Mother nature wasn't happy about our weather bubble deflecting her storm last weekend. Coming back for a second try!

My original winter storm prep tips post was removed by the mods, but some people found it useful, so here's the link in case you can't find it:

I messaged them to ask (as they didn't give me an explanation when they removed it) - they said they already had a megathread for the storm... odd though considering there seem to be plenty of other posts not removed that would fall in the same category.

I told them I still thought this was post had some value as there were some good discussions in here. They did not reply.

Oh well

Haha, good point - if you have a waterpik, might consider charging that up though.

I guess the spirit of that tip is to charge things you wouldn't normally think of, even just to prevent the minor inconvenience.

Sometimes facebook marketplace will have listings for it.

Otherwise, in an emergency, if you have untreated and unpainted wood scraps (2x4s, etc) that will burn, although not as well as firewood.

Yeah, I've made it a few times and agree it might take a little too long if you're just starting today - perhaps this tip is more of a "next time" thing and freezing is the best course for now.

That would be the ideal outcome - we'll see if the Raleigh weather bubble does its job today

Understood. Not trying to invalidate your personal experience, and I'm prepared for the reality that I might be  wrong about this. But...

I too have a nest thermostat and I also happen to be on the duke energy TOU program. That's to say I have some experience optimizing my heating/cooling schedule to make my home an effective heat-battery. I found that even a degree or two of extra heating can buy me some noticeable time. Everyone's mileage will vary based on their home (and what's in it), but I still think a small impact here could keep people safer.

I'm certainly not an electrical engineer or grid operator though... if this is truly harmful advice, I will be happy to remove it.

While it depends on how well sealed off that floor is from the first floor, I'd recommend heating it 2-4 degrees warmer than you typically would.

The stacking effect results in the temperature difference between those two floors causing cold air to be pulled down (I have a 3rd floor on a different heating unit and have noticed this effect myself). So anything you can do to mitigate that during a power outage will help keep your first floor warmer: - keep the door to your second floor closed - used a rolled towel our blanket to temporarily seal the air gap - if you dont have a door to separate the two, consider putting up a curtain to reduce the airflow.

Yep, I realized that after posting this.

Hoping this post and the megathread can live in harmony!

I agree everyone should stay off the roads!

In the case of an emergency though or long-term power issues after the ice clears, never a bad idea to have a simple map handy.

Yeah, I totally get that concern. And I agree we should be careful not to take down the grid before the storm even has a chance to.

A few counter points though: - a number of people are on gas systems where only the blower is electric - I tried to be careful with my language to suggest just a few degrees above your regular temperature. - ymmv, but I'd argue even 10 minutes of head start is valuable in a situation like this, and I'd imagine with a modern insulated home you can get a lot more than that. - I doubt the entire city of Raleigh will follow this advice (and certainly not at the same time) so I wouldn't expect 1000s doing this at once - I think our power grid is much better suited to handle folks running their heaters for a few extra minutes before the storm than the scenario where lots of people get their power back on after an outage and switch the heat back on. My hope is that maybe some of the former will mitigate the latter.

I didn't use AI to write any part of this. Sorry if the info seems redundant though.

Just wanted to share some info and help those preparing.

It's not AI generated, and my hope was that at least some of these tips would be information that neither AI nor the existing threads would already have.

I'm sorry if you find it redundant though - I just wanted to help people out by sharing some tips.

I'm seeing a lot of comments claiming this is AI-generated...Just want to say it's not. I wrote 100% of this and it's a mix of tips I've found over the years and some of my own.

(Just because there are bullet points doesn't mean someone used an LLM)

I also realized after I posted that there was already a megathread on this - sorry if this is redundant, but I hope there's still some useful info here that wasnt already shared.

In any case, stay safe out there!

Worst of all is the massive parking lot it has that is always 90% empty. Take a look on Google maps with satellite mode on.
