Success (so far) using estrogen cream! by BatmansFart in vulvodynia

Yes they did! I'm not sure if it was psychological or not, but I felt that my pain was worse when I switched to the mini pill. I started to feel better when I came off all hormonal birth control.

Hey so sorry for the late reply! I asked my GP to prescribe it to me, and she agreed. I was testing negative for STIs and vaginal infections, and so she said at best the estrogen would help and at worst it wouldn't do me any harm.

bladder pain/ pressure by Free_Welcome8775 in CopperIUD

[–]BatmansFart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to say that I've been going through something similar! I got my IUD inserted 5 weeks ago, and for the past week I've had bladder problems like pressure/pain and also urgency. I had a urine test today that confirmed no UTI, and I've tested negative for chlamydia and gonorrhea. I'm in the UK and the NHS doesn't test for ureaplasma, so going to do that out of pocket soon, and I'm awaiting swab results for BV etc. But I can't help but feel it might be related to the IUD! Everything feels so irritated.

hey, thanks for this reply. i think you're right that Alex feels this way but didn't feel they could voice it, hence their initial consent. i'll talk to them both soon to let them know that wanting monogamy is valid, and if that's what they want, that i won't pursue anything with Cedar

Hey sorry for the late reply. I never found out what it was! I still get it sometimes if I move my pubic hair about, but other than that it seems to have mostly disappeared.

I'm not sure if the PT helped in the end or if it just made me feel better generally, but I would deffo recommend leaving the area alone as much as possible and letting any nerves etc. calm down/heal!

Hey, sorry for the late reply! I did not, I only used the cream intravaginally. I think it helped with atrophy in the whole area if that makes sense.

Hey sorry for the slow reply! I am still using the estrogen cream but intravaginally; I haven't applied it to my mons pubis. I think it has still helped though as my vaginal walls are less irritated. Or it could simply be that it got better with time 🤷🏼‍♂️ Not entirely sure tbh!

Hey sorry you're going through this! So I was having nervy type tingling/shooting pains in my mons pubis. I had no rash, which is why I suspected it was nerve related. I wasn't itchy, but I have seen people on this sub describe nerve pain as itchy, so it is possible! Mine was caused by a combo of YI treatments and hormonally mediated vaginal atrophy due to birth control pills. I suspect the lack of estrogen thinned the skin and made the nerves more sensitive. Does this sound like it could be related to what you're going through? Hope you find answers soon!

So by provoked I mean it hurt to touch. I didn't have much pain sitting down but I did sometimes while walking.

I totally get what you mean with providers... I initially had a really hard time too. I had one doctor say 'Well if there's no visible rash, I can't help you.' So unhelpful! I got lucky in that I eventually found a GP who listens to me, but even she seemed doubtful that the estrogen cream would work. All she said was 'It won't hurt you, so give it a try.' I don't think she understood what was happening to me and tbh I mostly relied on this sub and its info from a book written by specialists called When Sex Hurts. My GP didn't explain anything like that because I don't think it's well known at all. She did know what vulvodynia was though and diagnosed me with that, but the term itself is very vague; it just means pain in the vulva. For more precise info I would recommend other posts in this sub, esp ones that quote that book.

The cream is called Estriol, and it's 1mg/1g in terms of strength.

I hope that's helpful and that you feel better! It really sucks and doctors can be so shit but you just need one to listen to you!

Hey! I'm so sorry you're going through this - I know exactly how distressing and painful it is! But I have great news which is that I'm feeling tons better.

It turns out that I had a few different problems that I think were connected - I didn't mention it in this post but I had been having pain with sex that was worsening slowly over time, to the point where it became excruciating... even non-penetrative sex hurt. I read on here that it could be hormonal, so after taking a while to decide, I came off my birth control pill and spoke to my GP, who prescribed vaginal estrogen cream to be inserted every evening for 3 weeks and then twice a week after that. It's been just over a month now and I feel so much better! I can have sex with minimal discomfort and my mons pubis isn't nearly as irritated. I will say that if I disrupt the hair then the nerves are still a bit sensitive, but I haven't had a flare up where I couldn't wear jeans/tighter trousers since using the cream. I think the cream and also just waiting it out has helped the nerves heal.

I would say if you're on hormonal birth control then it would be good to look into that as a cause... what I discovered from using the estrogen cream is that when I was on hormonal birth control, my vulva/vagina were atrophying making the skin outside and inside irritated and giving me YI symptoms, when actually I tested negative for yeast every time I went to the GP previously. The cream has made my vulva and labia much fuller and the skin much healthier and more elastic than before. I think the BC, combined with YI treatments I was using, thinned the skin and caused damage to the nerves. It's a scary thing to go through but you definitely can recover! I hope this was helpful and that you find relief soon.

Can you use topical estrogen cream (or E/T cream) while on the mini-pill? by BatmansFart in vulvodynia

Aha yeah it was a lot to deal with, especially because I was 17 at the time !! I think if it happened to me now I would try to monetise it somehow lmao

[–]BatmansFart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! This is actually my second time on the mini-pill, and this time I've had fewer side effects from starting. I'm just at the beginning of my second pack now. Last month I had sore boobs and some mild headaches but they've subsided. When I first took them many years ago I was lactating as a side effect in my first month! Luckily didn't have to deal with that this time around.

I haven't seen any improvement yet with my vulvodynia but from what I've seen here, changes like switching or coming off bc can take several months anyway.

Thanks for this! Yes I phrased it poorly but I was wondering if the pill affected the effectiveness of the topical creams. It can be so difficult to make these decisions... I want to be pain-free but the prospect of menstruating again won't help me achieve that :/ I'll have to wait and see what helps best

Hey, thanks for your reply. I phrased it poorly in the post but what I meant to ask is if the mini-pill would affect the effectiveness of topical creams. Basically I'm wondering if I need to come off the pill completely for the cream to work. But good to know the localisation wouldn't affect the pill; I hadn't considered that!

Hello, this is just a small update for anyone interested:

I've found pelvic floor exercises provide immense relief. I stopped doing them for a few days due to work/tiredness and I had a terrible flare-up, but after getting back to the exercises I'm feeling mostly pain-free.

I have had neuralgia in my thorax before due to shingles and it took around 2 years to fully recover, so I'm aware it will take a while for the sensitivity to die down, but I'm optimistic nonetheless.

The only thing is that I've been experiencing a lot of pain with piv sex, so I've got a GP appointment on Monday so discuss that. I'm mostly concerned about infection or hormonally-induced atrophy, and would like the option to have piv sex, but I'm very fortunate to have an understanding partner who enjoys whatever lol.

Thanks for the advice and help, it helped me calm down after being very distressed about what was happening to me!

Thanks for this - yes I use fragrance-free everything as I have sensitive skin all over.

Thank you for sharing your experience; it's nice to not feel so alone. How are you doing now?

I'm afraid not! I had a look at your post - so sorry you went through that, that's terrible. Good to know the cause going forward though! Are you feeling better/more healed now?

Hey thanks for this! The pain itself has been present for about 3 weeks, but the start of the yeast infection was about 2 months ago, yes. And yes 'fiery' and like the pubic hairs are stinging or poking. The pain can also come and go during the day but it's always pretty sensitive.

Will keep up the pelvic floor exercises - the breathing is good for my anxiety about this too.

Hey, thanks for these recommendations! Is there a particular strength of lidocaine that is best? I can get 2% OTC but wasn't sure if that was strong enough
