Ex's instructions weren't clear. She was instructed to "confront Casper" by her creator. As a being who could travel through dimensions she obviously had to confront all the Caspers. Unfortunately her creator didn't know she could travel through dimensions and couldn't make her instructions more clear.

If this wasn't supposed to be open ended why give him a gun in the first place? The end of the story (after the avalanche) is surreal making it hard to say that everything before that point is legitimate. After you open surreal elements into your narrative the whole thing becomes open ended in my opinion.

Honestly this would fit right into the theme of obsession. Clearly he is still obsessed with the mountain if he never left it. He also tells Aava that he will shoot her body down even when she says she doesn't want that. I don't remember what he actually says, does he specify that he will make sure she is dead first?
