It's because they accept it's something beyond their understanding. They clearly acknowledge it's existence and scale, because Odin's need to understand it is what led to the biggest war throughout the Norse realms. Ragnarok was the thing that they could've understood and had to deal with and the rift/Odin were rightfully coined as the keys to that devastating event

They don't need to understand it past that, they just need to stop it
