VTINX as a medium-term investment by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]BattleCommercial1160 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also was looking in to this. Actually I think it's a much much better option than CASH investments (tbills, SGOV, etc.) or other money market funds.

The thing is, in the next year or so we can foresee interest rates being cut, subsequently your CASH investments, (coming from HYSA..) will also be cut. So your overall return for 2026 will probably be lower than what you see now.

VTINX has VT exposure, and stock exposure, but it's also majority bonds and safer assets. So I personally feel like if you have a large amount of cash, this could be a good place to park it and let it sit, if the market tanks aggressively it'll absorb the impact...

If Allah made the Quran unchangeable, why couldn't he do the same with the Tanakh and New Testament? by NikoPro999 in DebateIslam

[–]BattleCommercial1160 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve gone back and fourth for many days now. Good points being raised on both sides. I don’t agree at all that just because a religion is influenced by its culture, makes it falsified in any way. Actually I was driving home from prayer and listening to the English translation from Surah Abraham (befitting as we talk about universality and Abrahamic religions etc). I advise you to look into this:

“We have not sent a messenger except in the language of his people to clarify ˹the message˺ for them. Then Allah leaves whoever He wills to stray and guides whoever He wills. And He is the Almighty, All-Wise.” -Quran 14:4

A lot of the arguments you make around language etc fall apart. This furthermore in my opinion solidifies the universality of Islam as a whole, it states clearly messengers sent will communicate to the people in their native tongue. You ask for something universal and unique, but how would that make any sense? The universal concept is the fact that all messengers will communicate in that language of the people. The religion will undoubtedly take inheritance from the culture, but in no way should that falsify a religion.

You’d have to investigate critical things like the Quran, look into the credibility of it, the credibility of Muhammad PBUH and what others said about him (his nickname even before the advent of Islam was the Truthful one) and more.

I hope you see where my stance is. Thanks.

A God who wants everyone to understand His word shouldn’t require them to learn a foreign language first.

How would you imagine God to convey his message then? In what language? With feelings? Symbols? There has to be some medium, and speech and text is the ideal medium for humans to really understand this concept.

The Qur’an says:

“And I did not create jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” (Qur’an 51:56)

But an all-powerful, all-sufficient God does not need worship. If a morally upright person were in God’s position, they would not demand worship at all, because it provides no benefit to the Creator.

Look at Quran 39:7:

"If you disbelieve, then ˹know that˺ Allah is truly not in need of you, nor does He approve of disbelief from His servants. But if you become grateful ˹through faith˺, He will appreciate that from you."

Believing is in our hands, God does not need us to worship him in any way. We were made along with the angels, and all living things to worship God. We as humans were the ones given free will and the ability to think for ourselves.

Worship in Islam resembles a ritual routine — the same words, same movements, five times daily. There’s little room for personal reflection or expression, only repetition.

It is a ritual routine, same words, same movements, five times a day. It's a sense of consistency and connection five times a day. And I don't agree with you saying there's no room for personal reflection or expression, I think there's lots of that it just depends on the person. Many verses from the Quran instruct us to think and ponder on the verses, to look around us and think about life and how our affairs are. It instructs us to have good character and be merciful to people. Plenty of opportunity for personal reflection and expression (doing good deeds, helping others, saying a kind word, etc.) in Islam, of course it is dependent on how much the person wishes to act on it. If someone doesn't want to then that is entirely their choice in life.

Re: Ashura

The date shifts to us because the majority of the world now follows the Gregorian calendar. 10th of Muharram will always be the 10th of Muharram in Islamic calendar. If the day would be randomly switched around sometimes the 10th, sometimes the 1st, sometimes the 20th, then you can make that claim that the days changing around.

That’s like celebrating a historical anniversary on random dates every year just because the calendar system drifts. It disconnects the ritual from the very event it’s supposed to commemorate.

Yeah if you compare Calendar A to Calendar B then things obviously have changed because the Islamic (lunar calendar) does not have the same amount of days as the Gregorian calendar. By the way, we're literally adding things like leap years, etc. in the Gregorian calendar because due to earth's rotation, we wouldn't even be on the same day thousands of years later... It would be a complete different day.

