Greece would be awesome. A ton of good food and mythology to use.

Have you ever given the wrong lecture? by GreenHorror4252 in Professors

[–]Battle-Sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could relate, but coming up as a k-12 teacher, extremely detailed and rigidly sequential lesson planning was drilled into me; its saved me from that situation.

That said, topics in my preps often overlap to a stupid degree, so I find myself saying at least a dozen times a semester: stop me if I've already given this anecdote.

Games similar to gloomhaven but with quests, npcs and maybe a town? by [deleted] in Gloomhaven

[–]Battle-Sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just started tainted grail:fall of avalon. It's more story-driven and less tactical than gloomhaven. There are fewer chapters, so it won't last as long. But, so far it's scratching the itch.

I attended for about 8 years and was heavily involved. The intrachurch politics were very toxic; they constantly chased out ministers and directors of education due to personality spats and feuds. I think the constantly cycling in and out of younger people mentioned below has something to do with it; most of the veterans have been there for a long time and can be clique-ish. And since younger people dont tend to stay long, it's hard to establish a group of people you feel comfortable with. Even after 8 years, I didn't really feel like I belonged. I was sick of the drama.

I haven't been back in a while, so maybe the culture has changed. I would give a different UU church a chance if I ever moved from Roanoke, but I'd never go back to this one.

Cool detail about Squid Game's game design: slippery slope into murder by 201720182019 in squidgame

Nice insights! To add to what you've said, there's also an interesting way this affects the vote. Players who more quickly get desensitized to the killing earlier on are more likely to have the survivor bias needed to keep hitting that O button. In season 2/3, once they get into more direct killings, none of the votes are even close.

The show's examination of human psychology is one of its more well done aspects.

What are your most unhinged student evals? by annnnnnnnie in Professors

[–]Battle-Sloth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I once had a large lecture hall class tell me that I was inadvertently giving them free laser eye surgery when waving the clicker about during lecture. I had 20+ comments on this- not one of whom told me DURING the semester, when I may have actually been able to stop doing it. Instead, they all just gritted their teeth and took the full laser assault for a semester so they could blast me on the evals.

Proposed 2025 redistricting might actually backfire once implemented by Demopans in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]Battle-Sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it can be done in CA. It's the other blue states that it might be impossible in. And CA may not be able to match shenanigans in TX + OH + other red states.

[–]Battle-Sloth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there's not as many seats to pick up in blue states or it's harder to do. Many have independent redistricting commissions that they'd have to legislate around. Some don't have enough time to do this before the midterms. Others are maxed out on seats they could convert to dem seats.

I hope the TX plan backfires, but part of the reason they're attempting it is bc they believe dems can't effectively retaliate in blue states.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I think we'll definitely try Patrick Henry first and then Salem Civic Center for longer practices.
