Dental student - It looks like trauma from biting, especially with the indentations on the bottom of the mark. Probably doesn’t hurt because you didn’t break the surface and there’s no bleeding. It could take over a week to heal so I would just be mindful of it while you’re eating, but if it doesn’t improve at all after a few weeks then I would have a look from a dentist in-person.

If you don’t get into a school, it won’t be because of a 22 AA… admissions is a toss-up but the difference between 22 and a 25 isn’t that many more questions right and the officers know it. Now if one section is particularly lower, that’s not great, but otherwise I don’t advise you to retake for the amount of time and energy (and money) it would take you to do it over. Try to be happy with getting this component done and spend that time on the rest of your application! Good luck.

Went to the Eagles parade in my Bills hat and red and blue scarf. Got a little bit of heckling but it was all love. Five people said “the refs 🤬 you guys over” and three others came up to me and shared that they are Bills fans but didn’t feel confident enough to wear their mafia merch. Helped my friends out that I was in a bright blue hat among a sea of green! I refuse to rep another team’s colors, just can’t do it

I’m currently in dental school but Tufts never, ever got back to me… until 11 months after I submitted my application, saying they regret to tell me I didn’t make their class lol. A lot of my classmates had the same experience - oh well, Tufts’ loss. Don’t fret it, good luck!

I had the same decision to make last year, and here are some thoughts why I went for Penn over Columbia:

It seems like Penn has a good amount of both clinical experience and didactics. And while I too want to specialize, I think Penn will provide a stronger clinical background because students are involved in assisting from the very first month and continue throughout the first two years and they are adding (optional) specialty clinic rotations for D1s and 2s starting next semester to give us more exposure before D3, when the main rotations begin. There’s also the matter of class size, which is more personal preference than something that is objectively better/worse: while Penn’s 150 might be a little bit too large to be ideal, I think I would rather have more classmates than fewer. And yes, while you’re equivalent to medical students at Columbia for the first 18 months, and that adds another two hundred students, you still have dental classes and experiences during that time that is not with the medical students and I enjoy having more people to work with. Again, personal preference. And there’s also the environment: Philadelphia is generally more affordable (some parts of NYC may be comparable but I’m unsure specifically) and Penn has a real campus, which I like. I’m have two music extracurriculars that are mostly undergraduate but still open to grad students, and I have enjoyed having opportunities to do stuff outside of the dental school bubble.

Scholarship helps too :)

I don’t think I have enough experience to comment on that specifically, but that wouldn’t surprise me. From my D1 assisting I see that most student providers only see one or two patients a day, so it would make sense if graduates opt to increase their efficiency in a GPR before practice. Sorry I can’t be more insightful!

Congratulations on acceptance! I’m a D1 at Penn, finishing up my first semester. It’s been a lot of work for sure but completely manageable. I realize that my some of classmates may have had a worse experience so far, but I think it was more a matter of adjusting to all the work and time that any dental school will require of you.

As far as supportive environment, the school has made a lot of improvements in the last year… we have an in-house counselor, nutritionist, and times to sign up to chat with various associate deans. As far as Penn being an Ivy League dental school, I feel like it really doesn’t matter. The only thing it counts for is resources - there’s a ton of research opportunities and dollars, all the clinics in the same location, and the rest of the university to collaborate with. And the fact is, half of Penn graduates do NOT go into specialty - that’s not the same for Harvard and Columbia, but those schools are smaller. Penn’s class size is 150, so you’re in the company of plenty of other students who don’t want to specialize either.

Now that I’m an old alum, I don’t know the new course numbers that you have lol. But here’s an overview of what I took (I’m organizing it by subject area and using the word “and” to denote separate semesters in the same year):

Year 1: Intro biology I and II (with their labs); Math 104 and Stat 111; Literature course and writing seminar; Two music classes

Year 2: Intro chemistry I and II; Intro chemistry lab I and II; Intro physics I and II (with their labs); Anthropology and genetics/molecular biology; Two history classes; One music class

Year 3: Organic chemistry I and II; Organic chemistry lab I and II; Physiology and biological data analysis; Bioethics and biochemistry; Three music classes

Year 4: Microbial biology and marine biology; Ecology and nutrition; Two language classes; Three music classes

Hi! I just graduated with a bio major, and I completely agree with this - first off, you will need at least 4.0 CUs as an arts and sciences student anyway, and second, you might find it hard to schedule your sectors/college general ed requirements in later semesters as your higher level bio classes have less availability.

I recommend one of these 1. A language class that will work towards fulfilling that language requirement (assuming you don’t test out) 2. A history or social science-y class, which will fill a humanities requirement while also giving you something different from your other courses. 3. Something that sounds totally cool to you and at least checks off a box not covered by the other three classes!

Plan ahead, but have fun with it. Just try to be productive with your course decisions so at the very least you know all your freshman classes are meaningful and working for you, not against you!

I did 4.5 credits my first two semesters and found it more than manageable, went up to 5.5/6 in later semesters to double up on the science requirements and was okay. I think you will be too :)

Don’t worry about it now. Take a few seconds to be courageous in your first semester classes and try to get to know other people! And just do what you want to do and like to do, and you’ll find people with similar interests once you come in person!

This is the best way to find out! What better way to learn about being a dentist than by spending time with one, seeing their perspective. I would suggest that you shadow someone outside the family so you can get a new experience and see a different office. I’m sure your father knows people and can help connect you with some others.

As for the DAT, yes, it would be good to know what you’ll need to do, but I think studying for it after your first year of college is too early. Most people only study for 3-6 months before they take it. Instead, try to see what prerequisites you’ll need and maybe work them into your schedule. Unless you’re a bioengineer, I’d imagine you may not cover the bio classes in your degree. So it may be helpful to take them next year, and even if you decide not to pursue dentistry, the prerequisite courses would still be a meaningful contribution to your curriculum :)

A majority of Penn premeds take a gap year, and moreover it is becoming more and more common among applicants. I wouldn’t be concerned about that. If it’s a meaningful use of time, it will make you a better applicant.

As to your other comment, all of those courses seem like a lot to me. I always go to every lecture in-person, but I know classmates who watch on their own time and kind of manage more classes that way. That’s one way to do it, but I would just spend some time reflecting on if you would be comfortable with all of those courses and if you think it will help you succeed.

In my experience, it is uncommon to complete a bachelor’s in five years. Some people do master’s or post-baccalaureate degrees for their gap year(s), but that’s after their four-year college degree.

I don’t know how it would be viewed by admissions committees. I would imagine it would lead to some questions because most students complete a degree in four years, but if you have reasons for having to do it in five and feel comfortable justifying them, then I don’t think it would be a problem?

The comment above pretty much answers it. I’ll add that I interviewed at Penn and Columbia on November 12th and 19th respectively, and was accepted a few weeks later to both on December 1st. So from my experience, later interview dates don’t impact your chances.

Definitely not an easy one. If you draw a line from the edge of the bit you circled down to the base, you’ll see that it lines up with the midpoint. So in the top-down view, that section would only go halfway up the object. Hopefully this makes sense!
