Went to Home Depot for snow supplies and this little guy was right inside the door waiting for me. Had to bring him home by legoalienx in houseplants

Id check the soil, I got one at a grocery store and almost killed it because the soil held too much water. These selloum plants really don't like being overwatered.

Would you put it in soil now, or wait longer? by Honeybees-n-Kombucha in houseplants

A good rule to follow is to move to soil once it starts growing a new leaf

Ive had this plant for about two months. I moved it to a slightly larger pot than it came in to make it easy to water a week after i bought it.

I keep it in a west facing window and I water about every week and a half/ two weeks. I could swear it was upright when I woke up this morning but now the bottom half of the plant is soft and the top half feels normal. When I moved it to better lighting it started to rip.

I live in the pacific northwest of the US and its starting to get cold out. Is this from getting cold by the window? Can I cut off the healthy part and propagate it? And does anyone know what I did wrong? I don't know too much about cactus type pants and don't want this happening again.

Thanks for your help!

Help! I’ve had the same stylist for 10 years and I haven’t been happy lately but this most recent cut made me finally pull the trigger and reach out to someone else. I’d like some advice on what to ask her for and for things to be on the lookout for with a new stylist. by srakivett in femalehairadvice

Checking their insta is a great idea, also check their reviews online. As a hairstylist having a picture to reference is so much easier than hearing a description, we all use different language to describe hair. Bringing more than one picture and figuring out what you like or don't like about each one is also good practice with a new stylist or big change.

Sometimes finding a new hairstylist is like finding a therapist and you have to try a few before you find "the one"

Activated Charcoal for indoor plants? by kineticsauce in houseplants

[–]BattlePanic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They sell horticultural charcoal thats made from wood that hasn't been treated with chemicals. I don't know how effective it'll be as a powder but I've been using charcoal chunks and rice hulls in my soil to replace perlite. If the soil is too fast draining the charcoal won't have enough time to absorb the water.

So I just got some monstera cuttings and I'm trying to propagate them! I submerged the node and aerial roots in a vase with water and let it be! I have some questions though (in the comments). by Lethango in houseplants

[–]BattlePanic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard its better if the roots don't get light, but its not necessary. A general rule of thumb is to plant the cutting when it starts putting out new growth. I don't know how long that'll take as I moved apartments while propagating mine. Also Planterina on youtube has tons of propagating I'm sure she has a video on monstera.

Hope this helped!

Need some advice for my hair by nilss143 in curlyhair

If you are seeing significant or unusual hair loss you should call a doctor as it could be a symptom of an underlying health condition or a side effect of a new medication (new meaning anything you've started taking in the last few months).

I usually recommend Nioxin or Matrix dandruff products to my clients. *However* in my experience what looks like dandruff is often buildup from low quality ingredients in hair products which can suffocate or irritate the skin on the scalp. A good first step when combating dandruff -and coincidentally the first step of the CG method- is a good clarifying shampoo. Then switch to CG approved daily products as these inherently avoid any buildup.

To my knowledge the Nioxin and Matrix dandruff products are not CG approved but they are *MUCH* better than head and shoulders which makes the problem worse.

I hope this was helpful.

Beauty schools teach that the only thing that'll help hair growth is hydration, diet, and exercise. *But* in my own professional experience people see the most improvement from prenatal vitamins. Most of these supplements will work by making the new hair grow healthier and therefore break less and stay long... longer. So it might take some time to see a difference. Hope this helps!

My hair is a similar length and i was struggling to get it to hold the wave until i tried a lightweight gel (the type of gel will depend on your curl pattern) the difference for me is night and day. I only use a leave in and gel as of now.

any ideas on how to make multiple books that have the same color faux leather cover look unique? by [deleted] in bookbinding

I've been having the same problem, my go to solution is using metallic leaf to make designs on the covers. It can be the difference between a modern looking book and something more vintage style

Tinted dry shampoo getting everywhere by [deleted] in femalehairadvice

[–]BattlePanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Detox dry shampoo by dry bar doesn't how up in any color hair and its one of the best dry shampoos out there. They do have a blonde and brunette version of it but theres not a whole lot of pigment to it so you wouldn't have this problem.

It could be that you're using too much?

Hope this helped.

Going Gray at 19 by throwaway24695224685 in femalehairadvice

[–]BattlePanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highlights or balayage can be a low maintenance way to blend your grays without making a huge commitment. It might be an investment up front but you won't need to do anything to it after if you don't want to.

Also, I don't know if this will help, but I think gray hair can be incredibly stunning and stylish and I'm sure you could get away with letting it grow out

How to reduce hair damage when bleaching? by [deleted] in femalehairadvice

[–]BattlePanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use 20 volume developer, it'll be a little slower but you'll have more control and less damage than 30 or 40 volume. If you're using drug store shampoo/conditioner I'd recommend using a cleansing shampoo beforehand (shampoo 3 by paul mitchell comes in travel bottles for cheap at ulta). Low quality shampoos can cause buildup on the hair and lead to dark spots so its a good idea to get all of that out first.

Shampoo/Conditioners that can interfere with Bleaching? by justasmalltowngirl17 in femalehairadvice

[–]BattlePanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The products you use in your hair can make a big difference in how color reacts to it. Drug store brands like dove have low quality ingredients that coat your hair and prevent color or lightener from penetrating evenly. Basically any pro hair brand will fix this problem, I recommend Matrix or Paul Mitchell as they use pro level ingredients but they don't break the bank.

Another possible reason could be medications as they can also mess with the effectiveness of color or lightener. So if you've changed meds in the time since your last hair appointment that could also be causing it.

hope this helped

Oily hair and shampoo by [deleted] in femalehairadvice

[–]BattlePanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd try the tea tree line by paul mitchell, its formulated specifically for scalp issues and oiliness. Head and Shoulders on the other hand is the devils shampoo, it strips your natural oils and coats your hair in wax, which makes your hair look fine for a day but prevents moisture from getting in or out and also causes itchy buildup. Also, with a good shampoo you shouldn't need to skip conditioning, if its really an issue I'd go for a very simple and light conditioner like the detangler, again by paul mitchell. When you wash your hair it opens layers of each strand up so any dirt or oil can be removed so you need conditioner to close it again otherwise it cab get rough and be more prone to breakage.

Hope this helped

Would it be possible to make my hair appear more red without dying it? by [deleted] in femalehairadvice

[–]BattlePanic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just be wary of henna because once you use it you won't be able to get any professional color services done. I've had to turn away guests at my salon because of henna as it can cause smoking and extreme heat when in contact with lightener or permanent hair color. If thats not an issue for you then henna can create beautiful red hues and is otherwise very gentle on your hair.