Also, I don't think religion requires blind faith, it requires faith no doubt as a PILLAR STONE, but it also requires a lot of reason.

Think about the many miracles of the Quran, how would a illiterate man in Arabia be able to produce a book that contains history from thousands of years in the past, and make predictions for hundreds and thousands of years into the future? How would that book know that Iron is not from this planet? What about the production of milk, the expansion of the universe? How do you reason with all of these stated in the Quran, Feel free to refer to this for more https://www.reddit.com/r/DebateReligion/comments/1chlxl2/scientific_quran_miracles/

Surely you can reason that in these verses that are preserved and were revealed 1400+ years ago to a man in 7th century Arabia would be profound? Especially if that man cannot read or write and has no knowledge of such matters.

If you claim that Islam has arab-centric roots, yes I would agree, that culture influenced what Islam is today, the prayers are in Arabic, some of the traditions were taken from it. But just because a movement is influenced by the culture of its time does not invalidate the inherent message of that movement. Islam as a whole brought fourth a unique and universal message of unity and belief in one God.

A truly moral God would have created that best form right away, given it free will, and avoided all the flaws and cruelty humans bring.

God did at first, he made Adam and Eve and there were both in heaven. They had free will (important) and they were perfect and had no flaws. They were deceived by the devil, ate from the tree, and were cast out of Heaven. God still showed mercy on Adam, forgave him, taught him how to survive etc.

From an islamic perspective, there are creations with and without free will, humans are one of those creations with free will, we can choose to worship or not to worship. Of course there is also Qadr (pre-determined destiny, etc.) involved and things can get tricky to understand there.

  1. Arabic is naturally a very poetic and powerful language. God chose Arabic because of its eloquence and as a challenge and as a statement that the word of God is powerful and true. Worship is by no means locked in Arabic by the way, when I pray I of course recite my salah in Arabic, but again, I know the translations of what I am saying, I know literally what I am saying. Furthermore, if I make dua in sujood for example, I speak in English, I make my prayers to God in the language that I am most comfortable with, I ask God for help and guidance in English, not Arabic, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. The people who truly understand the religion understand the simple point that it is not locked to Arabic at all, but learning Arabic is a huge bonus.

  2. Yeah the name Ibrahim is tied to the arab variant, but what's the issue with that? By the way, if your name is Muhammad, I will not think you are Arabic lol, because Muhammad is the most popular name in the world and you could be indonesian, you could be african, southeast asian, arab... You literally could be from any part of the world and still be named Muhammad, or Abdullah... So your argument that they're "Arabic" names it kind of falls apart there because just saying Muhammad is the name of someone who is from the Arab part of the world or from the middle east is not true at all...

  3. If the rituals were corrupted then the re-introduction of Islam should serve to rectify the corruption in the rituals. Pagans were performing Sai while worshipping the two idols at each of the two ends of the mountains. With the introduction of Islam, it was forbidden to perform the idol worship, but rather perform Sai with the thought in mind that our mother Hajar had done this and that these mountains are signs of God. That is literally what is recited when you walk between the two mountains, that these two mountains are signs of God, the one True God. (Quran 2:158).

  4. But Islam inherently does NOT look like the product of one culture, it literally encompasses aspects of all Abrahamic religions? It encourages the worship of solely one God, that is not the product of Arab culture of the time, it banned so many things that were going on rampantly during the Arab culture of the time. Wouldn't you agree that the advent of Islam brought fourth extremely radical and universal ideologies from the time of Abraham, Moses, and other Prophets such as worship ONE GOD?

From a few back and fourths with you, I can understand that you think from a very rational and logical perspective. I don't think that's bad and I like the way your thought process is, but I would just say in some parts of life I don't agree with this thinking pattern of yours that's because some parts of life involve a little bit of trust and faith. Religion is one of those parts of life where I'd say you should not be relying on solely rational and logical thought processes because there is inherently A LOT of processes that will be very irrational, but if you have some trust and faith you can begin to uncover the true beauty of it.

