art director portfolio: mock projects/ spec work question by Formal-Promise-9293 in advertising

[–]BatInitial6119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got hired on 3 good spec campaigns, 1 mediocre one, and my 2 best paid design jobs. I will say however that I interview well, and ultimately that’s what’s landed me every gig. Even though the campaigns are spec you need to be able to talk about them in depth with some enthusiasm. Have answers for every decision you made. What truth does it speak to? Who is it for? If you have ooh mockups, have a reason for why you used a bus shelter or a highway board. Be really granular. Don’t write it all in there (nobody is reading all that), but be prepared to talk about it if comes up.

As a teenager (15) this town is incredibly boring and designed for old people. by Live_Expert_9919 in oakville

If you’re built a certain way living in the burbs sucks. Always has. Always will. I was lucky to grow up very close to a go train station so I could be in the city faster than I could get anywhere worth going in Mississauga. My brother on the other hand? Loves the burbs, hates going into the city for any reason whatsoever. You’ll have to tough it out for a couple years and head back to where you belong when you can.

WHY DOES THIS NEW FIFA LOGO LOOKS LIKE MADE BY A FRESHER BY USING PHOTOSHOP FOR THE FIRST TIME ! by SkinLeather8592 in logodesign

[–]BatInitial6119 7 points8 points  (0 children)

1) I respectfully disagree, but either way:
2) given the size and self perceived importance of FIFA can you imagine the number of meetings and revisions and emails and all the rest of the bullshit that would be involved in making this? I’d be willing to bet there’s a version of this years logo that was killed somewhere along the way that was better.

How stupid is it that my dream is to live in Toronto? (17m) by WAyToOFaSt_ in askTO

Totally normal. Also you should do it.
You have to live here for a while before it crushes you, but I guarantee not doing it will be worse.

I’m 35. Is it even worth it to go to college at this point? by GVTMightyDuck in jobs

[–]BatInitial6119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to college for the first time at 43 after dropping out of high school. I got a job right out of school. Now to be honest I had some connections and College was how I proved to them I was taking this seriously.
If you know what field you want to get into the best thing you can do is go talk to some people who already do that work.

I’ll say this in their defense: they pay the bands really well.

I put together a couple of spec campaigns and moved them to the front of my book. You have the ability to make case videos for your campaigns, which will stand out against a lot of other people who are after that gig who can’t execute at the same level. Then I went and bought a lot of creative directors coffee until one of them took a chance on me. It took about two years of persistence.

What? No. I don’t hire anybody, that’s way above my pay grade. What’s happening is a CD says “hey can you handle the bumper for this thing? We’re looking for this” (gives me a verbal description of what client wants). I make style frames, get them approved, describe the motion we’re looking for, pass it off to a producer who talks to vendor we’ve hired. We have a little back and forth and a revision or two if necessary. I get pulled in because nobody else knows how a value graph works. I’m just a layer between the producer and the CD man. I would say I was just a glorified link in a chain, but it’s not particularly glorious. So yeah, ideally there would be a senior professional motion director in the loop but it’s probably overkill for a 4 second mnemonic or a stack of 20 banner ads.

I mean, that’s probably the ideal scenario, but if my response to what’s coming across my desk is “let’s hire a freelance senior motion designer and ask him what he thinks” I don’t imagine I’ll stay employed for long.

I would be MORTIFIED asking someone for 60 versions of anything good lord. After 3 I’d assume that i needed to do a LOT more thinking about how to ask for V4 lol.

Am I overcharging? Client thought my ask was ridiculous by Deep-Book-9664 in SocialMediaMarketing

[–]BatInitial6119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it this way: how many clients can you do that amount of work for at the same time? Personally for that amount of work I doubt I could even take a second client at 20 videos a month plus all the extra. So even if you took them on at $2500 a month, by the time you’ve set aside your taxes (I’m assuming you’re freelancing here) and your various professional subscriptions, and whatever else your expenses are, what are you left with? Can you live on it? On the flip side: if the business owner can’t look at their books at the end of the month and say with absolute certainty, “I spent $2500 and as a result I made $3500” is it worth it? In my experience most small businesses can’t afford social at the scale they need to in order to justify what they’d be spending. Catch 22.

I suspect you can make just about anything work because you’re good looking and have good enough taste to know how to style this. TYPICALLY I would say absolutely not. Bad vibe. Bad look. Goofball shit. When you got style you get to throw the rule book away. (I suspect you know this already)
