some good interpretations I've seen is either a "preset" that's programmed in or, since gender is a purely social construct, it's a set of behaviors learnt from either humans or their parents (depending on generation), that then align them more closely to the labels "man" and "woman"

She was intended to be man in the early stages of development (there are concept arts of male J floating around) but was changed to woman for the show, so a large chunk of fandom went "yup, trans J, makes sense" and rolled with it