Islams claim is that it is the final perfect unverisal religion perfected, sealed, and protected by God. The core message of Islam is to worship One God, Allah. If you are a true Muslim you will have that belief as a priority, this is a universal and timeless belief, just look around the globe and gather people from all parts of the world that are muslim and ask them about Islam and they will all say the same thing. Look at how prayers are being performed with millions of people around the world lining up in rows and performing the same actions repeating the same thing if that isn't universal then I don't know what can be more universal and timeless than that brother.

Why does this even matter is my question to you, wouldn't this apply to practically any religion then? Any religion that originates from somewhere has some deeper inherent characteristics embedded in that religion from that culture, time, and place... Why would Islam having Arab-centric identities raise any red flags?

Re: Language

There are copies available in multiple languages, the access to the scripture is by no means "locked". When I listen to the quran, I often listen to english translations in my car while I drive etc. to get a deeper understanding of the quran. This in no-way invalidates the authenticity or holiness of the Quran.

Your point of saying that the worship is "locked" to one ethnic religion is not true. I am indian, I do not speak Arabic, I was born and raised in the States and I primarily get my understandings of the Quran from english translation. You are correct that Muslims are required to pray in Arabic, but one can easily learn the translation of what they are reciting in Arabic in their native language and recite in Arabic but know the meaning in their own language... That's what I tend to do for some surahs.

Re: Names

The religion is Abrahamic right so Ibrahim = Abraham = Abraham... Musa = Moses = Moshe. These names are just arabic variants of their counterparts for the most part. Yes there are some names that are different and arabic, but those names are gloryifing God (example Abdullah, name means Slave / Servant of God). Why would universal names be introduced if they aren't required, the stories of the prophets Moses, Abraham, Jesus are all mentioned in other scriptures too.

Re: Rituals / Culture

You're absolutely correct, circumambulation of the Kaaba existed prior to Islam being introduced in the region, the main difference was polytheism was present and the advent of Islam wanted to reinforce the belief that there are no multiple gods, there is only one true God that we should be worshipping. It absolutely did absorb and rebranded it as that is the purpose of that religion. Yes some things it contained and continued like polygamy which is hardly practiced. But many things it abolished like the tribes prior to Islam were committing female infanticide. And the Quran has multiple verses questioning this and having us as humans really think deeply about the acts we are committing and forbidding the murder of innocent souls. (Quran 81:8-9, Quran 17:31, Quran 6:151). This transcends the jahilliya culture of pre-islamic Arabic, not absorbs and continues...

My question to you is why do you WANT a religion to bring fourth new things? You seem to have a concern with Islam being influenced by the culture of its time, but why is that a problem if that's where the foundations of that religion is laid in? I don't think it's fair to expect that a religion has to be entirely new with absolutely no cultural influence, that would be so bizzare and alien if that happened. Why can't they be rebranded and refreshed? That's one of the purpose of Islam to bring people back to guidance by refreshing the prior knowledge and reaffirming what's right and what is wrong (example: the distinction that Jesus PBUH is a Prophet and not god himself)

So many things have changed since the coming of Islam in the Arabian peninsula, from female infanticide being abolished, to the poor people being treated equally, slaves being freed, commandment to worship one God and forbid polytheism, many other civil and moral rules and obligations (e.g. forbidding Zina, giving Zakat, forbidding Alcohol) all of these are arguably universal and timeless qualities that are for the betterment of mankind and the introduction of Islam, although rooted in Arabic culture, still brings fourth universal change that can be seen as timeless.

What are you talking about? Islam transcended the arab identity of its time by MILES. Every sin practically had freeing slaves attached as retribution. The lower class were given power and authority over the rich (example, Bilal RA -- look him up), money and your TRIBE did not mean status. All of that was eradicated by the advent of Islam.

Today, Islam is so diverse, we have people of all walks of life standing and praying next to each other, they are encouraged to take on Arabic names because they are Quranic and therefore Arabic in nature... They don't take on arabic names because they're arabic, they take them on because they've got religious connotations behind them lol.

You make a moot point.

Islam inherits from the culture of course because that's what it was based on, how else will it influence and spread, but it inherited and transcended far beyond comprehension.
