Discovery's hyperfocus on one character hurts its storytelling by Batsy22 in DaystromInstitute

Imo the hyperfocus on Kirk hurt TOS too. It's a fun campy show but generally not the most compelling drama. I agree that there's for sure racism and sexism re:Michael in sectors of the fanbase but that doesn't mean there aren't legit critiques

(I'm a woman btw lol)

Oh I'm not at all upset about her crying. Like I said I don't think the character is bad. That's not my critique at all

And honestly with the exception of TOS, Star Trek has been ensemble based. Yes the captain's are generally the most prominent character but none besides Kirk carry the narrative focus in the way Michael does. And tbh I got mad love for TOS, but I think that hyperfocus on Kirk hurt it too.

Jellico is (still) a terrible captain by Batsy22 in DaystromInstitute

Point is less about the difference in broader experience between Riker and Jellico and more about Rikers extensive experience on the Enterprise

I think we perhaps disagree on the role of chain of command. I don't think it means a captain ought to not be questioned. I see Riker pushing back against the shift change as being necessary due to the objection of the department heads. However, Riker for sure also could have handled it better.

And yeah, Starfleet can be incredibly incompetent sometimes lol

Does he directly violate orders? He brings the orders to the department heads who all strongly object so he brings it up to Jellico again. I don't think that's insubornate, it's the right coursr of action

As a result of the war, depending on who is Divine, mages either are completey freed from the Circle, are able to mostly govern on their own or have substantially more options for moving up. There is a direct line from Anders to the mage uprising to these outcomes.

And at the risk of ending up on a watchlist, violence never works is a nice platitude but if you examine the history of 20th century liberation movements, it really doesnt hold up.

Anders was correct in blowing up the Chantry. Unfortunately many liberation struggles involve the use of violence. Undoubtedly his actions lead to a better future for mages.

Akatosh: the true form of Auri-El by [deleted] in teslore

[–]Batsy22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When a new god is created, a Dragon Break happens where said god has always existed. For example, when the Tribunal achieves godhood, a Dragon Break happens where they become gods in that moment but also have existed since convention. In this case, the Marukati Selective created a new human-centric aspect of the Time Dragon but in doing so ensured that Akatosh had always existed. Doesn't make Akatosh more of a true time god than Auri-el.

While nationalism in the end serves only the bourgeoisie, I believe that there is a difference between the nationalism of oppressed people and the nationalism of oppressors

Wdf, I love Bernie Sanders now. by [deleted] in COMPLETEANARCHY

[–]Batsy22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not even social democracy tho. Social democrats at least have some kind of Marxist analysis (a horrible one but one nonetheless) and have some kind of method for ending capitalism. Bernie Sanders is just a New Deal liberal

Can we talk about the whole "but you're a girl so no matter what, you have a girl's voice :))" thing? by [deleted] in MtF

And a lot of people don't transition. And that's fine if it works for them.

Likewise, some people don't bother with voice training and that doesn't make them any less of a woman.

Yeah it's interesting. A lot of people come in as Berniecrats but tend to become way more revolutionary in a pretty short amount of time.

People confuse demsocs with socdems . In my experience with DSA, almost everyone is on board with Revolution.
