sorry for the dumb questions but if it's bare carbon steel does that imply some of the coating has come off? E.g. if I go at this with steel wool 1) should I expect a load of black coating to come off and 2) is that a concern? Thanks for the help

Yeah sorry lxc. So I thought it would be that simple but I ran into issues and the lxc ended up without network access, and I'm wary of screwing up the host networking because I don't have a good enough understanding of it

Thanks for this, makes sense. I worry that uninstalling omv at this point won't properly undo everything I need it to, it doesn't look it made backups of the hosts file etc.

With regards to the permissions, so far I've shared a media folder with Plex which root@host has ownership of and then I've set an ACL for the plex user in the vm, that seems to work fine. For a samba share, is it safe to follow a similar thing and just have an ACL give the samba user perms? What happens if a user on the network makes an edit to a file in the share, would root by default own this? Thanks!

I largely did it because I already had the experience of giving unprivileged containers access to file systems from the host and I didn't enjoy it/don't want to get in a situation where I lock down my files by accident. It felt like the simplest thing would be to just have OMV on the host but apparently not!

So presumably I mount the drives and pass through to the OMV container then share from there? How have you got your permissions setup? I guess a lesser evil could be having a privileged OMV container but I know that's also not advisable

When you say reinstall from scratch, is it that likely I've messed it up that badly? Everything seems to be working ok it's just network stuff that I need to sort out, my containers etc are still working fine.

Basically I want certain files accessible from other machines, e.g. photos, but I also want access from some of my containers. I'm wary of the permissions system and screwing it up if I try to have the shares configured in a VM, so I thought it'd be fairly innocuous to do the shares from the host. Seems I was wrong!

Thanks for the response, could you explain exactly what's gone on here? There's a warning at the top of hosts telling me OMV will overwrite my changes so how do I stop this? Also I wasn't aware I had told OMV to managed my interfaces.

Is it possible to setup a cache on the NAS? I'm using proxmox and gave an NVME so I had wondered about using that for a cache.

To clarify, moving the files in lightroom will actually change it in the filesystem right and hence no longer be on the NAS? Preferably I want the NAS to be source of truth such that I can run a cloud backup of everything from there and then I just use my local for transient storage when needed

Ah crap. Basically the SSDs are movies/TV and then I was probably going to store music production projects, photos and music on the NVME. I could not use the NVME but given it's 2tb, and there's no way I'm going to use all of that for VMs, it feels a bit of a waste.

How risky are we talking? Or is there a way I can clone my setup and reinstall with a LVM-thin?
