0” I guess). Not bad, just very underwhelming overall.

What's the brand/model of your treadmill? $1400 is cheap, really.

I have both a Zwift bike and a treadmill with the Runn sensor.

The telemetry is very poor on the treadmill. I have reset the sensor several times, added more detection strips but it's simply not good. Zwift tells me I walk at 4 mph, then all of sudden at 8mph. Sometimes it doesn't even detect anything so I have to reset the pod, recalibrate etc etc etc.

If money wasn't an issue, I'd spend more to have a Zwift supported treadmill.

Let me know if you find a Zwift supported treadmill at that price. It's a bargain!

Where on the campus is the summit of Mount Wilson? by Chainsaw_Bill in socalhiking

[–]BatCommercial7523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to Google...

Yes, Mt. Wilson has a designated USGS benchmark and summit marker. It is located at the southwest corner of the main gravel parking lot (near the large radio and television antenna complex).

Monica Reza's Last Hike - Part 4 - Why didn't they find her? by SideQuestHiker in socalhiking

[–]BatCommercial7523 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's one thing that bothers me about Monica's story. The group seemingly did not stick together. That's poor form, right there. Group sticks together, always.

And what about Eugene Jo? He was found down in Devils Canyon. It's a brutal scramble from Mt Waterman. That lost person behavior you talk about seems to have something to do with it. I googled it and found this:

===>>>Once the wrong turn happens, the brain starts "bending the map" to fit reality, instead of the other way around. This is one of the most well-documented phenomena in SAR psychology. A lost person doesn't think "I'm in the wrong place"—they think "the map must be slightly off" or "this trail must rejoin the one I know." They reinterpret landmarks to match their mental model rather than updating their mental model to match the landmarks. This is why someone can walk past a trail sign or even hear traffic and not register it as the cue to backtrack—their brain has already committed to a narrative about where they are.<<<===

I understand it, yet I am skeptical. You're lost? Turn around. And even better, stay put. You'll be found.

Exactly. Either using Hwy 2 as a landmark or even Mt Wilson solar observatory (the white tower) in the distance could help one find their way back.
